Comments: My father has passed away and I have found his discharge papers that he had served the Navy from May 1948 until April 1952. I found one letter that he has sent to his mother about the USS Small. I know nothing else about his 3 years he served. He never spoke about his years in the service. If you have any information or if you knew my father, please email me.

Thanks so much!

Comments: Is is very interesting to read the comments below from people who were associated with the Small during or following the mine incident.

I served in DD-838 just prior to that time. I first boarded the ship in Inchon harbor on 3 October 1950, fresh from the States as a very junior USNR Ensign. I then served with the ship during the remainder of its Korean tour, came back to California with her for yard work, and left the Small in September 1951 just before she returned to Korea. I had volunteered for one year of duty under a program the Navy was offering at that time.

Cdr. Franklin P. Snow was skipper of the Small during my tour of duty. Lcdr. Bellis was the Exec. I remember Communications Officer Lt. Rappelyea, Engineering Officer Lt. Mudgett, Supply Officer Lt. Ristan, Lt. Davey, Lt. Price, Ensigns Gillette and Groff, and others whose faces I can see before me but whose names cannot be recalled right now. I’d be very happy to hear from any of those good people.

Anyone interested might like to know that I served as an Electrician’s Mate in USS Alabama (BB-60) and USS Dayton (CL-105) in the Pacific during WW II. After my one year of Korean service in the Ernest G. Small (DD-838) I eventually went to UCLA, earned a doctorate in Business, and spent most of my career on the Business School faculty at Oregon State University. I retired in 1986.

Mined

My Dad served aboard the USS Earnest G Small during the Korean War. He
was aboard ship when it struck a mine. I believe seven men were killed
in this explosion and the ship had to sail backwards to a harbor in
Japan where a makeshift bow was tacked on.

They then sailed to Long Beach where a new bow was added and then recom-
missioned as a DDR.

What kind of Info is available on this Ship or the men who served on it?
Is there or have there ever been any reunions of these guys? Any Info
would be helpful.

Thanks,
