Comments: Left Okland Dec. 28th 1966 21 days to Vietnam. We lost one guy overboard 1/2 way into the trip. Another guy lost his wife in a car accident and was plucked off the ship by a helicopter out of the Hawaiian islands. There are lots of memories. What a ride. I would like to find the cook that would give me bread, rolls and melted butter right out of the oven.

Comments: I sailed on The USS Darby in 1969 with my parents, from New York to Bremerhaven Germany. I was two years old.

My Fathers post would be Augsburg Germany.

Sometime within the next couple of years I overheard my Father and another lieutenant talking about the Korean War. I was either five or six.

As the two men talked, I knew and understood everything the men were talking about, and had inside information I wanted to share. I knew names of specific campaigns, some top secret.

I understood the meaning of campaign. The Knowledge was from a leaders perspective, as if I was one of the directors of the Korean War.

When I interrupted my father's conversation to discuss a specific campaign, which had great results with limited casualits,(bragging rights of the Generals, as I remember); my father reminded me I was too young to remember the war, explaining and showing me mathematically that I was not born when the Korean War began or ended.

Somehow, I understood the explaination of the math, even though I was in nursary school or kindergarden at the time.

When I recalculated the math in my head, I realized I WAS too young for the information I had about the WAR. I COUILD NOT HAVE BEEN ALIVE in the Korean War. I started to Question how I knew all I knew, Including the math calculations.

At that moment, most of the memories of the Korean War were taken from me. To this day I have a keen interest in war and war campaigns. Unusual for the mother of three with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.

Did any other children who were passengers on the USS Darby have knowledge of the Koren War given to them they should not have had?

Comments: I went to Germany aboard the Darby in 1964 - April I think it was. Perfect weather and smooth sailing. I volunteered to work in the hospital and that was easy duty plus we got early chow.

Typical army screw up - I had 3 sets of orders - one to Bordeaux France, another to Nurembourg and the last to Baumholder. I went to all three in that order and arrive in Baumholder about a week later. I was assigned to the 83rd Artillary and it was the worst duty I encountered during my 3 year hitch. I really hated it there and was glad when I got discharged and sent home. And that was a year later in March 1965 and I came home on the Darby. I got the same easy duty but the trip home was wild. We punched through 3 major storms, seas running 30-40 feet, putting the bow under and the props came out of the water. During the height of the second storm, two friends and I went outside on the hospital deck (off limits, wind blowing like crazy, we ran to the rail and were looking forward watching the bow go under - water flying backward hit us in the face and it really stung. Then, to our disbelief, some dude snuck out of a forward hatch, ran to the bow, grabbed on to something and rode the bow under. When it came back up, he was still there, soaked to the bone and ran back to the hatch. We heard that he spent the rest of the trip in the brig. And, we guessed that he was a California surfer who just wanted to get tubed.

I stayed with another Army buddy out in Bayshore Long Island, waiting for my 1964 Volkswagon that I shipped back. And I drove that little sweetheart all the way back to SoCal. And that's my Darby story.

Comments: My nickname while in in Company C 16th Signal Battallion at Butzbach, Germany Schloss Kaserne was BIG RED. I returned back to the states on the U.S.S. Darby in April of 1965. Butzbach was located about seven miles north of where Elvis had been stationed with the 3rd Armored Division several years earlier. My trip back on the Darby was a little rough as we had bad seas most of the way back to the states. I was lucky as I didn't get sea sick but there was plenty of others that did. The prettest thing I have ever seen in my life was that green LADY standing on Ellis island in New York Harbour. May God Bless America. I would like to hear from anyone that was stationed with the 16th Signal Bn, CO. 'C' during the time rame of July 1963 to April 1965.

Comments: I remember the day we left there was a oil tanker still smoldering from a devastating fire. 17 years old meant cruise ship ride too me back then. As the band played we pulled away from the dock and as people waved farewell I thought when are getting there. A brief announcement regarding the ship still burning and then the drill we all put life vest on. After that we settled down I found a special hiding place were they stored the ships flags and it was great to hide in simply because no one every bothered me. I recall one evening watching a movie there sure was alot of GI's sea sick from that evening show.

It was the final journey which they transported GI's to Germany by ship. A new transportation was to replace the USS Darby which was great way back then.

I still think back too the time I sailed the Atlantic and landed in Bermahaven Germany. I remember sailing past the French coast line where so many Americans died that June 6 accept it was now 1966 and we sent a wreath over board marking our passing that area.

