Comments: My father PFC. Ronald Paul Knox was a passenger on the General Maurice Rose in the early 1950's for the US Air Force or Marines on his way to England. I found the ship manifest on ancestry.com under militray records. I contacted the military evidently part of his file was destroyed in the fire. I am looking for the port in engalnd in which the ship would dock. It seems I may ahve a brother in England and I would very much like to find him. Any information would be appreciated.
Thnak you for any help, Jodi Knox

Comments: AP-114. General William Mitchell. I am looking for the ships logbook. I am particularly interested in the time period January 1, 1949, to December 31, 1954. My now deceased brother in law was a USMC who was stationed on Guam when the Korean War began. June 25, 1950.
He had come to Guam by ship from San Francisco. He was then transported by ship to South Korea. Wounded, he was later returned to the US via ship.
I know one of those trips was made on the USS General William Mitchell. My surviving sister and his surviving children would like to know this information. Can anyone direct me to a site where I could find the ships record of movement? Thank You. Don White, Jacksonville, FL

The ship sailed from U.S. ports on the west coast to Japan transporting U.S. troops and supplies. My uncle was on the ship over three years.
Does anyone remember him; or know how to obtain the crew list from the Meigs.

I am his sister & I am trying to find out the name of the MSTS that transported him from Camp Stoneman in California to Occupied Japan in May,1950. I have his Domain of the Golden Card, but the name of the ship is to blurred out to read. He was stationed at Camp Hakata when the Korean War started & was one of the first ground troops to go. He was KIA on 14 July 1950. He was in the 24th ID, 63rd FABN, Battery B. I am trying to compile his military history. Any info would be helpful.

Comments: I sailed aboard the Funston in late 1946 on her first voyage transporting dependents to Korea. The ship broke down almost immediately on departure and was towed back into Seattle. We broke down again near Japan but were able to limp into port in Inchon. The captain died on the voyage and was stored in the deep freeze. All in all, quite an adventure for an eight year old boy. I'm trying to lock down the exact dates of departure from Seattle and arrival in Inchon.

My Dad is 87 now and will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of my family to the US as displaced persons. we'd like to prepare a history to pass on to the younger generation of my family.

Comments: I was on the ship above March 10, 1953. I am looking for a lead to where I can find a passenger list from who was on the boat. In April of that year I was 5 years old. I have no idea what ever happened to my father, Paul Edmond Kennedy. He was in the military at that time, but that is all I know. He was on this ship going to Japan leaving out of San Francisco. I have the actual ship record and boarding date. If anybody knows where I can find more information on a passenger list, what brigade was on this, or any other information from this ship or date leaving San Francisco, please feel free to contact me or post here about it. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you

Comments: My fathers active duty was in the early 1950's. He came home in 1955. He left Japan on April 1st (His Birthday)went through Formosa and Okinawa then back to San Fran. He caught a ride with a few fellows to Los Angles then caught a bus back to PHX, Arizona. He then caught another bus to Winslow then caught a ride with the mail man back to the Navajo Rez.to Teesto. From there he waked about 10 miles to his mothers house up on the mountain. Big suprise for everyone in the family that day. My father later reinlisted in the Army agin a few years later due to the lack of jobs. He was later discharged in 1959. He lost a toe to frostbite in Germany. He was a guard at a prison for one of Hitlers men, I do not remember his name. When my father was discharged it was because of T.B. in the leg, the non infectious kind. If you remember my father please contact us, or if you have any memories to share. A Daughter of an Army Vet. Thank you and Have a Great Life.

Comments: My husband & I,the then Airman 1st class Donald M.Patterson sailed 50yrs ago from Portsmouth, England on the Darby April 1st to New York. If there is anyone who remembers this trip I am looking for more details of Port of entry, could have been Brooklyn or Manhatten Beach, Don's trunk has Manhatten Beach stamped on it. Also, anyone with memories to share of this trip. I remember one young woman who shared the cabin was pregnant at that time, we were all sea sick, but she was more so. I traded bunks with her so she would be more comfortable on the bottom one. Seemed like we were very close to the engine room, very loud, difficult to sleep. We were an extra day on the ship because of a very bad storm & the ship turned around to help another ship in distress, another ship was able to give rescue help so we went on our way. During the storm at meal time everything went flying off the table and our waiter hit against the side of the ship breaking his arm, not very pleasant. When the men were able to be with their wives we played card games of 'Crazy 8' & 'Hearts', these were new games to me. I am writing out my voyage to the USA for my children & grandchildren, so any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Margaret

He also remembers the ship breaking down several times before clearing the U.S.We are trying to find the name of the ship if possible. He returned from Yokahama to Seattle in May of 1952 on a military transport. Again, we are trying to find the name of the ship. It was a calm evening and later there was a terrific crash and water came all the way down to the lower decks. Soldiers ran up the ladders thinking the ship was sinking, and sailors stopped them and everything was again calm. The next day there was on the starboard side from the bow to about 40 feet back the deck guard rail was missing . My question is WHAT HAPPENED??? This mystery has been haunting my dad for 50 years. thank you

