Comments: My father was a photographers mate on the Arcadia during the Korean conflict. When he passed away I got the pictures he took of the ship and crew during public ceremonies. I would be happy to share them with anyone who is interested.

I'd love to find out the names of at least some of the people who served with my Dad.

Hey I was young I had fun. The Arc was my first ship and I remember most of the S1 division fondly.

That was the time when the Navy offered young stupid boys a chance to become a useful man

My first division officer Gerry Young was a Warrant Officer and I thought he was GOD. All I ever wanted to do was to be like him.

I retired as a CWO SC in July 1978 and hope I came close to being the officer he was.

Hope to hear from some shipmates

John Davis wrote on 2003-02-02 17:47:39.0

Comments: I stood the first deck watch as QM, set after the Commissioning ceremony on 9/13/45 under an old mustang who was a former Chief. A great many of the crew , including myself had been assigned fresh out of service schools with no previous sea duty. This might account for the radar operator fixing on the towing tug instead of the target in a night firing exercise and the antiaircraft crew firing at the tow plane instead of the target who also made a quick exit.Lucky the war was over. After shakedown the Arc was sailed to South Carolina and mothballed.

Comments: I served on the Arcadia from 1963 to 1965. We made a few trips to Puerto Rico and a trip to Orange Texas. Thank God the skipper didn't like ice and snow, eh? I was an Aviation Storekeeper 2nd Class on board to keep track of the "Polish, Plastic canopy", the only aviation item on board. Actually I was there for the Dash Copter spares that never materialized. I did manage to get my name on the Sailor of the Quarter plaque that was mounted just aft of the mess deck. I have often hoped that someone pulled that plaque down and kept it safe before the Arcadia was turned in to razor blades. I would be grateful to hear from whom ever has it or some one that knows where it went.

Comments: The only sea duty I saw was a trip to Earl, NJ, to on-load ammo. We then spent the weekend @ the 42nd pier in New York City followed by a trip to Pureto Rico to off-load ammo. Once in PR, we took up a spot next to a pier and commenced to take liberty for what seems now to be an incredibly short period of time. A trip back to Newport where we once again resumed guarding the pier. I was only on the ship for a short peiord of time, perhaps 3 or 4 months. It was fun! I was looking forward to trip to Key West when I was re-move to the base hospital to have my appendix removed.

Comments: Looking for Boilermakers who were on board from Mar.1960 to July,1964. Like to hear from them.

I can remember we made two trips to Korea, I remember making three or four trips but some of them could have been on the USS Fletcher (DD\DDE445). We entered the combat zone on 28 June 1953 and departed July 27,1953. This is from the Chief of Naval Personnel

Keywords: I'm sorry I do'nt have the exact dates for the USS George (DE697) but I served on board from Apr.1949 to March 1953. The George was in San Diego at the time I was transfered to the USS Fletcher (DD445) in Pearl Harbor in Apr. 1953 to Jun.1955.I'm sorry but that is all I have.
