Comments: I served on CTF77 STAFF from Aug 1971 until March 1973. VADM Hutch Cooper was CTF77 and an outstanding Naval Officer. I was the warroom commander one night and got a call a MIG was airborne. I hurried into his cabin to wake him and snapped on the lights. Admiral Cooper sat up and said "Now I know how it feels to get shot in the head" and added, "kindly turn of the light and tell me what you want." I did and left with my tail between my legs.

I was aboard the Essex when a returning aircraft jumped all of the retaining barriers and came down among about 15, already recovered planes. Seven men were killed in the explosion and the ensuing fire that resulted.
My two best friends during my days aboard the Essex were Norm Ballou, (Radarman)- and John Flood, (Air-control-man) I think the latter is deceased, but I have never been able to locate Norm Ballou since my discharge. Any help in finding him would be greatly appreciated.
