Comments: Please contact my e-mail with any information about our 1953 summer cruise from Norfolk via Panama Canal, San Diego, Yokohama with loading of Army 1st Cav. at Korea beachhead.
Most of the crew like myself were in their late teens thus the term "Kiddie Cruise".
As most of our teen crew sailed on the Deuel for four years during their 17th to 21st birthdays, we experienced the following ports of call:
1953 - Havana, Guantanamo, Roosevelt Roads, San Juan, Vieques, St. Croix, V.I., Jamaica, Haiti, Bahamas, Miami, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Norfolk and Portsmouth, VA 1954 - Mediterranean: Naples, Italy Morrocco and Portugal
Caribbean (same as 1953) Hurrican Carol followed us north to Qunset Point, R.I. Deuel sustained damage to bow while tying up to pier. 1955 - Deuel went into drydock at Portsmith, VA 1956 - Shakedown cruise to Caribbean and gunnery practise at Vieques, P.R.
1957 - Prepared Deuel for mothballs at Portsmouth, VA. Kiddie Cruise completed As a freelance writer, I would certainly like to hear from all of you. As a shipmate, it would be great to share your memories.
Keywords: As one of the barbers and custodian of the ship's store, I most likely came in contact with almost all the crew members and intransit troops.
We also formed a jam session band consisting of Darrel Bartlett - Trumpet E-Div. Cookie Smith - Clarinet Cook Div. Bill Johnson - Trombone - Marine Leo Gracik - Drums - Cook Div. Ralph Boivin - Saxophone - S Div.
