Comments: I am looking for some info on something I got from my deceased grandmother. I have a brass 12 inch by 6 cylinder with a screw on top. It says ss burlington on it and looks maybe to be a flare or distress kit. It has a tag on the side of it and says coston distess kit. Just looking for some info.
Thanks bighoglk@yahoo.com

Comments: I was on the Bisbee from August 1950 until April 1951. I remember that we blew up a mine when we were Harbor Entrance Control Vessell at Wonson, was probably November or early December 1950. We left Wonson dragging anchor when they lost the port and then we went to Hungnam until just before Christmas 1950. After Inchon landing we went to Sasebo for repairs and then to Manilla where I left for the states in May 1951

Comments: I thought we got the sonar dome knocked off when we were practicing with the hedgehogs. They went off sooner than we the officers thought, our chart was measuring in meters, they figured it was fathoms. Did notcount the rounds we fired back at them in Wonson. How about the trip up to "Songin" when we dropped of the ROK marines behind North Korean lines, early 52.

Comments: I'm a friend of Jim Kramer, a crew member on PF-51 during the Korean War. He told me about his time on the ship. The part I remember best is his saying that it appeared as if the Russians kept cattle on the ship from the shape it was in while being refurbished.

Comments: I am looking for information on the date the USS Bisbee encountered a large Chinese mine, in the shipping lanes between Japan and the Phillipines. It was approximately the week that America invaded Korea, in 1951. I am needing specific or general dates. Thank you.

Comments: I remember sitting in Wonsan Harbor when a quartermaster read the blinkers comeing from a DD. Suposedly the message said, "If you remember how you got there, back out the same way. You are in an unswept mine field." True or not??? I don' know but I sure started praying.

Comments: We were towing a sampan that looked suspicious. It broke up from the speed. Heck we could do 17 knots if we got the wind at our back. After trying to sink it with 40MM, Hand grenades etc (couldn't hit the stupid thing)We backed up and rammed the Damn thing. That tore off the sonar dome so we spent some time in Sasebo Yea gojueachi. You talk about Mchales navy. we wrote the book.

Comments: I served on the USS Bisbee PF-46 from 1951/August until she was decommissioned, then went to the USS Burlington PF-51, I served on her till decommissioning and remember training part of a Thai crew and always thought that was where she went but now find out she went to Colombia, same as the Bisbee. I have many fond memories of PF duty, the comment about the main battery brings back memories in Wonsan harbor where upon recieving counter battery fire we replied with 272 rounds in 3 minutes with the shells landing anywhere from 500 or so feet from shore to 1500 feet up the mountain, not much for accuracy but we did burn the paint off all three 3" 50's. Could go on and on but better not

Comments: To any sailors of the USS Burlington;
I am searching for any former sailors of the Burlington who served aboard the ship in 1950,51. I am doing this for my father, Richard Creek, who at the time was from Eagle Grove, Iowa. Please contact me at my e-mail address if you can help. It would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Richard Creek, Jr.

Background
Bob Parker, USN 1948-1953
All of those Frigates (PF-XX) were used by the Russians during WWII.Then
parked in Tokyo Bay to rust away. When the Korean War started they
ordered them refurbished and recommissioned for duty.
I went on board the Burlington PF-51 in the summer of 50. I believed we
recommissioned it in the late summer or fall of 1950. I believe we were
part of ComDesRon8, a part of the 7th Fleet. But that was a long time
ago. We then went to Wonson Harbor and reported to SOPA.
We spent our time going up and down the coast shelling trains and RR
tracks. We also went to the mouth of the Yalu River with a destroyer one
night to shell the Chinese. The lights of Vladavostok USSR were only
about twelve miles away and very visible.
We didn't have mush fire power, 3" deck mounted guns were our heaviest,
and not gyro controlled. We couldn't hit a bull in the butt with a
shovel if the water was rough.
The one thing I do remember was we had about 189 men aboard and I was
the only regular Navy. All the others were Reserves. I was the senior
yeoman aboard (YN2).
