THIS WAS MY FATHER'S SHIP |
| BRUCE WINKWORTH wrote on January 14, 2005 City and State: RALEIGH NC Unit: Service or Relationship: - Comments: My father, Ralph Winkworth of Syracuse, N.Y., was an Ensign and later a Lieutenant JG aboard the Abbot during World War II. He joined the crew in Pearl Harbor in 1943 and remained with the ship until after the battle of Leyte Gulf. At least, that's my best recollections of his retelling of his experience during the war. I don't know if anyone who remembers him from the Abbot is cruising these boards, but if you are, this is for you. After leaving active service, my father stayed in the Naval Reserve until 1970, retiring with the rank of Captain. He spent several years as company commander of the Raleigh Naval Reserve Unit, and always spoke fondly of the Abbot. I honestly believe that he loved that ship more than he loved Syracuse University, his alma mater. Of course, he had many more life-altering experiences aboard the Abbot than he did in college. Judging by the way he spoke about the Abbot, I can only assume that the ship and crew were very special. Anyone who remembers Ralph Winkworth from the Abbot, please feel free to contact me at bruce_winkworth@ncsu.edu. I would love to hear from you. Keywords: |

HELLO SHIPMATES |
| TED CUMMINGS wrote on August 10, 2003 City and State: PINE HILL NJ Unit: Service or Relationship: - Comments: I am sorry to say that I only served on Abbot as a Reservist on a cruise from Philadelphiain the late fall of 1964. A sailor never forgets his first ship and I am no exception. My many memories are mostly good ones about the ships Regular company, and all good ones about Abbot herself. Before the cruise I looked up her history and was very proud to serve on such a combat veteran of the South Pacific. For years my most treasured possession was a Zippo lighter with "USS Abbot DD629" and the ships sillhouette embossed on it. Sadly it "went missing" while on active duty in Viet Nam a few years later. I felt as if someone had stolen my wedding ring! About ten or eleven years ago I was working on a job (I am a retired construction Electrician) and talked to a carpenter that was on Abbot as Ships Companyfor that same cruise. While our paths never crossed (that we remembered)while on that cruise, we formed an instant friendship when it was found out that we were shipmates from a very long time ago in our pasts. I would like to say Hey Sailor! to one and all who ever served aboard Abbot, because we were fortunate to be there. Keywords: |
