Comments: My dad, Robert (Bob) Perlman was on the Cape Esperance in 1944-45. I do have a neat picture of when they crossed the International Date Line and they had a clothes-tearing contest or something.

I'd be interested in any news about him on the ship from other crewmembers.

He died back in 1988.

Comments: Served on Cape 12/54 to 10/57 as YN. Usual run from Alameda to Yokosuka. One trip to Pakistan. One trip to Med. via Spanish Morrocco, Italy, France, Portugal. Hit very rough storm in Med. Planes broke loose etc. Total mileage during that span of time was about 126,000. Sailed about 26 days a month. Had one fire on board, overflowed 550 gal. of oil on hangar deck, bulkheads cracked during typhoon going to Okinawa, and had one murder on board.

Comments: My Uncle, William (Bill) Pellerin (my father's brother), was lost at sea after a plane crash off the coast of San Diego on Nov. 10, 1953. I believe that he was serving on the Cape Esperance at the time.

I would love to learn of any information about my Uncle, and/or about the accident.

Comments: Was crew member 1957-58 ( Korean era ) when it was the USS Cape Esperence TCVU 88 part of MSTS(militery sea transport service). I ran small stores and the "Gedunk". There was a crew of about 200 and some civilians. Our function was to transport airplanes to the orient and bring back damaged ones, as well as prisoners, and dependents.

Comments: I served aboard the Cape Esperance from Oct. 1950 to May 1952 when I completed my "Truman Year" and was discharged. I ran Clothing and Small Stores during my tour and also made ice cream at night. As Tom Bilbo, SK3, also on this site says, we made many Pacific crossings carrying planes (F-86s and F-84s) to Yokosuka and back, often stopping in Hawaii. Also trips to Bangkok (two)carrying planes for the Thai air force (we were wined and dined by the King on our first trip), Eniewitok as A bomb test support, Subic Bay, Manila, Cavite, etc. My home was in Oakland so Tom Bilbo, Mike Limperis and I took a liberty up to the Russian River one summer and had a ball. On our return from the Far East we experienced a severe north Pacific storm which caused lots of damage and we came close to capsizing. All the paint in the paint locker broke loose and the crew had to go below and carry the paint in buckets up the steel ladders to the hanger deck and toss it over the side. Very intoxicating fumes!...If any of my old buddies are still around, like Tom, get in touch.

Comments: My grandfather, Raymond Noel Burbank - known as Dutchy to his pals, served in WW2 and Korea in I believe a support and logistics role. He was born 15 January 1920 in Minneapolis.

Details I know are :

WW2 - unsure where and when with whom, but know he discharged after the war.

14 April 1950 - re-enlisted (recSta, San Francisco) and in transit status 14 Apr 190 - 22 June 1950.

23 June 1950 to 17 April 1953 US Naval Air Station, Angana, Guam

18 April 1953 to 21st June 1953 Transit Status

22 June 1953 to 7 July 1955 served aboard USS Cape Esperance (T-CVE88)

8 July 1955 to 17th August 1955 - hospitalised

18 Aug 1955 to 13 Feb 1956 aboard USS General J C Breckinridge (T-AP176)

Re-enlisted 14 Feb 1956 USS Breckinridge

retired May 1958 - I have a newspaper clipping - also retired with H.O Spender and E.G. Brock - has photos of all 3 men. Let me know if you know these other men and if you would like a copy of the (tattered) clipping.

On July 26th 1958 - he arrived to settle permenantly in Australia, with his Australian born wife and their three US born children - one of which was my mother.

he passed away in his sleep from a heart attack related stroke in about 1974, in Cessnock, NSW Australia.

Despite being his oldest grandchild - I was only 6 years old and have only few memories of him. We used to sit on the jetty and fish - I wonder what he was thinking then as he used to look out accross the water...

Would love to hear from anyone who knows anything of the people my grandfather served with.

KOREA SEA OF JAPAN ARUBA APPLE CRATE OF TISSUE PAPER

Comments: It seems that the duty of one former Navy officer aboard Cape Esperance during Korea was a routine task of swapping out an apple crate of tissue paper at regular intervals. This seems to hint of similarity compared to the Atomic Veterans story. I would like to know more about this time period in this ship's history. Who out there might have first hand information.

Comments: Came home on the Cape Esperance, with 320 other Marines.I thought it wasthe greatest cooking in the world on board this ship. I remember fried chicken the mess men gave me abour 12 pieces of chicken, and after eating the sop food in Korea, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.I also remember big storm in north pacific that lasted all nite, and during the day with the ocean flat,we stopped for 3 or 4 hours with sailors going over the side and welding some seams that had ope up. All in all a great 15 days.

Comments: I served on the Cape Esperance from Jan 1951 to Jan 1952. We crossed the Pacific 7 times that year and back. 1st cruise was to Pearl Harbor on the way to Eniwetok, which we were to know later was in support of the A-Bomb tests of that year. I was a Fireman Apprentice in the Forward Engine Room. We carried men, material and aircraft to Yokosuka, Kobe, Sasebo, Japan; also several ports in the Philippines, Subic Bay, Manila Bay, Cavite City. Eniwetok, Bangkok Thailand. Pearl Harbor Hawaii.

I later served on the USS Everett, PF 8 in Hong Kong, Japan and Korea from 1952 - 1953. My last ship was the USS Colahan, DD 658 in Korea, Japan from 1953 to 1954. The Colahan escorted CV Saipan into the harbor (now Da Nang) Gulf of Touraine, Vietnam in a resupply effort for the French at Dienbienphu, Vietnam.
