Comments: I was on the USS Bellatrix AKA 3 when she made the Pribloff Island run in 1953. It was one of the highlights of my 8 yr career at sea. We carried everything imaginable from Seattle to the Pribloffs, including burlap bags of coal. We backloaded fur seal oil and fur seal meal bound for the States. The smell of fur seal meal cannot be soon forgotten. I and some of my shipmates were shipwrecked for a few hours when our cargo barge went aground on the rocks and the outgoing tide left us high and dry. I have some photos taken of us in our artic gear. If you are interested I can e-mail. Now --over half a century later and I still swagger like a sailor--not from alcohol but from old age. (Ha)

Comments: To anyone interested...I just spent several days aboard the Bellatrix, docked in New Orleans. I was there as a volunteer with the SPCA. We took pictures and I would be happy to email anyone once I have them on a disc. It's an old ship! but comfortable and the crew was very accomodating. I am so proud of our military!

Comments: Bellatrix was my first duty assignment out of ET school. Reported aboard after recommissioning in 1953, went to the Craig yatds, then to Korea. Was home for christmas then went to the Yards in Pearl Harbor. This trip was unique ,in that both the crew's personal vehicles and families were transported to Hawaii for the period of the overhaul. I had been accepted into the fleet NROTC program and left the ship inMay 1953 for Bainbridre NTC. I understand that the final trip before decommissioning was to the Pribiloff Islands off Alaska to pick up a cargo of seal manure and return it to the lower 48. It is hard to believe that all that happened nearly 50 years ago. Phil Rathbun

Served aboard the Bellatrix AKA3, Ex Merchant Marine Ship Raven during
the Korean war. Carried Army trucks and supplies from Japan to Korea
and took part in a few amphibious landings there. Did not see the

Ship news article
From: VGMJJM@aol.com
Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999
This article appears in the Amphibious Force Pacific Fleet newspaper
"The Amphibian, dated Saturday December 6 1952 " USS Bellatrix Saves
Fishermen From Seas.
Twelve Okinawa fishermen were saved from possible drowning recently when
they were rescued from the sea by a lifeboat crew from the USS Bellatrix
(AKA-3).
The sea rescue took place as the Bellatrix was enroute to Hong Kong from
Yokosuka, Japan, after having been diverted from her usual course by a
typhoon.
While the ship was steaming about sixty miles southeast of Formosa, M.C.
Smith, SN, a lookout, sighted an object. As the ship drew nearer, the
object was identified as a closely-packed group of men clinging to the
wrecked remains of a wooden boat.
Under the supervision of C.H. Webster, BMC,. the ship's lifeboat was
lowered to rescue the men. Kenneth A. Hubbard served as boat coxswain,
and returned the survivors to the Bellatrix.
Once of board, the fishermen were all given an examination by the
Medical Officer. Two men, who were badly injured, were taken to the
ship's sick bay for treatment.
The survivors were originally from a small island of the Okinawa group
lying 130 miles east of Formosa.Their 150-foot boat had been torn apart
by a typhoon and 15 of the 27 crewmen had washed overboard.
Those picked up by the Bellatrix had been clinging to the remainder of
their boat for two days.
Later the Bellatris was routed to return the shipwrecked fisher-men to
their homes at Okinawa.
