Comments: I was that crazy "chunky" IC3 who had his work center (by myself) in the middle of engineering berthing. I remember fondly the EM shop and the EM's, the Dive Locker, and so many of the crew. I also remember the last days of vietnam and searching for the parts of the plane that went down and left parts arrayed off the coast. I remember going north and escorting the refugees to Subic Bay. I wish all shipmates "fair winds and following seas!"

WestPac 75, Deliver went up the Saigon River, Last U.S. ship in Vietnam

Robin Wales wrote on 2004-01-28 15:23:50.0

Comments: I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about that ship or those excruciating days and nights laying beach gear, but I remember Ransom and Moon (and many others).

We spent 47 days at sea on the WestPac of 1975, most of it off the coast of Vietnam looking for wreckage from the C5A that crashed with a load of orphans (or so the story goes). We wanted wreckage to determine whether the plane crashed from sabotage or component failure. We got a "Meritorious Unit Citation" and the divers (who spent their days swimming with the sea snakes) got a medal.

Yes we watched them pushing huey's off aircraft carriers. It seemed like every ship in the U.S. Navy was out there in that ocean, then one morning we woke up and we were the only boat left.

That night they sent us up the Saigon river to pickup refugees. We towed one boat and escorted a couple of others (if my memory serves). The thing that I wonder about all these years later is the similarity between our boat and the Pueblo (which was a spy ship captured by the North Koreans) and the USS Liberty (which was blinded and almost sunk by the Israelis during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war).

We sure did have a lot of antennas on that boat didn't we? And they were sure security conscious in that radio shack weren't they?

We worked on the C5A Galaxy that crashed, the piers in Camron Bay and pull a LST full of men, women and childern out of Saigon when it fell. We worked on other details but my mind is not as sharp as it used to be on details and dates. let me hear from you.

The USS GRAPLE is (ARS-7), a Diver class rescue/salvage ship. I served
on her sister ships, USS GRASP (ARS-24) & USS BOLSTER (ARS-38).

The salvage navy was heavily engaged in the Korean War, close in, and
often under fire. They provided salvage support to the Army, Navy,
Air Force & Marines, Search & Rescue, UDT & special ops operations,
towing, interdiction/patroling, Humanitarian and many other tasks.

I have listed below the records of the eight Diver Class ARS's that I
have certain knowledge of their participation in the Korean War. Many
of them were also WWII and Vietnam veterans.

In the Salvage Navy, we understood ARS not to mean Auxiliary Rescue &
Salvage, but rather "Always Ready Ships". If there was a dirty job to
do, we were the one's to call upon. We paid for this respect in sweat
and blood.