Passing the White Cliffs of Dover is still a vivid picture in my mind all these years later. When we disembarked in Bremenhaven they gave everyone a certificate from the ship with our names and sailing dates. I would love to get a picture of this ship big enough to frame and if anyone has a copy of those certificates or know where I can get one it would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: Hi, My Daddy- Robert Kidd (now age 74) a farm boy from Southwestern Va left the US on the USS DARBY when he was in the Army (Korean War). Coincidentally, I see that the Darby was built here in Alameda Ca! He returned on 'the Rose'.They first went to England .He remembers the 'Cliffs of Dover and going through some little nearby towns and then to Bremerhaven,Germany. He drove trucks all over France,Germany and throughout Russia. He never went to Korea. Maybe Buedingen or even possibly Baumholder was the Base?? His pronunciation is vaguely similar... One of my sisters and I are hoping to surprise Daddy for his 75th BD next year and take him to Europe as he always says he'd like to go back to Germany and France before he dies. He tells grand stories about how wonderful it was and how wonderful his Army buddies were. I'm not sure if Daddy will actually do it so I figure if I have a really great plan he can't chicken out!I traveled in Europe quite a bit and frequently so I can plan fairly readily if I can get any ideas on where the places were that his unit would have gone through etc. Daddy can't remember a lot of the names.I will be pressing for more details after I have a game plan and we tell him about the trip.I bet more memories come back! At some point they unloaded white Belgium block - block that Daddy laid as a mason many years later! It sounds as if they unloaded quite from the ships. He remembers near their base -seeing sugar-beets as a prime crop being used as feed and planted at all the numerous surrounding farms. "Never saw a horse pulling a wagon only oxen" He does remember seeing 'Elvis' while he was in Europe. "Couldn't play the guitar worth a lick." Daddy always talks about a huge beautiful 'church' he was in at Christmas-time.He has no recollection of where but was in France or Germany. HAHA I know how THAT narrows it down! Apparently he traveled a bit through the Bordeaux region of France. Any info you may have or ideas on bases etc would be greatly appreciated. After Daddy got out of the service he met our mother- they got married and he adopted her 4 kids. I'm the eldest of that 4.Eight more children were to follow! My Daddy is wonderful. We want to assure that this trip will be a remarkable experience and bring back even more wonderful memories. There aren't many men like my Daddy... Than you all for any info you may have, Patty

Comments: I sailed on the USNS Darby troop transport in Feb. 1965 from New York to Bremerhaven. We stopped a few days in South Hampton, England. I was on the garbage crew and got to take the garbage ashore three times a day to the dumpster on the Dock, As I was a PVT they weren't going to give me anymore liberty than that. It was a 11 day trip over the Atlantic Ocean and we went through a storm and we experianced the high waves and I can tell you what happened when we novice "seamen" opened the ports in the mess hall to air out the room when some one was seasick all over the floor. The ship rolled at the wrong time and water came through the opened ports and then went splashing down the stairs to the lower deck. The merchant marine seaman coming up the stairs was not amused.

It was a fun trip for a 19 year old kid

Comments: Was a military dependent (Army)...sailed on the USNS Wm O Darby (military passenger transport) T-AP-127 in January 1961 from Bremerhaven to NYPA. I was mid-8th grade at the time in a family of 10...was the only one who didn't get sea sick. Would like to hear from any military dependents (especially Eric and Fran) who were on that 9 day voyage. I believe the Wm O Darby, at least from what I could find, was last ported in Norfolk VA and was being used for housing for people working on other ships docked there; may still be in use.

To clarify for those who don't know...there is another Darby...the USS Marshall E Darby, DE-218 (Destroyer Escort)...for which this site was originally created...that is the ship that several prior messages have indicated may have been diliberately sunk after service...that I cannot confirm.

I salute all those who served on both Darby's. God Bless America and its military!!!

Comments: I was a Seaman Apprentice in May of 1967, and in the Navy Reserve. I was sent to Key West to catch the USS Darby, DE-218 for two weeks of shipboard training. By the time of my arrival at Key West, I was in a group of 6-8 other reservists, but we found that the Darby was not there. Two days later we were sent to Tampa-St.Petersburg in the belief that she was there. We arrived on a Wednesday and the Darby was not in port there, either. The Reserve Center there had a sub chaser tied up at the pier behind the building and the Chief put us aboard for the night until his YN's could figure out what to do with us. The next day the Darby had been located at Mobile and we got modified orders and travel and sent off again. We arrived in Mobile after dark and found the USS Darby in drydock will all of the hull below the waterline removed and most of the crew on leave. We spend the next week and a half training in the engine room, galley, and in the deck force. She was a fine little ship, a little old and tired by 1967 and I understand that she was de-commissioned shortly afterward. Ironically, I am still active in the Naval Reserve with 35 years of service and I'm now a Captain. That week and a half is the only time I have ever spent aboard ship and it was in drydock!!!

I remember the dining room and the waves hitting the ship. My seat wasnt secured and I went flying across the dining room and ended up under the table with a waiter.

I loved being on a ship and still do. I would like some Pics of the Darby also. Further information on the USS Darby would be great as well at the USS Butner that I rode in 1955 going to Germany and the USS Patch the I rode on in Juoming bact to the states.

