Comments: Hello, my wife's uncle served aboard the USS Collette during the Korean War. Last night he told me an amazing story about being shelled by the N Koreans and how he and his fellow sailors narrowly escaped. Mr. Desselman is in the first stages of Alztheimers and doesn't remember all of the details. I'm wondering if there is a place/resource, where I might research specific battles. It's my belief that he just wants to revist his tour of duty and I would like to help him in any way I can. Bless you, Richard Lawless Columbia MO

William Webb wrote on 2007-09-10 14:58:11.0
Comments: My father, William C. Webb, was a Marine pilot on the carrier USS Bennington, CV20, in action off Iwo Jima, when he crashed on takeoff on February 22, 1945. According to his WWII aviator's log, he was picked up by the USS Collet, DD730. As he told it, a Navy seaman had to jump into the water to assist in his rescue. He always said he owed his life to this man. He never knew his name and I would like to find him if possible. My dad died in January, 2007 and I know he would want me to thank his rescuer on his behalf. As I was not born at that time, I suppose I owe my life to him as well. Any information will be appreciated. Rev. Bill Webb, former active duty Marine officer

Comments: My dad, Gordon Coleman was a Fire Control Technician and in the plotting room of the USS Collette when it took fire from a Korean shore battery. He was hit by a projectile that nearly took off his leg below the knee. He still has the projectile and uses it for a doorstop today. Although he doesn't have Internet access, he was very interested in hearing the names of shipmates he served with during the "Sitting Duck" operation. I would like to forward any comments to him from anyone who was aboard the Collette during that period.

Comments: I would like to establish conatct with any sailors who served aboard the Collett with an Arthur R. Correia. Arthur Correia is my father and he passed away some years ago. I would like to hear stories and share anecdotes with any sailors that served with him. I believe he had the nickname "Snotty Arty" or "Bullhead", while on board the Collett. I also believe he held the title of boatswain mate.

RICHARD A. (RICH) Bowman wrote on 2003-08-10 14:13:07.0
Comments: We are trying to locate and contact former members of the Korean War who served aboard the following destroyers: USS DeHaven (DD-727), USS Mansfield (DD-728), USS Collett (DD-730), USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729), USS Henderson (DD-785) and USS Gurke (DD-783). The destroyers comprised Destroyer Squadron 9 (DESRON9) and became known as The Sitting Duck Squadron, for their pre-invasion assault on Wolmi-Do Island at Inchon, Korea on September 13, 1950. These six ships received the Navy Unit Commendation for their bravery and heroism on this historic day.
We like to locate veterans of DESRON9 to determine potential interest for organizing a Sitting Duck Squadron Reunion, to be held in 2004 at a yet to be determined location in the United States.
Interested veterans may write, call, or E-mail either:
