Comments: My father served in the Korea War in the Navy from 1948 to 1952. I was wondering if anyone remembered him from this time frame. His name is Harry Junkert. He passed away in 2002. I was hoping to get some stories about what he was like as a young man. Thank you

I don't remember Karl but the reunion is for Naval Beach Group One, years not mentioned. I can't make those dates due to prior commitment but I plan on calling Karl. Any other reunion or get togethers would be nice to know about. email would also be terrific.

Eugene Crist wrote on 2003-02-01 16:30:46.0
Comments: I was transferred from the Cavalier APA37 in Japan to the Oglethorpe AKA 100 for transportation to Korea and assigned to the boat unit.I was engineer on an LCM , Coxswain was a guy named Brakeman one of the bowhooks named Whitey Hulse and the other I cant remember. Brakeman and Hulse were both from the Cavalier.( Later learned that Hulse has since died.) We made the landing at Inchon going in the first wave on Wolmi-do. After we debarked our troops I started to raise the ramp and the belt broke on the winch and of course the ramp wouldnt raise. But not to worry, the boat had two other belts that apparently were leftovers from WW11 because they each snapped as fast as I could get them on.The beach group Commander got a vehicle with a winch on it and it finally got the ramp up.This took some time& I was yelling at the coxswain to back us off and he was trying manfully but the boat would not move. This was getting a little testy because the Marines were being quite active on the beach and not a place Sailors were supposed to be. When we finally looked behind us, the waters edge was approx. 100 feet away. Inchons tide beat us. The beach group commander has us get out and get in a foxhole with our one carbine ( which none of us knew how to use) and we spent the day on the beach till the tide came back in the evening. We spent the next two weeks or so unloading ships and doing tug duty for LST,S. We lived in the boat for 2 weeks and tied up every night in the tidal Basin. Later we made the Wonson landing and then went back to the Cavalier. Would like to hear from any one who remembers those exciting times.
