Comments: Made one wespac, ship blew up #4 main engine, never made a drop of freshwater the whole cruise. Never served on a ship that stayed so broke down. Had the pleasure of being in Hawaii and watching that ship being towed out to sea and sunk.

Comments: I am proud to say I served aboard CONSERVER from January 1983 until March 1986. I was an electrician's mate, fresh out of Navy Class "A" EM school. Did a couple of WESTPACS and also looked for the Korean Airliner KAL Flight 007 Black Box when the Soviets shot them down. Interested in talking to other crewmembers from before, during and after I served aboard "The Fightin' C".

The USS GRAPLE is (ARS-7), a Diver class rescue/salvage ship. I served
on her sister ships, USS GRASP (ARS-24) & USS BOLSTER (ARS-38).
The salvage navy was heavily engaged in the Korean War, close in, and
often under fire. They provided salvage support to the Army, Navy,
Air Force & Marines, Search & Rescue, UDT & special ops operations,
towing, interdiction/patroling, Humanitarian and many other tasks.
I have listed below the records of the eight Diver Class ARS's that I
have certain knowledge of their participation in the Korean War. Many
of them were also WWII and Vietnam veterans.
In the Salvage Navy, we understood ARS not to mean Auxiliary Rescue &
Salvage, but rather "Always Ready Ships". If there was a dirty job to
do, we were the one's to call upon. We paid for this respect in sweat
and blood.

USS CONSERVER (ARS-39)
ARS - 39: displacement. 1441 lenght. 213'6" beam. 39' draft. 14'8"
speed. 15 k. complement. 120 armament. 2 x 40mm. class. Diver
With the outbreak of the Korean war, she arrived at Yokosuka 15 July,
1950 and between 15 July and 1 August carried out salvage and diving
assignments in Korean waters. After a brief overhaul at Yokosuka, she
salvaged a fuel pipeline at Iwo Jima, and from 10 September until 24
December returned to Korean waters. After a final towing voyage from
Japan to Korea in January 1951, Conserver returned to local operations
at Pearl Harbor from 16 February to 28 May. After salvage duty at
Kwajalein and Majuro, she returned to Pearl Harbor to prepare for her
second tour of duty in the Korean War. She arrived at Sasebo 27
September, and operated primarily in Korean waters until 7 May 1952,
when she cleared for San Diego.
After operating on the west coast until 4 August 1952, Conserver sailed
for brief duty at Pearl Harbor, Kwajalein, Guam, Subic Bay, Bangkok,
Singapore, and Sangley Point, returning to Pearl Harbor 22 October.
On 6 April 1953, she returned to Sasebo for duty in Korean waters until
9 November, when she cleared for Pearl Harbor.
Conserver received nine battle stars for Korean war service.
