Comments: I FINALLY RECIEVED WORD FROM THE VVA THAT THEY SERVICE CONNECTED FROM AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE DIABETES-2 AFTER WAITING 4 YEARS OF DENIALS AND APPEALS.THAT CONNECTION WAS GRANTED IN FEBUARY OF 09' AN STILL HAVEN'T RECIEVED ANY COMPANSATION ALMOST 5 MONTHS. NOW THE 'DAV' IS SAYING THAT I'M NOT SERVICE CONNECTED. I TOLD THEM OVER THE PHONE THAT I HAVE THE DOUCUMENT SAYING A DIFFERENT STORY. THE WORD "GRANTED" MEANS JUST THAT ,BUT THE DAV STILL SAYING I'M NOT.JUST RECENTLY I WAS DENIED DIABETEIC RETINOPAHTY,AND TINNITUS. WHY I WAS DENIED FOR MY EYESIGHT SINCE IT IS LINKED TO DIABETES-2? ITS APPEARS TO ME THAT THE VVA,AND THE 'DAV' OVERLOOKS MY SERVICE CONNECTION TO AGENT ORANGE. THE RIGHT HAND REFUSES TO ALLOW THE LEFT TO TURN THE PAGES ON MY CLAIM. I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED ON MY JOURNEY. GERARD HUTCHEON

Comments: I was with the 1st Marine Division (REIN) FMF when we boarded in San Diego on Feb. 10, 1966. There was a total of 17,000 marines that left Camp Pendleton and sailed for Vietnam. Another ship I remembered with the USS Cavalier was the Greasy George. I forget the formal name of the AKA ship but the sailors on board the Cavalier called it the Greasy George. What was the name? Anyways, after about 4 days, we arrived at Pearl Harbor and spent only 1 night. We marines were allowed a four hour pass to Fort De Russey-then after we got back on board, drunk of course, we then rendevouz with the rest of the force (the rest of the fleet left San Francisco and other ports) just west of Hawaii the next day and sailed for Okinawa. After about four weeks, we landed at White beach, Naha, Okinawa. I remembered standing watches on the fantail and in the various compartments of the ship and also the Russian thrallers that were shadowing us. I also remembered the four or five levels of canvass hammocks in the troop hold where we were bunked. We had to secure our field transport packs, rifles, helmets, and seabags to the chains of our hammocks. I look back at those days on board the Cavalier with fond memories. I recall boarding the ship and it reminds of the WWII movie, "Battle Cry" with Van Heflin. We looked just like those marines in the movie when they boarded their APA. Anyways, after all these years, I just want to say that I loved the Cavalier and I want to thank all the sailors who made our voyage to Oki a pleasant one. The food was great and I had a great time on deck doing our rifle exercises and watches.

Comments: Alvin Lowi Sunday, 4/13/08, 5:31 PM The Cavalier was my first active duty assignment after graduation from Georgia Tech and Regular NROTC in June 1951. Ensign, USN. Reported to the Beachmaster on the beach at Chitose near Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan, in September 1951 and climbed aboard the Cavalier at sea from an LCVP using a cargo net. Captain Uehling was the skipper. I was assigned a boat wave and "B" Division. Merchant-marine trained Lt. George Westcott, USNR, was "M" division officer. George taught me how to run the boilers and keep the steam up. At the time, the Cavalier was engaged in landing exercises with the Oklahoma National Guard, 45th Infantry Division, which was landed at Inchon, Korea the following December. The temperature was 30 below. The boats took on sea ice, which I had never seen before. From Inchon we went to Hong Kong for some R&R. While there, the British port commander challenged our ships company to a yacht race around Victoria. Our Exec. (CDR. ??) was from Boston and rag sailor from way back. The Brits bought us a lot of Scotch after that. From: Gadsden, Al Email: alowi@earthlink.net

Comments: The article citing a photo in a bar in Tsingtao, I could not have been far -unless I had the duty that day. We had some shipmates who became famous after they left the Navy. A Johnson who was a cook went on to be the Light Heavy weight champion of the word. Paul Anderson was our mailman and he went on to be the world's strongest man. Me ? I stayed in the Navy until Feb 1 1973. Although it was a long time ago,I have hopes for some others of this era will contact me. Pisott th 1st class BT retired in portsmouth Va. I came up on him while I was in the Intrepid.

Also made Wonson Landing over the Mine fields in the Harbor.. Before
going home to San Diego.
