He was murdered in a nursing home on 040506 and finally went home to his duty aboard the Columbus and she seems to be collecting her past shipmates too soon. My father served during 51 to 54 and I was the only one of his sons to go Army but I made a life of danger as special forces medical officer and served for 17 yrs.If in florida any ship member who served with my father will receive a special day at my icecream parlor in springhill,Fla called 7th heaven icecream parlor so stop in and ask for Randy so I can shake a hand my father should have if still alive.

Comments: The Columbus was known by 2nd & 7th Fleet sailors as the BEST ship sailing. The atmosphere on board was top friendly. She had all the engineering, gun, communication, Fleet awards. The signal-gang won all Fleet trials and was respected by all class ships; Chief Piercy was known as the TOP signalman; many other ship signalmen ASKED US what it was like to serve with Chief Piercy... it was a great time for a -19- year-old sailor!

My mother refused to give me any names and after her death my older sister told me that my Fathers name was Bill Baker. When he left Bremerton WA it is my understanding that he went to either Long Beach CA or San Diego CA. My Mother followed him for a few months the she returned to Bremerton Wa where I was born July 22 1953. My mothers name was Anna Davis or Anna Dudack. I would love to hear from anyone that knew this man and possibly where he might live today. I am almost sure that he has no idea that I exist.

I recall seeing the USS COlumbus tied up in Norfolk in the early 70s, a symbol of an earlier time, this was just before the new Californa class cruisers were commissioned. Looking to hear from any who served and especially any who may have been Marines, was Halsey really onboard? That must've been something.

Comments: My father, SF3 Frederick J. Barth, served onboard the good ship USS COLUMBUS (CA 74) from 1950-1953. He had many fond memories about his naval service which led to his attending USS COLUMBUS reunions starting in 1992. I joined the Navy in 1976 as a Hospital Corpsman and remain on active duty today. I have attained the rank of Master Chief and love my service. It's a love I gained from my father. Pop passed on in 1998, that year I attended the ship's reunion in Norfolk, VA with my mother. I wish to thank you all for the fond memories and wonderful reunions which where so important to Pop. I thank you for the Navy you molded for me and only hope that when I retire in 2006, that I have helped mold a Navy for the next generation of Sailors. God Bless you all and God Bless America. My father was on the USS Columbus during Korea. He served with two
friends who were in with him. Himself and his two friends put in a
request to be switched to the USS Hobson.
Well his two friends were transfered and his orders were denied. I don't
have to tell you what happened to the Hobson. Well anyway, both of his
friends were on the ship when it crashed with the Wasp and they were
both killed.
He stayed and lived, and it bothers him to talk about it. I recently
did a search in you KIA database with the names he gave me and they did
not show up in your database. All I currently have is there last names,
Marabella, or somthing like that, and Algaso. I am not sure of the
spellings since he does not always spell correctly.
By the way he was on the Columbus.
Thank You in advance,
Kevin Long
