I am his widow seeking any help I can possibly receive. He filed for benefits from VA in 2009. His claim was rejected as has the 2 I have submitted because he was classified as an "Airman". He served aboard the USS Palau in1952 & boarded the USS Bennington. While she was coming in to pick up John et al, one of the catapults blew causing lives to be lost & many injured. John boarded her & she went to to Rhode Island under her own steam where she was repaird. He then returned to the Palau where he was involved in the decommissioning Keywords: Aircraft Carriers USS Bennington and USS Palau |

Interest is that he was a friend and classmate at Yale, '52 and in our NROTC unit. Our class necrology shows his death as 1954. A little closure here. Details? Thanks, Ron Flucker Keywords: |

He told me the story of the explosion, but I was not listening carefully. His description was graphic and said he had to help identify the dead men. I think he suffered PTSD as a result of this terrible accident. He was fortunate to have been brushing his teeth when it happened. "Water was rising and electrical fires were everywhere...the smell of burned skin permeated the air yet so many men just started to help the wounded". THE DAY THE CATAPULT EXPLODED |
| JAY JOHNSON wrote on November 16, 1999 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My Father has told me stories of the day the catapult exploded. He was trapped below locked down until the fire was under control. They breathed through pillow cases to filter out the smoke. He wonders sometimes if any of the friends he served with are still are still living. His name is Will Johnson , some called him "Sonny ," He also served on the Valley Forge. thanks for your time, Jay Johnson e-mail kkj107@aol.com Keywords: |
