ABOARD FROM OCT. 52 TO END OF OCT. 55 |
| MICHAEL (MIKE) VARELA wrote on June 23, 2010 City and State: RENO NV Unit: OUTSIDE REPAIR 4TH DIVISION Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I came across this web site and thought perhaps I could find shipmates I served with. My name is Michael Varela (Mike) and I Served Aboard The Dixie from Sept. 1952 to Oct 1955. I'm looking for shipmates that might remember me that were aboard during this period. I was an MM3 and worked in outside repair adjacent to the machine shop. It's hard to remember names since it's been so long ago. At this point in my life I'm 77 and enjoy skiing the whole season and motorcycling as well (love riding bikes). I often remember about my navy life, which I enjoyed very much and some of guys I best knew along the way. It was one of the best times of my life especially being young and foot loose and adventurous. Be in touch if you come across this message. Keywords: Joined the Navy Feb. 1952. Served Aboard The USS Dixie AD14 From Sept. 1952 to Oct. 1955. Than aboard the USS Hamner DD718 from Oct. 1955 to end of Jan. 1956, a short time. Got discharged in Feb. 1956, end of my Naval career. |

WOODEN DECKS? WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO? |
| JOHHN KILLIN wrote on November 26, 2009 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I reported to the USS Dixie in March 1971 in Subic Bay. First thing that struck me was the wooden decks. Not much to do for a radarman. We were in five watch sections, so the infrequent underway periods were easy. In port duty was even easier. Met a lot of really good chiefs on watch as there was a push to qualify them as CIC watch officers. I was all set to ship over, but th XO talked me out of it....said I could do better if I got out and went to college. Best advice I ever got. I did stay in the reserves though. Retired in 1996 as a SCPO. I remember a few of the guys, Shoemake, Gordy, Applegate, Ron Hathorne (LPO). We had a good Ops Boss. The division officer was pretty new. Keywords: |