Richard Faus wrote on 2006-06-24 15:02:01.0
Comments: I was a Sea Scout from Seattle, Washington in the summer of 1963 when I, and about 30 others, cruised aboard the USS Gen. William Mitchell, TAP-114. We were part of a well established special cruise program for Sea Scouts and Sea Cadets and we received training, OJT and stood watches with the Navy crew. I was told at the time that the Mitchell was one of the few MSTS transports with a Navy, as opposed to merchant, crew. One of the Mitchell's primary tasks was transporting troops from the 1st Cavalry Division to and from Korea. At that time we were told there was still combat patrol action on the DMZ. It was particularly memorable when we anchored in the harbor at Inchon and were trasported into shore by LSMs. We were met by fellow Korean land scouts, the mayor of the town and there was a mini-parade for us including transport to the MacArthur monument. Our arrival was special because of the 10 year anniversary of the armistice. Us lowly Sea Scouts were treated like kings. Perhaps some of you folks out there remember the groups of "kids" on board, living in one of the crews quarters.

We were some of the last major troop movements by the DOD to go by sea. 12,500 of us landed about the same time. One of the other ships had a propeller shaft problem in mid pacific ?? Which one was it ?? The USS Mitchell went back to Hawaii and hauled the 3rd Brigade of the 25th Inf. Div. to Vietnam. What happened to the USS Mitchell ?? Was she Scrapped ?

We not only have not been able to find any but we have not even found out what might have happened to them or where they might be. It would be a shame if these logbooks have simply been destroyed. Elvis would not perforn in the traditional variety show produced by the troops on board much to the chagrin of the Air Force Capt that volunteered for that duty. However I did witness Elvis providing piano accompaniment to a trooper singing "I Found My Thrill On Blueberry Hill." Although Elvis would not perform he did agree to produce the show. When this became known anyone with any talent at all wanted in the act. Even a sailor auditioned and was put on the play bill perfoming his act of swallowing knives and eating light bulbs! It was a great show.
Would like to hear from anyone else on that trip and their observances.

Comments: As a sixteen year old Infantry Private I was assigned during my cruise aboard the USNS George W. Goethls to the small Sick Bay as a Latrine "HEAD" Orderly. Enroute from NY to Bremerhaven Germany. Aug or Sept. 1950 and I am not sure of the ship name. I shall NEVER forget a redheaded Navy nurse, Elizabeth Reagan. There were no patients in the sick bay, mostly I waxed the floor. Lt. Regan would make me sandwitches. Being of tender years I would sit for hours oggling her as she sat at her small desk in her white uniform. Would like to communicate with MS Reagan.

Charles Bowling wrote on 2005-07-21 00:00:00.0
Comments: Looking for a Navy Commander who died about 3-4 years ago at age 92. My wife was only 33 when they married and he was 45. He was my wife's husband while they were both assigned to the ship. He was the XO. The Capt was a R.B. Randall. He was 12 yrs older than my wife when they married in 1955 in Tiajuana, Mexico. They parted after he told her he wanted to return to his first wife and children. She never told me his full name and I didn;t ask. She just said his last name was Pratt. He was supposed to divorce her and she just never knew if he did it or not. I would just like to know his full name. Both he and my wife are dead so it can't hurt or make difference now. I recently talked for a long time to the widow of my wife's first husband. I was able to provide her with information that helped her greatly. It involved a child which he had told his wife did not happen. That didn't happen between my wife and Pratt however I would like to see if it's possible to talk to someone close to him. His wife knew of the marriage. She wrote and asked him to come back to her and he did. Thanking you in advance. Charles E. Bowling, US Army, Retired.

Comments: As a 5 year old dependent child, I sailed from New York to England aboard this ship in December 1951 with my mother and brother and sister to join my father who was in England, already. I only remember parts of the journey, but vividly remember that we were in a terrible storm from the first night out through the remainder of our crossing of the North Atlantic. My mother tells the story of our not being able to get into South Hampton to dock because of the weather as well and giving out distress signals all night. I remember ropes in the passageways to hold onto and people being ill and huge waves out the porthole. No one was allowed on deck during the journey because of the storm. I served as a Navy Nurse am now a retired AF nurse and have not traveled by ship in my own career, but I still have a postcard of this ship and it is wonderful to know she has enjoyed a long and successful career. We returned from England on the USS William Darby in the summertime and had a wonderful smooth crossing.

We were on the way to Japan to join my father, USAF Major James Desmond who was stationed there in support of the Korean War operations. I had a ball on the crossing and remember buying slinky toys from the ships store and the initiation of first time crossers of the international date line. Sorry to see the ship is to be (or already has been) scrapped.

Comments: Hello I am looking for a photo of the General Hodges troop ship that has a soldier in the crows nest flipping to bird when the ship enetered port in the USA around 1951. The ship deck was full of people when the photo was taken. My father Howard Williams was this person who climbed to the highest point on the ship. He remembers the photo but it was destroyed by his future wife (my mother) when she viewed the picture. He says that this photo was given out to numerous people by a photographer at the dock. Any help would be appreciated in my search. Thanks

Comments: I was a crew member on the Gen. Butner during the years 1950 to 1952. I would like to find out if there is a USS Butner Association that coordinates yearly reunions etc. I saw that they had a reunion in 2003 in Branson, MO but no other info (contact, e-mail, phone no.) was available. Would also like to communicate with some of my shipmates that may have been aboard during my time aboard.