Comments: I was directly involved in a collision between the USS Darby (Destroyer) and my ship, a swedish flag cargo vessel of 22,000 tons: Soya Atlantic, on regular schedule between US East Coast and Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela All this happened I believe in late '59 or '60 off Norfolk, Va. We were in ballast from Baltimore, Md enroute to Venezuela, just about at 2000 hrs, I was helmsman, at that time I was 19 yrs old, training for officer school. on our bridge: officer in charge, one seaman and myself. We were doing 14knots and picking up speed, just having disembarked a pilot.visibility was clear. Fromport side with red nav light a ship with high speed approaching (Darby) she kept on coming, we had right of way and hit her in the engineroom, cutting the main steam pipe, wo men killed on Darby. Inspite our warning signals, the officer in charge ignored us kpt his course. We made a last effort with hard to port to avoid collision but it was too late. Upon impact Darby went 30-40 over and took a lot water. Lot ofaction took place. We let a lifeboat down to safe seamen off Darby, but all was handled by Darby crew. Ship was enroute fromCuba to Norfolk, just about making port with relatives waiting. Court of enquiry turned out that officer in charge on Darby was found guilty of impact and loss of lives. We all felt bad about this incident and when passing on our return trip that spot we stopped engines and had a minute of silence. Later on Baltimore street I got drunk, had a fight and was in jail for the night.

Two years later I completed my Chief Mate lincense and sailed on NBC tankers, mainly Pacific and Atlantic heavy weather routes later on cargo ships to Sout America and the US. Finally I quit sailing in 1972, did a few vacation jobs while working in a shipping company a GM. I now sell HFO equipment for ships. Now I am sailingonsailboats, and planning an Atlantic crossing this November.

Are there any crewmembers ex Darby who remember this collison pse email me.

best regards to all readers

Comments: As I read through the messages/comments on this site it appears to me that there are many references to the USS Darby that carried passengers between New York and Germany in the late 50's and early 60's. That ship was the USS William O. Darby (AP-127). The ship this website is referring to is the USS Marshall Eugine Darby -(DE-218). AP-127 is a troop ship. DE-218 is a Destroyer Escort. More info and photos are available on both ships if you search on the complete name in your Web browser. There is some great info out there --- so have fun!!

Comments: Amazing I found something about the Darby! Getting ready for a cruise on the Grand Princess and was bragging to my wife that I'd 'cruised' twice before: Darby going to Germany (1960) and the Rose returning to the US (1963). Great to see there are memories of this vessel!

Comments: I was born in the US Army hospital in Bremerhaven Germany 02SEP64. Sailed the Darby as an infant in November 1964 from Germany to New York. Mom and Dad tell me there were 50 foot waves the whole trip, not sure how long it took, maybe 11 days. Everybody was seasick and I was the laughing baby the whole trip. If anybody has a nice photo of the Darby I sure would like a copy.

Comments: I sailed to Germany in November of 1963 onboard one of two troopships. I cannot recall if I sailed to Germany on the troop ship Darby, and returned on the troopship Rose, or the otherway around. Anyway, I was 17 years old at the time. My mom and my sisters came to see me off. I can recall trying very hard to hold back my tears, and dealing with the knott in my throat. Once at sea, we recieved the terrible news of Kennedy's assasination and the ship went into high alert. My trip ended in Frankfurt Geramny where I was assigned to the 45th Med Batt at Gibbs Kassern. I returned to the US almost 3 yrs later, agian, I am not sure of which ship. Anyone out there sailed to Germany in Nov. of 1963?

Comments: My Dad sailed on the darby. I think it was the tail end of the forties or early fifties. My Borther was in the USMC and was Station at Norfolk while the Kennedy went overhaul. He ate dinner on the darby. That was back in the mid eighties. He said the bilge pumps were constantly running!! Anyone with more info on this ship, E-mail me at CURL28@HOTMAIL.COM Thanks, Patrick McCoy

Comments: I was on the Darby from New York to Bremerhafen in 57. Just 5 yrs old at the time. During a moment of boredom I tried to open an aspirin tin with my mouth. Pinched the end of my tongue. Was delighted to find that the good company in sick bay were able to remove the aspirin tin without having to amputate my tongue (my older sister was betting on the amputation and was thus uninvited from the doctor visit). My mom still has a brochure and other data from the trip. I could collect it and scan it if there is a place to post it.

Comments: In 1957 my family, (minus Dad who went early to get housing) sailed to Bremerhaven from New York on the Darby. It was an exciting trip. We returned to NY x2 because of mechanical problems and because of a passenger injury. I was a pre-teen at the time and loved the trip. We stopped at Morrocco where we watched young men dive for coins thrown overboard.

Comments: While on bridge watch, spotted several subs(whales)and a UFO. Bridge said it was a star. {biggest damn star I ever saw) and it dissappeared. While on ASW maneuvers, dropping ashcans off the fantail, captain ordered "stop-ship or slow-ship" while an ashcan rolled off the fantail, exploded and lifted the fantail out of the water. Bent a driveshaft and we limped in to Portsmouth, Va. to drydock for repairs. Bet the old man caught hell for that.
