Comments: I was on the decommissioning crew. The last voyage was actually to Long Beach. The last time we were in Long Beach prior to the DeCom was following a REFTRA gunshoot. Some of our crew got into it with the USS England crew, a Tin Can vs Dumb ship thing. We won, I guess. Some of our guys took over their quarterdeck. This was the only domestic battle during Vietnam I am aware of by Navy folks. Of course I was not in the ruckus and I am sticking to the story. But, we were kicked out of Long Beach!

She was a good old boat. We had some of the highest gunnery scores in the Navy that year and received an "E" for operations.

Comments: The Cowell took our Army Reserve unit from Tresure Island to Monterey Bay (Fort Ord) on what we were told was the last trip for the Cowell before being stripped of all classified items and handed over to the Argentina Navy.

Comments: I went on board the Cowell in drydock at San Pedro for re-commission in August 1951. We commuted from terminal island (Long beach) daily until the ship was commissioned on 9/21/51. We moved the ship to San Diego on oct 11 1951. We left San Diego on JAN 4, 1952 ON ROUTE Through the Panama canal to Norfolk Virginia arriving there on Jan 19. I transferred to the USS Gordius ARL36 on March 21, 1952. I think the Cowell Had orders for Korea at near that time.

Comments: I am looking for persons who served on the USS Cowell around Jan. 1965 to Dec. 1966. My wife's father is Cmdr. Richard G. Colquhoun who was the skipper of the Cowell around this time period. This is the second marriage for both of us and I never got the chance to meet Richard. He passed away in 1989. I am interested in researching his Naval histor for his grandchild. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Comments: I did not serve during Korea, but did serve on the USS Cowell from Jan or Feb 1956 to August 1958. We made to Far East cruises during that time and each time made the Formosa Patrol. Is there anyone else out there that served aboard the Cowell during that time?

Comments: I am not sure where you got your info from on the Cowell. I served aboard the Cowell from Jan 1956 until Feb 1957. She was a Fletcher Class Destroyer. Her pennant number (hull number) was DD-547. She was armed at that time with four single 5" 38's, twin 3" 50's, Five torpedo tubes and depth charge roll racks of the stern. When I went aboard she was in Vallejo (Mare Island) for complete overhaul. When we went on a speed run under the Golden Gate about April of 1956 she logged 39.9 kts. She was the fastest can in the Pacific Fleet when she did that. She was later sold to Argentina. Ed Arnold USNR ICFN PS The Cowell does have reunions on the East Coast as the ex-shipmate that organizes such reunions lives there. His name is Smalley, but I have lost any other info on him. If you respond maybe I can have more on him. The Cowell was named after a Lt Cowell who died as a result of wounds recieved aboard the old USS Essex in the war of 1812 off Valpariso.

I am looking for information about a reunion of the crew of the USS
Cowell. She was a Destroyer Escort that my Dad was on. My mom got a call
from someone looking for my Dad and she did not get any contact numbers.

She was a little surprised by the call. The guys that called had been
looking for my Dad for several years. They told my mom that a reunion
would occur some time this summer.

If there is any way you can direct me in finding out more information I
would really appreciate your help.

The USS Cowell went on a world cruise after shelling the Korean coast
for some time. This is what I recall my Dad telling me.

My Dad's name: Edward G. Chester

Thanks in advance for your help. You can forward any info to my e-mail
address. I have the same name, except that I am a "jr." He was the
original and one heck of a great guy.
