Comments: I just went to an antique store and bought a postcard with a picture of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge in the distance. Once i got home and looked over what i had bought, I noticed that the postcard had a letter from a man named Clark "C.j" Ellinwood. And he said he was waiting to be shipped to Pearl Harbor to go to his ship the U.S.S Cacapon. Now I'm trying to return the postcard i purchased back to his family. Because it would mean a lot to them. So if anyone knows Clark or his family, I would appreciate the help.

Cacapon enroute from Sasebo to Task Force 77

Frank Carter wrote on 2005-07-13 00:00:00.0

Comments: I am seeking any crew of the Cacapon AO52 who was aboard from approx October 11 through October 27, 1950 when the following incident happened: I was a "guest" aboard to be taken to my Fighter Squadron 114 aboard the USS Philippine Sea during replinishing operations in the Korean combat zone. The Cacapon left Sasebo, Japan loaded with bombs, rockets, various other ammo, aviation fuel, and ships oil. The main deck was awash. When we arrived in the combat zone the engines were stopped and the ship was dead in the water. General quarters was sounded and all hands were told to man the rails and look for mines, as magnetic floating mines had been spoted. Sharp shooters exploded some and we waited most of the day for mine sweepers to arrive and clear the way. If anyone remembers this incident, has more exact dates or details please contact me. Sincerely, Frank L. Carter 8721 Shadow Trace Drive Keller, TX 76248 817-281-8454

Comments: After completing recruit training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL, I was assigned as a crew member aboard USS Cacapon AO-52. I went aboard the ship in Sasebo Harbor, Sasebo, Japan. During my first cruise to the combat area off Korea, we were replenishing USS Princeton CV-37 to port and a destroyer to starboard. Princeton lost steering control and collided with Cacapon, damaging the ship. We were ordered to Sasebo for temporary repairs. After those repairs were completed, we returned to the combat area to fuel smaller vessels engaged in shore bombardment. We then were ordered to the states for major overhaul at Mare Island Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.

After serving in the Second Division (deck) for a few months, I went to Class A Radarman's School at Treasure Island, CA. Upon graduation, I returned to Cacapon and served the remainder of my enlistment. My rank aboard the ship was SA, SN,RDSN, RD3, and RD2. I served aboard Cacapon from April 1952 to October 1955, except for the time I was in radar school.

During my four cruises to WestPac, we fueled Task Force 77 and the Formosa Patrol. We had liberty in Sasebo, Yokosuka, and Osaka, Japan; Keelung, and Kaohsiung, Formosa; Subic Bay, PI; and Hong Kong,China. In 1955, we participated in the evacuation of the Tachen Islands and the historic "Passage to Freedom."

My decorations include: Navy Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon (retroactive), China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal(4 stars), United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea: Korean War Service Medal (retroactive).
