Comments: I was aboard the USS BOLSTER ARS-38 in 1948 & 1949. Was wondering whatever happened to her. I was sent to Radar school at Tresure Island and them transferred to the USS MAGPIE AMS-25. Any help about either ship will be appreciated. Don Curran

Comments: My fater served on the Bolster in 1952-54, he is looking for a few shipmates and friends, he was a diver and was working in the engine room and with the water systems, he also served on the Repose for a while. We are looking for friends and reunions of those there at the same time. I have always enjoyed the stories of dives and rough times on the sea. It was nice to find a web site for the great ships. My father is Charles (Chuck) Ray Tippen he is now 71 yrs old and lives in Sulphur Louisiana, 337-583-2750. Give him a call if you were there too. Thanks Daphne

Comments: I was lucky enough to make one westpac cruse with the ship before being transfered to USS Benewah APB 35. After the westpac trip I went home to get married and when I came back the ship was out to sea. When they came home I helped with the lines. At the bow line they said I had orders to Little Creek VA. The stern line said I was going to Phili. buy the time I got to the gang plank they said I was going to Vietnam. They were all correct. What a way to start a marrage.

Comments: I served on the USS Bolster (ARS-38) 1952-53. I started out as a seaman under Chief Getty. Then I became Log Room Yeoman, and then Ship's Yeoman. I remember a day in the outer Wonson Harbor when we were transferring our Exec (Glen ?)to a ship that was returning to Japan. A shore battery opened up and hit close enough to us that I picked up shrapnel from the shells on the bridge. I never talked with the exec but they were coming pretty close to him, too. Anyone remember?

Comments: I couldn't believe it when I came across all of the comments that have been made about the Bolster. I served on her after the police action. We were all out of Pearl. We did make trips to Austrailia and to new zealand. those were great days. and I missed them dearly after my discharge. Does anyone know how I could get a list of people who served on her during the early sixty's. I have lost track of so many great people.

Comments: I have been thinking a lot about Korea today, on the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of that "police action"--been thinking about being on board the Bolster, the refugees on the island of Cheju, Wonsan Harbor, and Chosan at the Yalu River under the British. Anyone out there remember me and these experiences?

The USS GRAPLE is (ARS-7), a Diver class rescue/salvage ship. I served
on her sister ships, USS GRASP (ARS-24) & USS BOLSTER (ARS-38).
The salvage navy was heavily engaged in the Korean War, close in, and
often under fire. They provided salvage support to the Army, Navy,
Air Force & Marines, Search & Rescue, UDT & special ops operations,
towing, interdiction/patroling, Humanitarian and many other tasks.
I have listed below the records of the eight Diver Class ARS's that I
have certain knowledge of their participation in the Korean War. Many
of them were also WWII and Vietnam veterans.
In the Salvage Navy, we understood ARS not to mean Auxiliary Rescue &
Salvage, but rather "Always Ready Ships". If there was a dirty job to
do, we were the one's to call upon. We paid for this respect in sweat
and blood.

George, I do not have any info on the Sarsi or its crew.
However, I was a seaman on the USS Bolster, ARS-38 and we went up to
relieve the Sarsi and it was gone. Wish I could help more.
Best wishes and good luck.
