Comments: Searching for any imfo on Homer Earl Blackburn a cook on the Boxer 1948 - 1951 could of been sooner. He died while on leave July 1951. He was in a rearend collision while returning to ship after his leave? He was with at least three others and He died days later in the Hosp from burns? The dilema is the ship was in Korea and returned Sept to Cali. My grandfather died in Cali. Hosp. on July 28 1951 Anyone know anything. Thanks so much.

Info on Tex Robinson a flyer off carrier?

Comments: I am seeking anyone with information or knowledge of Calvin Lester Robinson. He sometimes went by the name of Tex or Robbie. This was my father, and I know very little about him. I had been told: He was a pilot who flew off of Air Craft Carriers, during the Korean war. Would that mean he was in the Air Force or the Navy? Could it have been either? He was a Texan. He played many musical instruments, especially Guitar, Fiddle, piano, and accordion. He loved to entertain people. (He was a good Yodeler- in that Texas style) He was tall (6 2 to 6 4) and had a good sense of humor, practical joker, And of course he loved to chase the women. I know he did not die in Korea- I would not be here. I was born in 59. He did maintain a Pilots License after he returned home, he used to take us up in a Cessna on occasion. I dont have much more info, than that. I dont know if he is alive or dead! The lack of knowledge has pretty much possessed me over the years since he disappeared.

Thank you, for anything you can tell me, no matter how big or slight. I cant describe this feeling of knowing nothing of my Dad. It is as if he vanished from the earth 40 years ago.

Comments: My Dad, W.W."Bud" Spear was a Skyraider pilot on the Boxer when on May 9th,1953 he was landing on board and had his engine drop off upon hitting the deck and starting a fire. Anyone remember Joe Ollervides???

Comments: Hello, my father told me about the explosion on the USS Boxer August 1952. There are many stories he has held in and we do not or probably will never know about. He told us about this explosion for the first time. He was talking about his life in the Navy and I told him Dad you are lucky to be alive. He started to choke up, grabbed his face and cry. He then said his friends were killed in that explosion. I could feel the pain my dad had in his heart at that time. There was silence and I comforted him and sadly told us about the explosion. My father's name is Joe Ollervides. He retired from the Navy in the early 1970's. Would anyone of you remember him. I came across this website on my search for the USS Boxer. Thank you. Mini Kaplan

Comments: One story I can remember is of an Asian worker that got his hand caught under a transmission as it was being loaded unto a pallet. The worker made no effort to let anyone know of his demise, yet my father saw this and had the transmission lifted. It could have been an engine too, I just can't remember. The worker wanted to go back to work since he could not afford to take the time off to fix his hand (dangling fingers). My father then went to all his buddies and asked them to put their pocket money into a hat and helped the worker out to get the operation needed and time off. This worker was deeply obliged to my father and did many things for him afterwards. I wish I could find who this worker was and his family, but this was a long time ago. i also wish I could find some of the crew mates he was with. Feel free to email me. jason@milescoscientific.com

Comments: We were doing air ops off So Cal. with a civilian movie crew taking pictures from our helicopter. Our helo crashed into a gun tub below the elevator killing the pilot and the camera man. I think this happened in '53 or '54 and would like to talk with anyone that remembers the crash. I was a crewman with HU-1 on the flight deck, and spent the next week aboard awaiting the Admirals investigation.. I'd like to know when this happened for my historical records.. Comments: First large ship that I served aboard (even the six months mess cooking)was also aboard when the ship caught fire was working port side as a spotter when i saw the smoke come billowing out of the cat walk . thout rthe plane I was attending to caught something afire in the cat walk . Was i in for a surprise I did not know that the crew could react as fast as they did . I really enjoyed my time aboard her and all but one of the next five of them Had to quit or reenlist with a contract not to stay on that ship.

Boxer collision with Oil Tanker in 53

Comments: Does anyone have pictures of the collision the Boxer had with the oil tanker...USS Cacapon AO-52?Or remember that frightful day? We were fueling the Boxer at sea when it pulled away and snapped all the hoses like string and came right back at us and did quite a bit of damage. I was on deck at the time...and ran for cover. I didn't think we would make it alive because we were fully loaded. We returned back to the States 3 months sooner. Comments: This is in answer to Mary Lawson under "Sea School Marine." My name is Royce Peterson and I was with the Marine detachment on the Boxer 1948-51 at the same time your father, George Lawson and friend Roy Haley were there and knew them well. I found your message while searching for Boxer news for my son, also a marine who is to be stationed on the new Boxer(LHD-4). USS Boxer - Rahberger

Comments: My father, Edward James Rahberger, was aboard the USS Boxer in the Korean War and was an Aircraft Director. My best guess is that it was in the early 50's. He would have been 19 or 20 years old. I am trying to put together a "remembrance booklet" for his birthday and if you remember him or can tell me any stories I would appreciate it. I believe that the Commanding Officer, at that time, was Captain Dennis J. Sullivan of Warwick, NY.

Boxer fire during Korean War

Comments: A friend of mine was aboard the USS Stembel when they picked up several men who went overboard during a fire on the Boxer in 1952. Some of those men were Duane Rouse, Melvin Harris, Arthur Richartz, James Myers, James Claud, Samuel Mange, Charles Cardiel, Kenneth Everson, Alfred Opalka, Sinean Tash, Robert Bowes, Donald Baymiller, Kenneth White, Gilbert Leach, David Dickinson, JJ McGunnes, TW Vose, and many others.

With the outbreak of the Korean conflict she was pressed into service to carry planes to the fighting. During 14-22 July 1950 she made a record crossing of the Pacific, 8 1/2 days, with 150 Air Force and Navy planes and a thousand troops. On her return trip (27 July-4 August), she cut the record to 7 days, 10 hours, and 36 minutes.

After fast repairs she departed for the Far East 24 August, this time to join TF 77 in giving air support to the troops. Her planes supported the landing at Inchon (15 September 1950) and other ground action until November, when she departed for the west coast and overhaul.

Boxer departed San Diego for her second Korean tour 2 March 1951. Again she operated with TF 77 supporting the ground troops. She returned to San Francisco 24 October 1951.

Sailing 8 February 1952 for her third tour in Korea, Boxer again served with TF 77. During 23-24 June her planes took part in the heavy strikes against the North Korean hydro-electric complex and on 5 August she had nine men killed and two seriously injured in a fire which swept the hangar deck. After emergency repairs at Yokosuka, Japan (11-23 August), Boxer returned to duty off Korea. She arrived at San Francisco 25 September and underwent repairs until March 1953.

The carrier departed for the Far East 30 March 1953 and went into action a month later. She took part in the final actions of the Korean conflict and remained in Asiatic waters until November.
