Comments: My father, Marvin Hyman - Yeoman 3rd class, served on the USS Curtiss 1952-53 and partcipated in Operation Cancel. Unfortunatley, he is suffering from a disease called ATAXIA, which effects your memory and motor coordination. He believes this is a result of the testing and adverse wind conditions that blew fallout onto the ship. He tells me that at the time they ordered everyone to ramain below for a few days after it occurred. The VA in Tucson does not want to pursue. I would appreciate hearing from anyone knowing of a similar situation or remembers my dad.

Comments: Just for your information -- I was researching this ship as my daughter currently has a 1950 Thanksgiving Day menu from the USS Curtiss on an eBay auction -- perhaps you may know someone from the Curtiss who'd be interesting in bidding. She's asking a low price of just $5.00, and I know the ship has a colorful history, so thought I'd mention this. At eBay.com, the item # is 2190146356, and the auction ends in only about 1 day, 14 hours. If you know any interested people, please check this rare bargain out. 'hope you don't mind me E-mailng...

Comments: My father, who died in 1995, served aboard the USS Curtiss when he was in the Navy during World War II. Recently, I found a picture of his ship. At the bottom, I think it says: USS CURTISS (V-4), 19 DEC 1945 At Whangpoo River, Shanghai China. Anybody out there still, that was on it then, or related to someone who was? My dad's name was Charles Johnson. Alot of people called him Charlie. I believe he was a cook in the galley and it was this ship he was on that was hit by a kamakazie. I remember him talking about having to go into Guam to have it repaired, I think. He also talked about being able to see his brother while in Guam. His brother, Richard Johnson, was in the Army at the same time my dad was in the Navy.
Just curious, Charlotte Johnson

My mom, his little sister would love to have any information someone might have. Anyone who might remember him, any tidbit of info about him would indeed be cherished. She has set up a notebook of info to keep and has his flag from his casket. My 14 year old daughter is also very interested and has already asked me to tell Grandma she wants to keep it as an heirloom when she grows up. Any info on his death, how it happened would also be appreciated. Many thanks to anyone who could share.

Comments: Looking for ships list of survivors of the U.S.S. Curtiss during Pearl Harbor Attack. My father Hank Rollins (deceased 1986) was in the radio's ship room. Does such a list exist and where would I locate.

Comments: I am looking for any veterans that might have served with my Great Uncle Walter (Bud) Farley. He was like a Dad to me and now me and my children would love to know more of his life aboard the Curtiss. He was aboard the Curtiss during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I have more information on him if needed. I also have his uniform and some personal artifacts that I would like to know more about. Thank you.

USS Curtiss's Antarctic Voyage |

Comments: I was aboard the USS CURTISS AV4 when it made it's cruise to Antarctica in 1956 and 1957. I didn't know its fate until reading some of the above comments. Her Captain at the time was Capt Dickey and I can't remember the names of any more of her crew. How well I remember the Equator Crossing Ceremonies! I wintered at Little America Station during the International Geophysical Year in 1957...at Byrd Station in 1959 and returned as Summer support in the early 60s. I spent 4 years in the USAF 1950-1953...and also spent five 40 day cruises with the USCG in the N Atlantic.I can say that I enjoyed all of the above but have a special place in my heart for the personnel of the USN who treated me with much respect aboard the Curtiss and the Antarctic stations. She was a good ship with a good crew...I'm sorry to learn that she's gone. I'd like to hear from anyone who was aboard her during the Antarctic cruise and anyone who has wintered in the Antarctic.

USS Curtiss AV-4
Type: Seaplane Tender
Commissioned: 1940
The ship resembled an ocean liner that had the upper decks sliced off
about two thirds of the way toward the stern, leaving the after main
deck clear to hoist aboard seaplanes for maintenance or repair. It
housed the ships crew and all squadron personnel.
It contained a "Sickbay" with a doctor and operating room. All the
facilities for the support of seaplane squadrons were aboard, including:
hangar, workshops, small boats, aviation fuel tanks, photo shop,
aviation torpedo shop and storage, aviation munitions storage, etc.,
etc.. The Curtiss was scrapped in 1957.
The Curtiss was hit during the attack on Pearl harbor but was quickly
repaired and restored to duty. She also took a Kamikaze hit just below
the bridge down several decks into sick bay and a hit in the hanger area.
After the war the ship was converted for use in the atomic tests at
Bikni Atoll. Some of the spaces were converted to laboratories and a
lead lined elevator was installed leading from a laboratory up to the
hangar. The elevator was to bring the test bombs up from lead lined
storage compartment in the lab up to the main deck level for transfer
to boats for transport to the bomb site.
After the tests, the Curtiss was the flagship Of Rear Admiral Bogan,
COM 1st Task Fleet. The labs were used as hobby shops, etc.. The ship
then only had a crew of about 175, many of them "Plank Owners" who had
been aboard since the ship was commissioned. It participated in
maneuvers in Alaska and Hawaii. It was very good duty.
When the Korean war broke out, the ship was returned back to the
original mission of serving as a base for seaplanes. It was quickly
overhauled and refitted at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in
San Francisco, then in proceeded to Iwakuni, Japan, in the inland sea.
Japan was still under allied occupation and Iwakuni was in the
Australian occupation zone. There had been a Japanese airbase there
during the war. It was now an Australian base with a small contingent
of U. S. Air Force personnel.
The Curtiss anchored off the airbase, using the ramps and buildings for
maintenance; supporting them with living facilities, shop facilities,
parts, stores, and fuel. The planes were normally moored at anchor
between the Curtiss and the base. The seaplane squadrons supported were
two U. S. Navy squadrons and two Australian RAF squadrons. They were:
USN - VP42 and VP47, Aussies - RAF 205 and RAF 209. The Americans flew
Martin PBM's. The Aussies flew Sunderland's. Other squadrons were
rotated in, but I left The Curtiss just before Christmas 1950 to
recommission the Essex class aircraft carrier, USS Bon Homme Richard
CV -31, in Bremerton, Washington.
