Comments: I served 2 wks ACDU for training as a Seaman Recruit aboard USS Diachenko in 1948, out of San Diego. I will never forget hanging over the side in a Bo'sn chair chipping paint, and the 3rd class PO saying, "If I hear that chip hammer stop...I'll let go!" Later, when I passed by and peeked into the the porthole of the Officer's Mess, I decided "that" should be my destiny...not chipping paint! That year Fleet Exams got me appointed to USNA. So, I thank APD-123, her crew, and that Petty Officer for a great 26 year Navy Career. I would love to hear from anyone who was aboard during that training cruise.

Keywords: I served as ship's yeoman from 1948 to June 1950. I foundly recall friends on board while going to China, Hawaii, Alaska. I wonder if anyone ever found out who stole the totem pole in Juneau and brought it aboard ship? What about those trips up the Yangtze River and the embassy personnel taken aboard with some of their possessions? I still recall Captain Purdue's sea sick dog, looked like a rug you'd find in a hunter's cabin. Other great memories, not enough room to write about all of them. Jeff

Finding info

On behalf of my Mom's friend, I am looking for information on the status
of David Joseph O'Callaghan who served in the Korean War. He was known
to have been a fireman aboard the USS Diachenko APD 123

This is all I know about him at this time. I have been searching the
Library of Congress but to no avail.

Please place this email with your other "looking for" queries for Korea.

Thank you.
