LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO KNEW MY DAD |
| ERNIE AIRGOOD III wrote on October 11, 2011 CITY AND STATE: SPRINGFIELD VA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I'm trying to research my Dad's background while fighting in WWII. Looking for anyone who may remember him. Dad was a soundman 2/c on the USS Doyle and was part of the D-Day Invasion. As with many veterans he was silent on the events he experienced and I'm trying to compile a family history to pass on to my children. Keywords: D-Day, U.S.S. Doyle |

PULMONARY FIBROSIS |
| TERESA PRICE wrote on November 2, 2010 CITY AND STATE: MEXIA TX UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: My father was stationed onboard the USS Doyle (DMS 825) from June-December 1951 and his name is "Doc" Belcher. He has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis which has no known cause or cure. I'm thinking it may have something to do with exposure to asbestosis? Do any of you know of other shipmates who have also contracted this illness? Thank you! Keywords: Shipmates of USS Doyle (DMS 825) |

LOOKING FOR INFORMATION |
| PAMELA GEBHARDT ANDERSON wrote on March 22, 2009 CITY AND STATE: HOUSTON TX UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My Dad, Hugh Gebhardt, served in the Navy between 1/51 and 8/54. Part, or most, of that time on the USS Doyle (DMS34). I know he was there during the filming of the Caine Mutiny. Also, his headstone says "SO2", so I'm thinking he was a sonar operator. He talked very little of his service time, only a few stories here and there. I am looking for any information about his service time. Is there someone out there who knew him? | DENNIS HOOK wrote on March 22, 2006 CITY AND STATE: REDWOOD CITY CA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My dad, William H. Hook (aka Bill Hook) served on the USS Doyle and the USS Gull during the Korean conflict. Our family recently discovered a Navy photo of my dad with a patch below his stripes that says "MEDIC". Bill Hook died in 1984. He never mentioned being a medic or Naval Corpsman; however, my mom told us he had certain memories and nightmares in the years after the Korean War that he avoided talking about in detail. My dad was a father of five boys. He was always very strict when it came to us as youngsters being around guns, and I feel that my dad must have been part of things apart from his duty at sea and may have been a Naval Medic/Corpsman while the USS Doyle or the USS Gull were docked in Korea. I would like to know if there are others that may fill in this unknown gap in my dad's service during the Korean War. My dad would often talk about a dual role of some kind that involved the US Army, and it may have been possible that my dad served with Army units as a Naval Corpsman. Even background information about Naval medics from other ships/units would be greatly appreciated. Keywords: USS Doyle,USS Gull, medic, corpsman,US Army |
