Comments: I've read in some accounts that the Gen. C.C. Ballou began carrying troops to Korea in 1952. Not so. My unit, 108th QM Bakery Company, was taken from San Francisco to Pusan by this ship during the period Aug. 14 to Aug 28, 1950. All the signage aboard the boat was in multiple languages as it had been carrying displaced persons in the Atlantic prior to our voyage. Ernie Peterson

New Section

Jon Gateley wrote on 2004-03-25 13:11:52.0

Comments: Down at the very bottom of this list there is a section entitled "New Section" dated 29 Aug 1998 posted by blxJac@aol.com. It has some good information. In it he says "the Navy is not wild about addmitting that anyone other than they, know how to operate ships." I can believe that.

I never served in what I called the "real" Navy other than boot camp. I always had cushy, laid-back, non-militaristic duty but I did serve a year in the Military Department on the USNS BARRETT (T-AP 196). I had occasion to observe our ship's seamanship as well as some seamanship on the part of the "real" Navy on USS ships.

The "real" Navy was very impressive but then our status in those days was only slightly above that of the galley slaves in Ben Hur. You got good at what you were doing "or else" and you didn't really want to know what the "or else" was. I suppose the merchant marine officers were intelligent, capable and well trained (I really don't know for sure) but I had occasion to observe the seamanship of our merchant marine crew under some difficult situations and it seemed rather inept.

Comments: Hello.

I just stumbled across this thread in the website. I boarded the troop ship CG Morton in Seattle on December 31, 1955 and arrived in Inchon about January 20, 1956. John Taggart was aboard and we later ended up in the same unit, Heavy Mortar Company, 21st Infantry Regt., 24th ID in Korea. Been looking for John a long time and have posted in a variety of sites. Also like to hear from anyone else in the same company serving with me.

If so, give me a call or email.

Comments: If anyone has any info on this magnificent ship. I was 6 years old on my first voyage on this ship. My mother and I were on our way to Germany to be with my dad who was stationed there. I remember it like it was yesterday. But what im curious about is,not sure where in NYC we boarded her. I was thinking it was Brooklyn but not sure. This would be in 1964. The ship went to France. Also what im looking for is her retirement? I found a web site tonite with her picture, that really touched my heart. She was truley a beauty, and her staff was very accomidating. If anyone was on that ship that time period, would also love to hear from you. My father was 21 year veteran of the US Army. His pride and joy, and a big part of my life. His retirement was in 1969 out of Fort Niargra NY thank you for your time

Comments: I am a rare book dealer and recently acquired a large watercolor painting of the troop transport General M. C. Meigs (AP-116). The painting measures 24” x 36”, is well-executed, and is signed by the artist - A. Norgren ‘45/USCGR. The painting is done in blues and grays. The painting is matted and needs a frame. Please inquire for images and price if interested.

Thank you.

Comments: My family and I came to the states in 1952 (San Francisco) on the David C. Shanks. We are wondering if we could obtain the passenger roster for that year (I think we came around the 1st part of 1952 - I was only 4 years old at that time). Can you help? Perhaps give me a website that I could do a search on?

Any help is greatly appreciated. We met some wonderful people that year and would like to try and track them down.

Our family name is Togonon. My dad was US Army - Reynaldo Togonon, Msgt.

Comments: In reply to BlxJac@aol.com, I too was assigned duty at the Eniwetok Proving Grounds during the first Hydrogen Bomb test aboard the USNS David C. Shanks (as a hotel ship)in November 1952. It was undescribable. After that I served on the USNS Fred C. Ainsworth and finally on the USNS W.H.Gordon before being discharged from the service November 1954. I was a 2nd Class Hospital Corpsman. On another matter, I have been trying to find an MSTS patch to put on a hat or sweatshirt without success. If anyone out there can help me I would be most appreciative.

I found a great site that you may wish to pass on. It's the military sea
transportation society and it will bring back many memories to those
who rode a troopship to and from Korea. I know it did for me and I will
never forget the (Buckner) and the (Meigs).

Nothing on the troopships that took part all thru the Korea event?

They were operated by M.S.T.S (Military Sea Transportation Service) and
the Navy is not wild about addmitting that anyone other than they, know
how to operate ships.

When Korea started, the Navey was desperatley short of experienced,
qualified, seagoing types.

They created a seperate operation called Military Sea Transportation
Service and turned all of the troop transports over to them to operate.

M.S.T.S then crewd thjese ships with Merchant Marine officers and seamen
contracted to work by the trip.

The only Navy people on board were the medical staff and a few (about
15, officers and men) to handddle the loading and unloading of the
troops.

The Merchant Marine officers and men worked for the Navy as Civil
Service employees.

The arrangement worked very well, and there was no conflict between the
two services that I am aware of.

For instance When we returned to San Francisco after a trip, I was
releived as Third Officer, and told to report to Treasure Island Damage
Control School. When I did, I and a group of others, both Navy and Civil
Service, were given a crash 12 week course in damage control and
nuclear decontamination procedures. After the course, we returned to our
respective ships) General E.T. Collins for normal duty. After several
more regular runs, SF to Yokahama to Inchon, we were detached from our
regular run and attached to the Atomic Energy Commission and served as a
hotel ship for the personnel on Eniwetok during the first of the H Bomb
test.

As the Korea war startedf to wind down most of the Civil Service people
left the Navy employee and went on to other interests.
