Comments: I served the USS Bryce Canyon AD-36 from 1956 to 1961 with highest and utmost RESPECT OF EXCELLENCE. SHE WAS THE BEST AMONG THE BEST IN HER CLASS FROM ALL U.S. NAVAL SHIPS THAT EVER SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHOM HAD AWARDED FIVE BATTLE EFFICIENCIES IN FIVE CONSECUTIVE YEARS. SHE EARNED THAT RECORDS IN UNITED STATES NAVAL HISTORY. I AM VERY PROUD AND HONOR TO BE A PART OF IT.

I THANK YOU AMERICA FOR ALLOWING ME TO SERVE THE FINEST SHIP IN THE NAVAL HISTORY. THANKS AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Comments: "Sonny" was a nickname I remember growing up, but I don't remember how he got it. He joined the Navy in 1950 and faught throughout the war aboard ship where his home port was stationed in San Deigo. Don't know of the ship's numbers or division he may have been a part of, but I'm in the Navy too, and would be interested if I knew more about him during that time.

Comments: It was great seeing this site. Remember many happy times while aboard the BC. Made DK1 while aboard. Remember working with the MA's (DP) keypunching cards to run the payroll and pay records on. Had a great time and now wish I had stayed aboard instead of being transfered to shore duty (USN&MCRTC Pasadena) - worst duty ever. I have renewed some past memories with several BC shipmates in the past couple years. I remember the ORISKANY incident and pulling alongside her to assist in repairs. We were suppose to be on our way to Hong Kong.

Indeed - She was a great Lady.

His wife, Virginia, passed away about three weeks later. Herb was a prince of a guy and almost like a brother since my parents' home was his "second" home. He is buried a few miles south of Dillon.

Comments: I served HER from 10/29/56 to 03/14/61. I was in 2nd Division for the first 2 years. Therafter, I was transferred to R1 Division (Pipe Fitter & was promoted to SFP3 within 1 year) until my released from active duty on 03/14/61. I served HER on HER 3 WESTPAC DEPLOYMENTS from 1956 to 1961. In 1958, I painted the Battle Efficiency "E" and second Hash Marks. But, Kitterman BM3 has the honor to be posted his picture on the 1957/58 WESTERN PACIFIC CRUISE ANNUAL ALBUM. Before I left her after 1960/1961 WESTPAC deployment, SHE was on HER way to receive HER 5th "E" AWARD.

TO ALL SHIPMATES REGARDLESS OF YEARS YOU SERVED HER, I WISH EVERYONE HAS GOOD HEALTH, WEALTH AND HAPPY LIFE. THANKS AND GOOD LUCK.

Comments: Best of years 1964-67. Lots of good memories. I have many still shots of crewmates in my mind but don't recall many names of the electronics gang. Maybe I could be remembered as that fella that built the electronic organ from "obsolete" spare parts, in the R4 shop and played it on the open deck in concert underway, on the 65 cruise to Kao Chung (sp?) Taiwan, Subic Bay Philapines. A low point, with a good ending, was when Master Chief "Cash" Register, informed me in his Mr Hyde mode (As in Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde), to report to the bridge for captain's mast, only to find out that it was an honorly mast for a number of the electronics gang and a handshake from Capt. Giovanni.

It would be great to hear from anyone in the old gang. Matt

Comments: I have a nice picture of the USS Bryce Canyon AD36 for sale on EBay. I can't tell for sure where the pic was made, but it appears to be in a tropical locale. Those serving aboard the vessel are also in the pic lining the boat from stem to stern. If you are interested, email me for additional details or go to ebay.com and search for the item -- just type in USS Bryce Canyon or search for me -- under search choose search for seller and then type in kylecat@bellsouth.net. I would like to see this photo end up in the hands of someone who will treasure it the way it was meant to be.

She was sent to Japan either late in 1950 or early in 1951. She carried
the flag of DesDiv 16, if my memory serves. She was awarded a Battle
Star for her service in the Korean War.

I was in the Navigation Division ("N"Div.)

The destroyer Walke (DD723) was a Sumner Class. She was built at Bath
Iron Works in Maine. She was mined in Korean waters and took heavy
casualties among the Quartermasters and Signalmen. I was there when she
was brought along side the Bryce Canyon to be repaired.

That's all I can give you about them, off the top of my head.

Your questions might trigger other memories, however.

I was aboard the Bryce Canyon AD36, when she was commissioned in
Charleston S.C. I am a plank-owner. I served aboard until June 1952.

I was aboard when the USS Ward hit a mine. If I can remmember right,
it was on a sunday morning. Some of the crew had gotten up to go to
chow. Most of those that was killed had slept in.

On checking online, I found out that Bryce Canyon AD36 had won a
battle star for service in Korea. I was never notified of this. Nor
was I ever issued a battle star. I wonder how many others that served
aboad never knew.
