Comments: As I read through the messages/comments on this site it appears to me that there are many references to the USS Darby that carried passengers between New York and Germany in the late 50's and early 60's. That ship was the USS William O. Darby (AP-127). The ship this website is referring to is the USS Marshall Eugine Darby -(DE-218). AP-127 is a troop ship. DE-218 is a Destroyer Escort. More info and photos are available on both ships if you search on the complete name in your Web browser. There is some great info out there --- so have fun!!

Comments: I sailed with my family on the Darby from New York to Germany in 1958. It was quite a trip because we hit a hurricane. I remember the ship rising almost vertically then crashing on it's side for almost three days. The cafeteria was useless and almost everyone was sick anyway. No one could go out on deck because the waves were hitting so high. Quite an experience for a seven year old girl!

Comments: I left Washington on Nov. 3rd, the day before my 20th birthday, heading for Vietnam. It took 21 days to get to Okinawa, then a couple more to get to Vietnam. We docked in Qui Nhon. 10 months later, as I was driving a 5 ton dumptruck, I hit an anti-tank mine, which tore the entire front off the truck, engine & all. I lost my left leg, and had numerous wounds. Was hospitalized for 7 months. War is HELL!

Comments: In either '69 or '70, our NJROTC unit from Carroll High School in Corpus Christi visited the ship at the facility in Orange, Texas, to remove items from this ship and the USS Crow for our unit. I remember going through the ship, which had been mothballed, and seeing compartments and berths left as the last crew left them. It was my understanding that the ship was soon sunk as a target in the gulf.

Mom and Dad tell me there were 50 foot waves the whole trip, not sure how long it took, maybe 11 days. Everybody was seasick and I was the laughing baby the whole trip. If anybody has a nice photo of the Darby I sure would like a copy.

Comments: I sailed to Germany in November of 1963 onboard one of two troopships. I cannot recall if I sailed to Germany on the troop ship Darby, and returned on the troopship Rose, or the otherway around. Anyway, I was 17 years old at the time. My mom and my sisters came to see me off. I can recall trying very hard to hold back my tears, and dealing with the knott in my throat. Once at sea, we recieved the terrible news of Kennedy's assasination and the ship went into high alert. My trip ended in Frankfurt Geramny where I was assigned to the 45th Med Batt at Gibbs Kassern. I returned to the US almost 3 yrs later, agian, I am not sure of which ship. Anyone out there sailed to Germany in Nov. of 1963?

Was delighted to find that the good company in sick bay were able to remove the aspirin tin without having to amputate my tongue (my older sister was betting on the amputation and was thus uninvited from the doctor visit). My mom still has a brochure and other data from the trip. I could collect it and scan it if there is a place to post it.

While on ASW maneuvers, dropping ashcans off the fantail, captain ordered "stop-ship or slow-ship" while an ashcan rolled off the fantail, exploded and lifted the fantail out of the water. Bent a driveshaft and we limped in to Portsmouth, Va. to drydock for repairs. Bet the old man caught hell for that.

Comments: this does not pertain to Korea. but, I believe that the troop ship that transported me to Bermerhaven Germany, from NY City in 1964, was the Darby. One of five used by the Army to carry troops back and forth from Germany.

I have gone back to the site and do not find the Darby. I have put the
web link below. and went to Navy, I have already looked at the
Military Sea Transport page, the info there helped, but did not give me
anything specific on the Darby.
