Comments: I am looking for any one who remembers 1955/56 cruise in which the Boxer was in or about the operational area of Operation Redwing. I know that the ship was there because I sat on the fan-tail and watched the sky light up from the atomic explosion. I served in the Air Group with HS-4. I believed it was right after the ship left Sasabo Japan. Any information would be of help.

My father is still alive, Wallace Moore "Tex" Ingram, he is 81 but he has told me precious little about my Uncle the pilot that gave his life fighting for our freedom. We were fueling the Boxer at sea when it pulled away and snapped all the hoses like string and came right back at us and did quite a bit of damage. I was on deck at the time...and ran for cover. I didn't think we would make it alive because we were fully loaded. We returned back to the States 3 months sooner. I believe it happened in 53 If anyone has any pictures of this collision please e-mail me at: Nichesta@aol.com Thanks

Comments: A friend of mine was aboard the USS Stembel when they picked up several men who went overboard during a fire on the Boxer in 1952. Some of those men were Duane Rouse, Melvin Harris, Arthur Richartz, James Myers, James Claud, Samuel Mange, Charles Cardiel, Kenneth Everson, Alfred Opalka, Sinean Tash, Robert Bowes, Donald Baymiller, Kenneth White, Gilbert Leach, David Dickinson, JJ McGunnes, TW Vose, and many others.
Please email me if you have any info.

Ticonderoga) ...July 1950 she made a record crossing of the Pacific... .....she had nine men killed and two seriously injured in a fire which swept the hangar deck. With the outbreak of the Korean conflict she was pressed into service to carry planes to the fighting. During 14-22 July 1950 she made a record crossing of the Pacific, 8 1/2 days, with 150 Air Force and Navy planes and a thousand troops. On her return trip (27 July-4 August), she cut the record to 7 days, 10 hours, and 36 minutes. After fast repairs she departed for the Far East 24 August, this time to join TF 77 in giving air support to the troops. Her planes supported the landing at Inchon (15 September 1950) and other ground action until November, when she departed for the west coast and overhaul. Boxer departed San Diego for her second Korean tour 2 March 1951. Again she operated with TF 77 supporting the ground troops. She returned to San Francisco 24 October 1951. Sailing 8 February 1952 for her third tour in Korea, Boxer again served with TF 77. During 23-24 June her planes took part in the heavy strikes against the North Korean hydro-electric complex and on 5 August she had nine men killed and two seriously injured in a fire which swept the hangar deck. After emergency repairs at Yokosuka, Japan (11-23 August), Boxer returned to duty off Korea. She arrived at San Francisco 25 September and underwent repairs until March 1953. The carrier departed for the Far East 30 March 1953 and went into action a month later. She took part in the final actions of the Korean conflict and remained in Asiatic waters until November. USS Boxer received eight battle stars for her service off Korea From: DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN NAVAL FIGHTING SHIPS

Sea School Marine
From: Mary_Lawson@prenhall.comDate: Tue, 30 Apr 96
My father, GSgt. George W. Lawson (USMC ret.), is a veteran of the
Korean War. He was a Sea School Marine and served aboard the USS
Boxer during the Inchon invasion and at least one other tour to Korea.
When I told him about the search capabilities available through your
site, he asked if I could post a notice re: Roy M. Haley .
Sgt. Haley (serial number 1071611) also served aboard the Boxer during
the war and was best man at my parent's wedding (Jan. 12, 1951 - Alameda
Naval Base - my mother's maiden name is Doris Mattocks). They lost touch
during the sixties.
Currently there is no listing for the USS Boxer under the Naval
listings in the "Looking For" section. There is also no way to search
for Marines who served aboard ship. Is it possible to add these?
I can be reached at:
mary_lawson@prenhall.com
if you need any more information.
Thank you for providing this web site. My folks are driving back east
in May and we're planning on visiting the memorial.
