TAPS... |
| MICHAEL BODIN wrote on August 24, 2009 City and State: SUPERIOR WI Unit: USS CREE Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: In reference to post #47749: Taps were sounded, 3 volleys were fired into the air, and a retired Chief Boatswain Mate piped him ashore one final time on Saturday, August 22, 2009 in Bayfield, WI. He died peacefully in his home with his wife of 60 years, Shirley, and I by his side. He suffered with pancreatric cancer from mid-June until his passing on August 15, 2009 at about 1350. He truely had "been there and done that" in his 85 years of life! He had many fond memories of his time aboard the USS Cree during World War II! He will be missed by many! Fair winds and following seas...forever! I love you , Dad! Keywords: "Bud" |

OPERATION WIGWAM |
| MAX (REB) PERRINE wrote on May 26, 2009 City and State: VA Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Was discharged from Cree in 56. {I missed the "Tiger Bar" incident when a lot of the crew, including the skippe and exec in civvies, landing in the brig.} I came aboard while the Crew trained for Wigwam at Santa Catalina Island before going out for the shot. We towed sub hull out. Remember trying to retrieve the tow when it hit the side of the vessel and buckled the deck above the AC Power panel allowing some of the seawater to cause a few problems. I remember one of the blast shocks causing the Motor Field Rheostat for the main motor to arc and melt the commutator and remember Parker standing below it in the motor room and having some of the molten coper to burn his scalp. Being the leading electrician PO I was "chosen" to replace the MFR in a "Hot Panel", while most of the off duty crew watched a movie in the mess. Also remember "Sad Sams" in Honalulu, and was aboard when we layed back some of the railroad tracks at the DE piers after sea trials when the skipper forgot we couldn't give Full Astern when approaching the pier. Does any remember the "burning Ammo Barge" at Ford Island? I remember CC Morgan, Hook, Parker, Gerry Pabst. I remember "Froggy" Moreau and some of the guys getting together for pickin and grinnin on the fantail. Keywords: Operation Wigwam |
