Comments: I am interested to see if anyone remembers my Father In Law, Joseph (Joe) Bower. He was on the USS Bennington in 1954 during the explosion. He passed away Aug. 2005. I am working on a scrapbook for my Husband and would love to have additional information to add to it. My Father In Law talked of his time in the Navy, but I never realized how much he had gone through during that time. He was a wonderful Man and is sorely missed by all of us.

Please e-mail if you knew Joe. It would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for friends of Norman Lariviere

Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew Norman Lariviere. He told me the story of the explosion, but I was not listening carefully. His description was graphic and said he had to help identify the dead men. I think he suffered PTSD as a result of this terrible accident. He was fortunate to have been brushing his teeth when it happened. "Water was rising and electrical fires were everywhere...the smell of burned skin permeated the air yet so many men just started to help the wounded". Norman lived in Bennington, VT for many years and was a math teacher. He grew up in Richford, VT. I miss him and want to know if anyone remembers him.

Comments: i am trying to get back on the resident council. have published the retsil reporter (our home's newsletter each of the two times i have lived here). have any of you heard of the cold war recognition certificate (for service from 1945-1991) a medal is apparently also available. www.coldwar.army.mil cut and paste? i was told of this just today by a 1st class petty officer on shore duty for the uss stennis and his crew who came over to visit the vets who live here. tommorow i plan to visit our veterans benefits specialist and verify (not yet done). i would love to hear from any one from my time period and who might have known me (especially from the navigation department). i wish you and yours MUCH good health peacelovejoy drbob ps, like trivia games? i founded a team of 111 players from 17 countries (classicalmusic/mensan) on wwww.funtrivia.com by the end of our global challenge games we will have over 45,000 players playing world-wide. one can play for free (although to save your scores/statistics after you have played 300 games will require $20/6 months. do join us (try it out and send me an email on that site (there i am drbobwill).

Keywords: from bootcamp san diego to quartermaster school (bainbridge, md) chose the bennington (in process of being recommissioned then off on shakedown cruises (halifax, ns and cuba (gitmo), haiti and jamaica). had asked for jounalist but got quartermaster and loved it (nothing like leaving a straight wake behind). i was on the bridge during the boiler room explosion). had picked the ship because i anticipated it going some time to the med but my enlistment was going to end before the ship went so i got transferred to the uss cabot, cvl-28 where i was a signalman (a rate no longer in service, alas). trying to remember names--well, there was a 3rd class balukas from brooklyn (his daughter might have been a national class pool player?), bill? whose family had manufactured the thick white coffee cups we had, a guy whose family lived up in a suburb in boston, he took us (a group of friends) to his family's home where his mom cooked a pineapple pie (the only one i ever had and i still remember how good it tasted--the father was in charge of the early farmer's market (which may have been near faneuil hall (with the grasshopper wind vane?), and john? gardner (from possibly provo utah (utah for sure, not so sure about the city) who had been with me through either boot camp and/or quartermaster school and may have accompanied by train across from san diego to bainbridge?). while the ship was being recommissioned i use to visit new york city and go to the museums and the uso's--went to all of them: catholic, protestant, jewish), the symphony orchestra (remembering catching a rehearsal of arturo toscanini), used to have a box seat at the levintritt foundation (for aspiring pianists and composers, went to a gagaku concert instead of hearing dylan thomas read aloud his poetry (sorry about that choice) dt died shortly thereafter, got goosebumps listening to kirsten flagstad sing the role of isolde in wagner's tristan und isolde (by age 15 i had ushered at 35 different operas before i stopped counting), went sightseeing all over the area had a totally marvelous and intellectually most exciting time. new yorkers treated me with loving care and made my life a joy. i have thousands of memories like this from my time on the bennington. i am sure you do as well. although i was on other ships, i consider the bennington my home ship. good health peacelovejoy drbob

Comments: I was aboard the Bennington when she exploded off Quonsit Point. Just prior to being transferred to the Bennington, I was assigned to the USS Leyte CVA32, which exploded in the same way the Bennington did. The Leyte exploded in Boston Harbor. I was then transferred to the USS Lake Champlain, where I finished my duty tour. Fortunately I was not injured in either explosion. I lost several friends to these explosions. It took several years before I was comfortable when loud noises occured

Comments: Went on board this great ship in 1955, straight from Service School Command in Great Lakes. The S-5 personnel were all so "reat and kind" putting me to work, at that time, until such a time that I found my way "around" learning from those "old timers". But I did have a great time working and going on liberty with them. Great Sailors doing a great job on board a great ship, on a great Navy. I hope someone among them will remember me, along with my fond memories...
