USS UPSHUR GERMANY TO NEW YORK EARLY TO MID 1960'S
MARGUERITE WOOD wrote on April 19, 2012

Comments: We left Munich Germany, took the USS Upshur to New
York in the early to mid 1960's. My stepfather was
Army Msgt Thomas E. Meredith.

I am looking for information from that time period in
Germany and on the Munich Germany to New York via USS
Upshur run. And / or from that time period in Germany
from anyone who may have known him or our family.

I don't have all the facts as my Mother passed away
and they are both gone now. She had a picture of me
as a little girl on the USS Upshur on the way home
from Germany.

I want to put in writing what I know or can find out
about our family history, including where we have
been, and what we did. I never got our history, or
stories about their lives, from my parents and I
deeply regret leaving it for too long. I'd like to
leave as much as I can to pass on to my family.

Any information would be appreciated. Thank You

Comments: Kenneth and I were just kids but we spent most of our
time together while on the ship and performed in the
ship's show. For some reason I have never forgotten him
but we did not keep in touch and surprisingly my dad has
no pictures of this time on ship. Kenneth was about 13,
had blond hair and I believe a younger sister.
Don't know if I am on the right site but if anyone can
redirect me to find the ship's passenger list for this
particular trip or information about Kenneth I would
appreciate the help. Thank you

Keywords: My father M/SGT J.R. Russett and I traveled on the USS
General Hodges from NY to Panama in 1949 and Panama to
New York in 1950. On the latter trip back to New York
I made a friend Kenneth Ferguson who I am trying to
locate, just to touch base after all these years. His
father was Navy and I believe they went from New York
to Maryland after we docked.

There were oilers also such as the USS Aucilla AO 56 that delivered oil to many ports of the world and supplied the fleet in Korea by transporting oil fromt he Persian Gulf to Japan and the fleet. It was a ship that never stopped. I was proud to be part of her crew. She returned to the fleet in 1951 after years of service to MSTS.

I believe his rank at that time was CWO3. Was wondering if anyone might have been on the ship at that time and might have known him. He retired in 1956 from Camp LeJuene.

Just as a side note, my husband and I were stationed in Korea in 76-79 and my father came to visit and was honored by the Korean Veterans (a general) with medals and gifts. You would have thought he won the war by himself.

Comments: AP-114. General William Mitchell. I am looking for the ships logbook. I am particularly interested in the time period January 1, 1949, to December 31, 1954. My now deceased brother in law was a USMC who was stationed on Guam when the Korean War began. June 25, 1950.

He had come to Guam by ship from San Francisco. He was then transported by ship to South Korea. Wounded, he was later returned to the US via ship.

I know one of those trips was made on the USS General William Mitchell. My surviving sister and his surviving children would like to know this information. Can anyone direct me to a site where I could find the ships record of movement? Thank You. Don White, Jacksonville, FL

Comments: I sailed aboard the Funston in late 1946 on her first voyage transporting dependents to Korea. The ship broke down almost immediately on departure and was towed back into Seattle. We broke down again near Japan but were able to limp into port in Inchon. The captain died on the voyage and was stored in the deep freeze. All in all, quite an adventure for an eight year old boy. I'm trying to lock down the exact dates of departure from Seattle and arrival in Inchon.

Comments: My Mom, Dad and Brother were transported from Germany on the Gen. Stewart to New York, arriving Dec. 13 1949. Can anyone corroborate the location of the General Stewart? There's a gap in the history of this ship from mid 1949-1950.

My Dad is 87 now and will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of my family to the US as displaced persons. we'd like to prepare a history to pass on to the younger generation of my family.

Thank you.
