My twin brother came aboard from the USS Oriskany deployed in the Gulf of Tonkin. He was an ADJ3 in the DASH section. We have a few old pictures of the BC & the Oriskany moored side by side at Subic Bay P.I. The B.C. did preliminary repairs on the O boat after the 1966 fire. The fire killed 44 officers and enlisted. After the repairs were made the Oriskany returned to San Diego for more repairs.

SHE WAS THE BEST AMONG THE BEST IN HER CLASS FROM ALL U.S. NAVAL SHIPS THAT EVER SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHOM HAD AWARDED FIVE BATTLE EFFICIENCIES IN FIVE CONSECUTIVE YEARS. SHE EARNED THAT RECORDS IN UNITED STATES NAVAL HISTORY. I AM VERY PROUD AND HONOR TO BE A PART OF IT.

I THANK YOU AMERICA FOR ALLOWING ME TO SERVE THE FINEST SHIP IN THE NAVAL HISTORY. THANKS AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Remember working with the MA's (DP) keypunching cards to run the payroll and pay records on. Had a great time and now wish I had stayed aboard instead of being transfered to shore duty (USN&MCRTC Pasadena) - worst duty ever. I have renewed some past memories with several BC shipmates in the past couple years. I remember the ORISKANY incident and pulling alongside her to assist in repairs. We were suppose to be on our way to Hong Kong.

Maybe I could be remembered as that fella that built the electronic organ from "obsolete" spare parts, in the R4 shop and played it on the open deck in concert underway, on the 65 cruise to Kao Chung (sp?) Taiwan, Subic Bay Philapines. A low point, with a good ending, was when Master Chief "Cash" Register, informed me in his Mr Hyde mode (As in Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde), to report to the bridge for captain's mast, only to find out that it was an honorly mast for a number of the electronics gang and a handshake from Capt. Giovanni.

It would be great to hear from anyone in the old gang. Matt

Comments: I served aboard the BC from Feb 66 to Jan 68. I was a GMG3. I worked in the Armory and on the gun mount. I have spent more than 30 years trying to find my old friends. GMG2 Dennis Zane, GMG3 Robert Roberts, MM3 Eddie Skeel, GMG3 Robert Donahue, GMG2 Smith. I have found Dennis Montgomery in WI, and John Banks in NC. No other two year period stands out in my memory more than the time aboard the BC. I am now retired from the Post Office after 32 years.

Comments: I have a nice picture of the USS Bryce Canyon AD36 for sale on EBay. I can't tell for sure where the pic was made, but it appears to be in a tropical locale. Those serving aboard the vessel are also in the pic lining the boat from stem to stern. If you are interested, email me for additional details or go to ebay.com and search for the item -- just type in USS Bryce Canyon or search for me -- under search choose search for seller and then type in kylecat@bellsouth.net. I would like to see this photo end up in the hands of someone who will treasure it the way it was meant to be.

My father also loved to play basketball on ship, and was on the team.

Unfortunately he passed away on in 1997......I am trying to write about his life.....any information about what it was like to serve on the Bryce Canyon during that time would be helpful.

Thank you,

Christy Decker

Being a collector of nautical antiques, I jumped at the chance to own a piece of history. The binnacle was covered with multiple coats of gray paint, but underneath it all I found a beautiful teakwook stand with solid brass hardware. I found a compass certificate tucked inside that identified it was from the Bryce Canyon AD36. I am looking for anything I can find...especially photo's of the ship and the men that served her well. If anyone has photos taken aboard the Bryce Canyon, I would love to see them!!!

Comments: Reported aboard the Lady in Feb.1961 served there thought my discharge in oct. 1964. During that time I found out what a deck crawler was and did not like it,within 6 weeks I Talk my way to the galley, where I spent the balance of my tour. Darn time has a way slipping by, almost 40 years now and I can still here those open mount 5" guns going off. Thirteen of us came straight boot camp (by ship) to Subic Bay to report for duty.We ran from one peir to another to board her and where told to set on the main deck just behind 01 deck, we did.Within 5 minutes we where underway. We were about one hr. out, when we heard General Quarters and guys where running all over the ship. A 3rd class of some type stop long enought to throw a ball of cotten at us and said,"HERE YOU MIGHT NEED THIS." About 30 sec.went by before we knew what the cotton was for. MY GOD I had never heard anything as loud as that rear 5" gun in my young life. the whole rear of the ship shudder and a flame from that gun must have been 30 ft. long. I guess I'm like most people and that is, you really don't stop to smell the roses until your much older. My last 6 months was the best. In charge of the CPO MESS where I met my company comander from boot camp 2 weks before discharge. If any knows the where abouts of Raul Robles or Jesse Roe, let me no how to say Hi. Comments: The flag is a Pennant Signal Size 4 Formation. I messed up and didn't edit my first massage. I bought it from e-bay. I hope that someone will be able to help me. I'm also looking for a Blue Jackets Manual of that period.

Comments: I served aboard the USS Bryce Canyon AD-36 1960 - 1962. The BC made her last WestPac cruise that I am aware of 1960/61. In [early] 1962, sent to Pearl Harbor (Ford Island). Stationed at her berth in front of the Admin Building for the entire six months! The Little Lady's (Tin Cans) still came by for their occassional remodeling!! by the Heavey and Light Machine Shops, Enginnering, etc. And she still had rated as the number two ship in all the Pacific Fleet for food--is was what the Destroyer Boys called "Shipping over chow."

The crew also observed a large portion of the building of the Memorial over the USS Arizona.

The Bryce Canyon, was the VERY 1st US Navy, 'Ship of the Fleet' to receive the Gold "E" due to excellent regular Fleet Inspections in all five of the following: (1) Gunnery, (2) Engineering, (3) Deck, (4) Communication, and (5) Supply -- FIVE YEARS IN-A-ROW!!! I believe her Gold E was given in 1959 or 1960, shortly before I transferred aboard.

She was a Great Lady...

Comments: I served aboard the Bryce Canyon from about June, 1951 until about November, 1951. I was a RM in C Div. The ship was relieved for rotation to CONUS in about November by the USS Hamul AD20. I transferred to the Admiral's staff on the Hamul to remain in the Far East. I believe he was ComDesFlot1. I was not aware that Bryce Canyon has been awarded a battle star.

Comments: Ted Barker, my E-mail name should be changed to BryceCanyon AD36@AOL.Com. I have been getting a number of inquiries. Sadly, most of them from children who either never knew or never asked about their fathers service while he was still alive. Thanks, Ted. Regards, Phil Car

Ted, The Bryce Canyon (AD 36) was commissioned in 1950 at Charleston
S.C. I am a plank-owner (was on board at commissioning).

She was sent to Japan either late in 1950 or early in 1951. She carried
the flag of DesDiv 16, if my memory serves. She was awarded a Battle
Star for her service in the Korean War.

I was in the Navigation Division ("N"Div.)

The destroyer Walke (DD723) was a Sumner Class. She was built at Bath
Iron Works in Maine. She was mined in Korean waters and took heavy
casualties among the Quartermasters and Signalmen. I was there when she
was brought along side the Bryce Canyon to be repaired.

That's all I can give you about them, off the top of my head.

Your questions might trigger other memories, however.

I was aboard the Bryce Canyon AD36, when she was commissioned in

I was aboard when the USS Ward hit a mine. If I can remmember right,
it was on a sunday morning. Some of the crew had gotten up to go to
chow. Most of those that was killed had slept in.

On checking online, I found out that Bryce Canyon AD36 had won a
battle star for service in Korea. I was never notified of this. Nor
was I ever issued a battle star. I wonder how many others that served
aboad never knew.
