MOORE wrote on June 15, 2010 CITY AND STATE: ESTERO FL UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: OTHER Comments: THE USS CHAMPLIN-DD-601, A BENSON-CLASS DESTROYER, WAS NAMED FOR STEPHEN CHAMPLIN, AND COMMISSIONED AT QUINCY,MA, ON 12,SEPT.,1942, LCDR.C.L.MELSON IN COMMAND. ON 12,MARCH,1943 THE USS CHAMPLIN SANK THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-130 WEST OF THE AZORES. THE U-130 HAD SUNK 24 SHIPS (162,015 TONS)INCLUDING "WHILE UNDER THE COMMAND OF ERNST KAL (KNIGHTS CROSS MEDAL)" THE USS EDWARD RUTLEDGE-AP-52, THE USS TASKER H.BLISS-AP-42, AND THE USS HUGH L.SCOTT-AP-43,ALL ON 12,NOV., 1942. ON 12,MARCH,1943, U-130 WAS UNDER THE COMMAND OF SIEGFRIED KELLER, ALL 53 U-130 CREW WERE KILLED. ON 7,APRIL,1944, THE USS CHAMPLIN-DD-601 RAMMED THE STERN, AND SANK THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-856. U-856 WAS OUT 44 DAYS ON IT'S FIRST PATROL. IT HAD NOT SUNK OR DAMAGED ANY SHIPS. U-856 WAS UNDER THE COMMAND OF FRIEDRICH WITTENBERG. THE U-856 HAD 27 OF IT'S CREW KILLED, AND 28 SURVIVED. IN THIS COMBAT THE USS CHAMPLIN'S COMMANDING OFFICER, CDR.JOHN J.SHAFFER III, WAS WOUNDED BY SHRAPNAL, AND DIED THE NEXT MORNING. IN JULY,1945 THE USS CHAMPLIN DD-601 WENT TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, AND LEFT PEARL HARBOR FOR THE ATTACK ON WAKE ISLAND IN AUG.,1945, THEN ON TO OKINAWA, AND TWO TRIPS TO JAPAN, THEN BACK TO THE U.S.A. THE SHIP WAS OUT OF COMMISSION ON 31,JAN.,1947, AND SCRAPPED. THE DESTROYER EARNED SIX BATTLE STARS FOR WORLD WAR II. My father(Clinton Peoples Jr. from Akron, Ohio), served on these vessels during that time. He was also a part of the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron NAS, Quonset Point, Rhode Island. He was known as The Painter at one time, for he was always drawing. He were told he was MIA at one time but came back. His name was Michael Brockmeyer. I am trying to find any information about him, I am told by the navy his records were lost. I was young when he died and never really asked him about his time in the war and now would like to know.
