Ken Roberts wrote on 2001-06-21 19:20:29.0
Comments: It seems that David Copperfield has caused the Thomas Jefferson T-APA 30 to disappear from the pages of history. All efforts to locate this ship have failed. Does anyone out there ever remember seeing her or even hearing of her? Trying to locate shipmates. Radiomen: Chief Northrup, Wallen, Barlow, Rosenfield, Martin, Steuben, Rush. I came aboard in 1952 (Jan,Feb?)and was ordered to Mine Force Pacific Fleet in Dec. 1953. I remember a PN (YN?) named Young from Tacoma. Also a Lt. Dagley. Anyone out there seen this ghostship? Contact me at Jimtomi@aol.com

Was a real rough trip to Japan as it took about fifteen days going what crew called the Northern Route. We went over to Inchon, Korea on a small ship also. I would like to hear from anyone who might have sailed on one of these Sgt. Class ships and if anyone has a list of names for them I think I could remember the name if I saw it. Comments: While looking for data on the USNS Hugh J. Gaffey which was as I found out sunk as a target on June 16, 2000 in the Pacific, I found data on virtually every ship that has ever been registered with the U.S. Navy. Here is the website: http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ships/lists/decoms.html
Play with the URL and you will locate all sorts of data relating to decommissioned and active ships. Not all troop carriers were U.S. Navy ships. Some were contracted from civilian sources and some were of foreign flag. Here is a site that will give you some photos of most troop carriers and a little history (renaming, etc):
http://members.nbci.com/yohidevil/SHIPS/mstsship.htm
Enjoy. I'm a Vietnam Veteran and sailed on the Gaffey back from Korea in 1962 and the Darby in 66.

I found a great site that you may wish to pass on. It's the military sea
transportation society and it will bring back many memories to those
who rode a troopship to and from Korea. I know it did for me and I will
never forget the (Buckner) and the (Meigs).

Nothing on the troopships that took part all thru the Korea event?
They were operated by M.S.T.S (Military Sea Transportation Service) and
the Navy is not wild about addmitting that anyone other than they, know
how to operate ships.
When Korea started, the Navey was desperatley short of experienced,
qualified, seagoing types.
They created a seperate operation called Military Sea Transportation
Service and turned all of the troop transports over to them to operate.
M.S.T.S then crewd thjese ships with Merchant Marine officers and seamen
contracted to work by the trip.
The only Navy people on board were the medical staff and a few (about
15, officers and men) to handddle the loading and unloading of the
troops.
The Merchant Marine officers and men worked for the Navy as Civil
Service employees.
The arrangement worked very well, and there was no conflict between the
two services that I am aware of.
For instance When we returned to San Francisco after a trip, I was
releived as Third Officer, and told to report to Treasure Island Damage
Control School. When I did, I and a group of others, both Navy and Civil
Service, were given a crash 12 week course in damage control and
nuclear decontamination procedures. After the course, we returned to our
respective ships) General E.T. Collins for normal duty. After several
more regular runs, SF to Yokahama to Inchon, we were detached from our
regular run and attached to the Atomic Energy Commission and served as a
hotel ship for the personnel on Eniwetok during the first of the H Bomb
test.
As the Korea war startedf to wind down most of the Civil Service people
left the Navy employee and went on to other interests.