Comments: Down at the very bottom of this list there is a section entitled "New Section" dated 29 Aug 1998 posted by blxJac@aol.com. It has some good information. In it he says "the Navy is not wild about addmitting that anyone other than they, know how to operate ships." I can believe that.
I never served in what I called the "real" Navy other than boot camp. I always had cushy, laid-back, non-militaristic duty but I did serve a year in the Military Department on the USNS BARRETT (T-AP 196). I had occasion to observe our ship's seamanship as well as some seamanship on the part of the "real" Navy on USS ships.
The "real" Navy was very impressive but then our status in those days was only slightly above that of the galley slaves in Ben Hur. You got good at what you were doing "or else" and you didn't really want to know what the "or else" was. I suppose the merchant marine officers were intelligent, capable and well trained (I really don't know for sure) but I had occasion to observe the seamanship of our merchant marine crew under some difficult situations and it seemed rather inept.

I just stumbled across this thread in the website. I boarded the troop ship CG Morton in Seattle on December 31, 1955 and arrived in Inchon about January 20, 1956. John Taggart was aboard and we later ended up in the same unit, Heavy Mortar Company, 21st Infantry Regt., 24th ID in Korea. Been looking for John a long time and have posted in a variety of sites. Also like to hear from anyone else in the same company serving with me.
If so, give me a call or email.

I remember it like it was yesterday. But what im curious about is,not sure where in NYC we boarded her. I was thinking it was Brooklyn but not sure. This would be in 1964. The ship went to France. Also what im looking for is her retirement? I found a web site tonite with her picture, that really touched my heart. She was truley a beauty, and her staff was very accomidating. If anyone was on that ship that time period, would also love to hear from you. My father was 21 year veteran of the US Army. His pride and joy, and a big part of my life. His retirement was in 1969 out of Fort Niargra NY thank you for your time

Comments: As a Marine corporal, I was part of the draft that left Camp Pendleton in Nov 64 on board the Gaffey. Interested in input from anyone who sailed on the Gaffey (Marine or Army) on this date. Departed San Diego on 5 Nov 64. Visited San Diego in 1996 and the pier that we departed from (warehouse next to the pier) looked the same as it did in '64. The Gaffey lasted until June 2000 when she was used as target practice in a Harpoon firing test in the Pacific. Not bad for an "old lady." We had fun on the ship...my guess was about 500-750 Marines and several hundred Army troops headed for Korea. We Marines boarded last and had to wait several hours in the sun, moving our seabags between the edge of the pier and the warehouse, next to the pier. "Someone" got the bright idea to begin singing the Mickey Mouse theme song. The entire draft of Marines could be heard LOUD and CLEAR throughout the downtown area. Whoever was in charge decided to move us aboard quickly...

Comments: I went to Viet Nam on the Hugh J. Gaffey, in September of 1965. My unit, the 71st Artillery (a Hawk Missile outfit), and a complement of Marines that were also on board, may have been the last to travel by ship to Viet Nam. We stopped in Okinawa on the way, and went through a huge typhoon between Okinawa and Qui Nhon, Viet Nam, our ultimate destination. I've tried to find anything on the internet that mentions our trip, but have failed to do so. Funny story about the trip: some of us were playing poker when some merchant marines came into our bay. One of them told us that gambling was not permitted on the ship. I told him that we only took orders from our officers, not from merchant marines, and suggest he ****-off. A short time later, I was called to my battalion commanders cabin, where I was informed that the man I had insulted was the ship's Captain, and that even my battalion CO took orders from him! I spent the rest of the trip on KP, including our trip through the typhoon.

MSTS Morton and Aultman, military dependents |

Muriel Hogan wrote on 2002-05-24 09:05:49.0
Comments: We were USAF dependents who went to the Phillipines on the MSTS ship USAT General C. G. Morton, formerly the USS General C. G. Morton (AP-138). 28 days to Manila with stops in Hawaii and Guam. This was in January of 1951. We sailed from San Francisco, but I was too young to remember exactly where. Was it Fort Mason?
My sister and I still have the certificates that we were issued the day we crossed the International Date Line. Everyone wore their clothes backwards. We also remember the frequent Man Overboard drills. And I still think fondly of Captain Bang of the Morton, who would invite children up to the bridge to blow the ship's horn and say hello to our mothers on the public address system.
I just found a wonderful picture of the Morton at:
http://www.Msts-society.com/cg-morton.jpg
We came home in 1952 on a sistership, the USNS General D. E. Aultman (T-AP-156), formerly the USS General D. E. Aultman (AP-156).
As we left Honolulu, heading for home, there was a military band that played, "California, Here I Come."
Would love to hear from other military kids who traveled by MSTS, and from anyone from one of these ships.
