Comments: I want to know more about my dad, Lt Robert Lawrence. He died in 1955 in a peacetime flight after serving as a fighter pilot in the Navy for WWII & the Korean War. Comments: I served on the BHR only one cruise in 1968 in an air squadron. Handle "Blueblazers." In that year we lost three pilots. I wanted to mention their names so they won't be forgotten. Our skipper Cdr. RR Wilson, Lt.jg. Barry Karger, and MIA/KIA Lt. Cdr. Frank Fullerton. RIP

One person here wanted to know how the BHR got it's name. My understanding is Benjamin Franklin's book "Poor Richard's Almanac" is how the Bonnie Dick got her name.

Comments: My father was lost at sea during heavy waters when the ship was in the South Pacific near Japan, He was KIA shortly before he was due to come home to us, and said to be on his final cruise. I only have stories of dad. He came home to see us in the fall of 1958, but I was not quite a year old then.

Home Away from Home

Comments: My 1st travel abroad was a 30 day one way trip from California to Japan on the Bon Homme Richard. Apparently the ship developed an engine problem and we were on board for 30 days. In my 20 yrs of active service this was one of my most memorable experiences. I was just a passenger but I volunteered for any duty on board to keep me occupied. Thanks for the memories.

My grandfather Theodore H. "POP" LeMieux was awarded the Dist/Flying Cross and an Air Medal and Ensign Cook was awarded the Navy Cross for their actions in the "Mission Beyond Darkness" a battle on June 19, 1944 in the Philippines. Comments: The Ernest G. Small was one of the ships which escorted The Bon Homm Richard on 28 November, 62 when the Change of Command ceremony took place; Captain Kline relieved Captain Bullard.

Where in the Western Pacific did this take place and why were these ships in that area? I would appreciate this information as a friend is trying to get proof that he was in waters which would make him eligible to join the Veterans of Foriegn Wars. There is no information on his DD214. I hope to hear from someone.

Bon Homme Richard was recommissioned 15 January 1951 and on 10 May departed San Diego for the Far East. She joined TF 77 off Korea on 29 May and launched her first air strikes 31 May. Bon Homme Richard continued operations with TF 77 until 20 November 1951. The carrier reached San Diego in mid-December and on 20 May 1952 was off again to the Far East.

She joined TF 77 once more on 23 June and took part in the heavy strikes against the North Korean power complex (24-25 June) and the amphibious feint at Kojo (12-16 October). She continued operations against North Korean targets until 18 December 1952 and then steamed to San Francisco where she arrived 8 January 1953.

Her classification was changed from CV-31 to CVA-31, 1 October 1952.

USS Bon Homme Richard received one battle star for her World War II service and five battle stars for participation in the Korean conflict.
