Comments: I served on the Dixie from 1968 to early 1971 as a Radarman ( great duty on Tender ). If anyone out there reading this and may have also served in the Ops. dept. during these years, drop me a line. If Terry Borchers, who at the time was a Cameraman should happen to read this, this includes you.

INFORMATION ON DIXIE ACCIDENT

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
EARL WHITTINGTON wrote on 2002-11-11 19:20:18.0

Comments: I RECALL AN ACCIDENT CONCERNING A DIVER THAT DROWNED IN A RESCUE ON THE WAY TO SUBIC BAY. A LIGHT FREIGHTER WENT AGROUND AND CAPSIZED. DIXIE WAS ORDERED TO ASSIST, ALSO AN MSTS SHIP WAS DISPATCHED. DIXIE BEAT THE MSTS SHIP. WE WERE TAILING A TYPHOON, THE WATER WAS REALLY ROUGH. THE REASON I REMEMBER IT SO WELL WAS BECAUSE I WAS SLEEPING ON THE PEACOAT LOCKER WITH AN AIR SCOOP IN THE PORT HOLE, ABOUT DAYBREAK THE SHIP ROLLED INTO A HUGE SWELL AND THE AIR SCOOP DUG INTO THE WATER, I WAS DRENCHED, BEDDING WAS SOAKED, OF COURSE I HAD TO TAKE A SHOWER TO REMOVE THE SALT. WE LOST A DIVER IN THE ATTEMPT, AND BY BEING A STOREKEEPER I HAD TO INVENTORY HIS PERSONAL GEAR AND SHIP IT TO HIS WIDOW. HE WAS MARRIED JUST BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE CRUISE. IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTLY HE WAS FROM TEXAS. I JUST READ A HISTORY OF THE DIXIE AND THE OVERHAUL IN LATE 1954(MARE ISLAND) WAS COMPLETELY OVERLOOKED. ALSO WE LOST ANOTHER CREW MEMBER AFTER HAVING HIS TONSILS REMOVED IN THE SHIP'S HOSPITAL. HE STARTED BLEEDING BADLY AND WAS SENT TO CLARK AFB BUT DIED A FEW WEEKS LATER. I HAVE A COLOR PICTURE , 11X14 OF DIXIE TAKEN SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING MARE ISLAND IN 1954. ANYONE INTERESTED EMAIL ME AND I WILL SEND YOU A COPY BY EMAIL

Donald Phillips wrote on 2002-07-20 17:15:59.0

Comments: Robert and I shot the final cruse of the U.S.S. Dixie during 81-82. It was done on His portable video camera, but I have it - all ten hours of it. It was never cut down, or, producted in any form.

It does have the crossing the line thing which is somewhat funny now to watch. But I'm glad I don't have to go through it, ever again!
