Comments: Flew on a MATS super-connie from Travis to Itazuki to catch the Ajax in Japan. I went by train from Jokahoma to Sasebo to catch the end of her 6 month rotation there, and then went to Yokosuka for her 6 month rotation there. Then returned to the US for start of 6 month rotation in San Diego. Really had a great time, and outstanding learning experience in the Electronic repair shop.

I knew Jan in I believe 1961-63. I know that he was on the USS AJAX. He also served with a David Vidola and Ken Ericson. If anyone knows the whereabouts of Jan or his friends, please contact me. I know that Jan had family at one time in Stone Mountain, Georgia and I think a sister in California. We are all anxious to see him again!

Comments: This is just a shot in the dark, but my father, the late Patrick Cole Downey of Suffern, NY served as a radio man on the USS Ajax, as well as USS Hector during the Korean War. One night, years ago at the dinner table, he broke down in front of my family and related to us how he and several other of his shipmates had come under fire, and how he killed a man in Vietnam while delivering mail, on a river somewhere and how the action was kept secret afterward. Any information would be more than welcome. Regards, Patrick C. Downey Jr. USMC '86, '89

As I age, it seems important to be able to contact any shipmate just to remember old times. It was great duty as was the crew both ships company as was the repair dept. The repairs that were completed during the Viet Nam era to keep the ships in the war zone I feel could not be matched by anyone ship. All the memories of those days are precious. Your emails are appreciated and will be answered ASAP. Big Al

Comments: Dear : USS AJAX AR-6 Crewmen:
I found your name on a list of USS AJAX crew members on the USS AJAX Ship's Roster internet website. Our firm represents the family of Mr. Richard Boucher who served with you on board the USS AJAX from 1953 to 1956 as a Boiler tender.
I am writing this letter to ask for your help. Mr. Richard Boucher recently passed away. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer that the doctors agree was caused by Mr. Richard Boucher's occupational exposure to asbestos. His family is now involved in a wrongful death asbestos lawsuit, against the manufacturers, suppliers and civilian contractors. We are not pursuing the government in this action.
Unfortunately, Mr. Richard Boucher's family does not know the names of all of the various asbestos containing materials and the equipment that were used on the USS AJAX. You may remember asbestos-containing products, such as:
-asbestos pipe insulation, -asbestos cement/mud -asbestos canvas or cloth -asbestos block boiler insulation, -valve packing, -pump and flange gaskets, -interior boiler refractory, -floor tile, -asbestos insulated wire, electrical panels with Bakelite insulators, -laminate asbestos board for bulkhead panels and ceiling panels
Do you remember any of the brand names: -Kaiser V-Block Refractory, used in the boilers -Eagle-Picher, -Johns Manville, -Combustion Engineering, Foster Wheeler, Babcock & Wilcox, Cleaver-Brooks, Riley Stoker boilers -Flexitalic, John Crane and Garlock packing and gasket products. -Union Carbide Bakelite electrical insulation board, electrical components -Westinghouse, Micarta covered asbestos bulkhead panels -Cutler-Hammer, Square-D, Westinghouse, Alan-Bradley, and General Cable electrical components, switch gear, control panels, cable and wire. -GE and Westinghouse Turbines
Do you remember which repair yards the USS AJAX put into during the time you served on board this ship. Finally, if you recall any of the civilian contractors that worked on the USS AJAX when she was repaired or overhauled please contact me.
Any information you can provide regarding this ship is extremely important to Mr. Richard Boucher's family. Please contact me at my email address mbasques@braytonlaw.com; call me at (800) 765-7778 extension 342, or write me at Richard Boucher Family, c/o Brayton * Purcell, 222 Rush Landing Road, Novato, CA 94945. I thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Mike Basques Investigator
