BOAT UNIT 1 |
| EUGENE CRIST wrote on February 1, 2003 City and State: ALEXANDER AR Unit: BOAT GROUP Service or Relationship: - Comments: I was transferred from the Cavalier APA37 in Japan to the Oglethorpe AKA 100 for transportation to Korea and assigned to the boat unit.I was engineer on an LCM , Coxswain was a guy named Brakeman one of the bowhooks named Whitey Hulse and the other I cant remember. Brakeman and Hulse were both from the Cavalier.( Later learned that Hulse has since died.) We made the landing at Inchon going in the first wave on Wolmi-do. After we debarked our troops I started to raise the ramp and the belt broke on the winch and of course the ramp wouldnt raise. But not to worry, the boat had two other belts that apparently were leftovers from WW11 because they each snapped as fast as I could get them on.The beach group Commander got a vehicle with a winch on it and it finally got the ramp up.This took some time and I was yelling at the coxswain to back us off and he was trying manfully but the boat would not move. This was getting a little testy because the Marines were being quite active on the beach and not a place Sailors were supposed to be. When we finally looked behind us, the waters edge was approx. 100 feet away. Inchons tide beat us. The beach group commander has us get out and get in a foxhole with our one carbine ( which none of us knew how to use) and we spent the day on the beach till the tide came back in the evening. We spent the next two weeks or so unloading ships and doing tug duty for LST,S. We lived in the boat for 2 weeks and tied up every night in the tidal Basin. Later we made the Wonson landing and then went back to the Cavalier. Would like to hear from any one who remembers those exciting times. Keywords: LCM Sept. 1950 |

NBG-1 |
| VIRGIL MINCEY wrote on August 19, 2000 City and State: STATESBORO GA Unit: NBG-1 Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Guys, I was just surfing the net and found this site through a dogpile.com search. I was looking for info on my old unit, Naval Beach Group One, Coronado Isl., San Diego, California. I was asst. to the Scheduling Officer in '70-'71, a LtJG Beck. CO was Commodore Charles Koenigsberger, and Cdr. Murline was the XO. Dad was a Marine, joined in 1930 but wasn't inducted until '31, I believe. He was one of the "China Marines" of the '30's (7 yr.), then WWII and then Korea. He retired on my 7th birthday in '55. He passed away in '91. I miss him very much. I grew up on USMC bases until my 7th birth- day, and now that I've reached 50, I realize just how valuable Dad and the USMC have been to me in shaping my life and my values. I just wish that sentiment was more prevalent today in the country. I'm very glad that more people are starting to recognize, at least a bit, how much you Korean vets contributed. I'm far from a great historian, and am more interested in Viet Nam and WWI, in all honesty, because the former was "my" war, and WWII was Dad's biggest "contribution." (? - there are NO small commitments in war, are there?) It's interesting that it was only after Desert Storm that stories and recognition of our wartime histories became at least "palpable" to much of our population, isn't it? I used to scoff at the idea of universal conscription, but now realize that I was probably wrong about that. Older and wiser????? (Hah!) Anyway, it's good that at least there is some recognition coming to all veterans of all our wars, "police actions" and "conflicts" (whatever those last two are, right?). Just curious, but can anyone tell me anything about NBG-1? Is it still active? It's a pretty save assumption that there've been major changes since I left in'71, right? Prior to NBG-1, I served on the USS Bexar, LPA-237. We decommissioned her in '69, and with Slick Willie in the Oval Office, I KNOW it's only been shoved even deeper in the mothballs. Any info anyone can provide would be much appreciated about NBG-1, Commodore Koenigsberger or Cdr. Murline. I guess it's just time for a little reflection and appreciation of things and folks gone by, eh? Keywords: NBG-1 |
