I was 6 years old when I sailed on Her from Fort Mason, San Francisco, 1962 to Yokosuka Japan. Retuned on the USS Sultan.

Comments: I am a rare book dealer and recently acquired a large watercolor painting of the troop transport General M. C. Meigs (AP-116). The painting measures 24 x 36, is well-executed, and is signed by the artist - A. Norgren 45/USCGR. The painting is done in blues and grays. The painting is matted and needs a frame. Please inquire for images and price if interested.
Thank you.

Comments: My family and I came to the states in 1952 (San Francisco) on the David C. Shanks. We are wondering if we could obtain the passenger roster for that year (I think we came around the 1st part of 1952 - I was only 4 years old at that time). Can you help? Perhaps give me a website that I could do a search on?
Any help is greatly appreciated. We met some wonderful people that year and would like to try and track them down.

It was undescribable. After that I served on the USNS Fred C. Ainsworth and finally on the USNS W.H.Gordon before being discharged from the service November 1954. I was a 2nd Class Hospital Corpsman. Comments: As a Marine corporal, I was part of the draft that left Camp Pendleton in Nov 64 on board the Gaffey. Interested in input from anyone who sailed on the Gaffey (Marine or Army) on this date. Departed San Diego on 5 Nov 64. Visited San Diego in 1996 and the pier that we departed from (warehouse next to the pier) looked the same as it did in '64. The Gaffey lasted until June 2000 when she was used as target practice in a Harpoon firing test in the Pacific. Not bad for an "old lady." We had fun on the ship...my guess was about 500-750 Marines and several hundred Army troops headed for Korea. We Marines boarded last and had to wait several hours in the sun, moving our seabags between the edge of the pier and the warehouse, next to the pier. "Someone" got the bright idea to begin singing the Mickey Mouse theme song. The entire draft of Marines could be heard LOUD and CLEAR throughout the downtown area. Whoever was in charge decided to move us aboard quickly...

Comments: I went to Viet Nam on the Hugh J. Gaffey, in September of 1965. My unit, the 71st Artillery (a Hawk Missile outfit), and a complement of Marines that were also on board, may have been the last to travel by ship to Viet Nam. We stopped in Okinawa on the way, and went through a huge typhoon between Okinawa and Qui Nhon, Viet Nam, our ultimate destination. I've tried to find anything on the internet that mentions our trip, but have failed to do so. Funny story about the trip: some of us were playing poker when some merchant marines came into our bay. One of them told us that gambling was not permitted on the ship. I told him that we only took orders from our officers, not from merchant marines, and suggest he ****-off. A short time later, I was called to my battalion commanders cabin, where I was informed that the man I had insulted was the ship's Captain, and that even my battalion CO took orders from him! I spent the rest of the trip on KP, including our trip through the typhoon.

MSTS Morton and Aultman, military dependents |

Muriel Hogan wrote on 2002-05-24 09:05:49.0
Comments: We were USAF dependents who went to the Phillipines on the MSTS ship USAT General C. G. Morton, formerly the USS General C. G. Morton (AP-138). 28 days to Manila with stops in Hawaii and Guam. This was in January of 1951. We sailed from San Francisco, but I was too young to remember exactly where. Was it Fort Mason?
My sister and I still have the certificates that we were issued the day we crossed the International Date Line. Everyone wore their clothes backwards. We also remember the frequent Man Overboard drills. And I still think fondly of Captain Bang of the Morton, who would invite children up to the bridge to blow the ship's horn and say hello to our mothers on the public address system.
I just found a wonderful picture of the Morton at:
http://www.Msts-society.com/cg-morton.jpg
We came home in 1952 on a sistership, the USNS General D. E. Aultman (T-AP-156), formerly the USS General D. E. Aultman (AP-156).
As we left Honolulu, heading for home, there was a military band that played, "California, Here I Come."
Would love to hear from other military kids who traveled by MSTS, and from anyone from one of these ships.

I signed on this tanker in 1967 and shuddled jet fuel between the Gulf and Viet Nam. Have been unable to locate picture under any of her names since built. She was also for aq very short length of time named Seatrain Calif. My home phone is 256-766-0003 or you can email me at YEARGANRL@AOL.COM OR write, Larry Yeargan,1610 Winston St. Florence, Al. 35630. Thank you for any help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I found a great site that you may wish to pass on. It's the military sea
transportation society and it will bring back many memories to those
who rode a troopship to and from Korea. I know it did for me and I will
never forget the (Buckner) and the (Meigs).

Nothing on the troopships that took part all thru the Korea event?
They were operated by M.S.T.S (Military Sea Transportation Service) and
the Navy is not wild about addmitting that anyone other than they, know
how to operate ships.
When Korea started, the Navey was desperatley short of experienced,
qualified, seagoing types.
They created a seperate operation called Military Sea Transportation
Service and turned all of the troop transports over to them to operate.
M.S.T.S then crewd thjese ships with Merchant Marine officers and seamen
contracted to work by the trip.
The only Navy people on board were the medical staff and a few (about
15, officers and men) to handddle the loading and unloading of the
troops.
The Merchant Marine officers and men worked for the Navy as Civil
Service employees.
The arrangement worked very well, and there was no conflict between the
two services that I am aware of.
For instance When we returned to San Francisco after a trip, I was
releived as Third Officer, and told to report to Treasure Island Damage
Control School. When I did, I and a group of others, both Navy and Civil
Service, were given a crash 12 week course in damage control and
nuclear decontamination procedures. After the course, we returned to our
respective ships) General E.T. Collins for normal duty. After several
more regular runs, SF to Yokahama to Inchon, we were detached from our
regular run and attached to the Atomic Energy Commission and served as a
hotel ship for the personnel on Eniwetok during the first of the H Bomb
test.
As the Korea war startedf to wind down most of the Civil Service people
left the Navy employee and went on to other interests.
