Comments: Correction to my original entry below. I think we boarded the ship in San Francisco in March of 1949 and arrived in Yokohama in April of 1949, rather than the end of 1948. Any assistance will be sincerely appreciated. Regards - Don Bailey

Comments: I am trying to find the name of the transport ship that took me to Japan in 1948. I don't remember the month, but I was wearing my OD (winter) uniform. After basic training at Ft Knox I was sent to Camp Stoneman, California, went from there to San Francisco, and sailed from San Francisco to Yokohama, Japan. During the voyage we were caught in a terrible storm that lasted one full night. I've never been sicker in my life. By noon the next day we were allowed back on deck. Can anyone tell me where I might find a list of troop ships that transported soldiers from San Francisco to Yokohama in 1948? I'd sure appreciate the help. Thank you - Don Bailey

Comments: My brother-in-law Leo Valencia served as a Baker in the Galley bake shop aboard the E.T. Collins. He has a sketched graphic of the General Colins framed in his hallway. When I first saw it years ago, I let out a yell at him. I had been aboard that same ship 7 years after he had served aboard it during WWII. Only I rode it across the Pacific out of San Francisco under the Golden Gate Bridge (the first time I had seen it)on my way to Korea via Yokahama, Japan in early 1952. Leo has bequeathed it to me when he is gone. What a strange coincidence it was! Leo has been married to my sister Liz for 60 years and is in his mid 80s living in St. Joseph, MO.

Comments: I'm writing because I was brought home from Manila in the E.T. Collins in late 1945. I say in the E.T. Collins because the ship was so crowded I was alloted space at the stern end and at the very bottom of the ship. In fact I was given an army cot to sleep on which was astraddle the propeller shaft. The housing for the shaft was a bulge in the bottom of the ship similar to the bulge in the front seat of an automobile for the drive shaft. When the stern of the ship came out of the water in high seas. the propeller would apparently gain speed causing a shudder that shook my cot. I was 20 years old at the time and I'm 83 years old now but I still have a vivid memory of that luxury voyage.
I have a photo of the E.T. Collins which I could Email to anyone interested.

After the Korean armistice General E. T. Collins continued to rotate troops in Korea and Japan, keeping strong America's presence in the critical Far East. She arrived San Francisco after her final passage 6 October 1954 and was inactivated. General E. T. Collins was returned to the Maritime Administration [sic; Administration] 30 June 1960 and was placed in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay, Calif., where she remains.

Collins (I belive) when it returned from Kobe Japan in 1954 (probably August, September or October) -- from what I have found it may have been October 7, 1954. My mother's husband served in in the War and one of his fondest memories was returning (he was one of the last groups of actively fighting Marines to return)and the coming into the San Francisco Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge with the fire boats shooting water out. I am trying to lcoate this photo -- does ANYONE have it? We were trying to do something for him for Christmas with it. HELP!

Comments: I sailed out of San Francisco Jan.54 aboard the Collins. Like a lot of you, 1st. time on ship. I remember one fellow (army) waivered on the gang-plank and lost his duffel bag overboard. The ship was crowded end to end and about three days out ran into a storm. We were at chow and standing up, you could watch the trays slide back forth. Some trays had a different food than I was eating. Got to Japan and went to K-14 Kimpo, 4th FIW...Looooong time ago.

There were also a handfull of sailors and airmen on board. The rest were all army personnel of the 27th division, I believe. We landed in Yokuska Japan 18 days later. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who was on that ship. I was able to get a photo of the ship. Is there anyone ou there with memories of those days at sea.

Comments: My father, Jack "Johnny" Ray Pike, sailed on this ship from Puget Sound to Japan before he fought in Korea. While on this ship a violent storm was sailed through with mighty high waves. After all was calm the ship was leaning greatly to one side. Dad asked what had happened to make her lean so bad and a ship crew person told him that in the belly of the ship they had alot of servicemens cars and they broke loose when they sailed into the storm it had tossed those cars (which there were quite a few Cadillics) around to where they were just "large metal balls" after the storm. Ship crew personnel told Dad that they had to wait until after the storm to resecure what was left of the cars. That was why it lean so bad-all the cars that had broken loose from their chains were now piled on one side of the ship. We were just wondering if someone out there might remember this and would like to converse more on that trip.

Comments: Seeking details regarding my paternal grandfather's Korean War assignment while in Japan. He was aboard USNS General E. T. Collins during transportation from Yokohama to San Francisco, during May-June 1951.
According to "List of Inbound Passengers (United States Citizens and Nationals)", Form I-416 Treasury Department, List # 102, page 2 of 6, line # 2, my paternal grandfather "Vincent J. Berrey" (Vincent Joseph Berrey) was listed. He was returning from Yokohama, Japan. His home address was given: 815 Gladys Avenue, Long Beach CA. This was the home address of his Aunt Julia May Berrey.
Grandfather was a WW2 veteran of the Army Pacific Theater of Operations- Southwest Area (Australia, New Guinea, Goodenough Island), April 1942-March 1945. He was in charge of pierside operations in the Transportation Division, headquarters Brisbane, Australia.
Grandfather conducted logistics training of pierside operations for Army junior officers and senior enlisted personnel at Camp Kilmer, NJ, during the Berlin Crisis, 1948-1949. This was a planned training program conducted to prepare ourselves for operating at European ports just in case the Berlin Blockade were to escalate into a full-blown war with the Soviet Army.
Based upon Grandfather's four years of pierside logistics, it is my theory that he had completed a one year assignment (July 1950 - May 1951) with a U.S. Army unit stationed at Yokohama where he was assigned as a logistics officer in the pierside operations with U.S. & Japanese cargo/transport vessels in support of UN forces during Korean War.
I have copies of all six pages of ship's Form I-416 listing: family name, age, sex, married or single, U.S. passport no. & place of birth, number and description of pieces of baggage, and departure/arrival dates.
Ship departed Port of Embarkation Yokohama on 31 May 1951, and arrived at Port of San Francisco, 11 June 1951.
Any information about Army units attached at Yokohama for port operations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Comments: I have a decent post card photo of E.T. Collins. The trip from San Francisco to Yokahama, Japan was Jan 28-Feb 12, 1949, on the way to a tour of duty that lasted 32+ months. I ended up as a radar operator in SB 17s and SA 16s, and flew the day the Korean War began. I flew many missions and came back to the US in 1951. I'm retired and spend the summers in Wisconsin, the winters in Scottsdale, AZ. I'd be happy to send a copy of the card upon request.

Comments: In November 1950, I traveled aboard the USNS General E. T. Collins to Japan. On board were perhaps thousands of Marines, Army, and Navy warriors headed for Korea. I and 5 others were the only Air Force people, and our mission was to monitor the shipment of over 60 tons of cargo, 25 jet engines and 250 external fuel drop tanks for the F-86 Sabre jets of the 4th Fighter-Interceptor Wing. The 4th's Sabres and personnel were aboard a jeep carrier and a tanker also enroute to Japan. Our final destination was Korea where we initially operated from K-14 (Kimpo Airbase).
I'm trying to reconstruct that 21 day cruise but a lot has escaped my memory. We initially docked in Yokohama and off loaded some folks. We then sailed down the eastern side of Japan to several ports and off loaded everyone except the 6 of us and the cargo. After much confusion, and after meeting an Army Master Sergeant who was in a row boat in a river, we then headed back to Yokohama and finally got off the Collins. I hope to have a member of the crew who may remember that specific cruise to contact me and give the details of exactly where we went from the first docking in Yokohoma to the final docking again in Yokohama.
Appreciate your help with my memory - Korea was 51 years ago wasn't it?
Thanks, and a great 2002 for you and our Country. Andy Andrews, ex USAF Fighter Pilot
