SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN

Comments: I served from 53 to 56 on fourty and fifty footers. The fourty footers were used with sweep wire and depressers and a float called the "Pig" I was on the fourty footers # 16 and # 17. I was part of the crew that won the Navy E in our unit.

We would load out crafts and work sheds aboard LSD's and then go to the Korean War zone and sweep for mines. We changed ships [LSD's] about once a month or sometime every two months.

My first duty station was Adak, Alaska stright from boot camp [ San Diago ] and I was as far south as Borneo and several points in between

Comments: I was attached to the Electric Shop of MD 111
in 55-56.Would like to hear from shipmates who
were in Mine Div 111 at this time. I have some
photos of the base, MSL's, in Sasebo and on sweeping
operations in Chin-He Korea. Also, Plank owner
on USS Exploit MSO440, Served on USS Rival MSO468.
Served as XO Minecraft Support Unit Charleston.
I retired in 1973.

Comments: befor it became mine div. 111, it was msb div. 1. some where around the end of the war we were told to paint over the msb on our boats and replace it with mine div. and the boat number. i was on the 15 boat which was a 40'motor launch. we had three or four launch's and five or six lcvp's. i also was in mine div. 112.

Minesweepers for sweeping Habors and Coast lines in Korea War. The Unit was still sweeping old Mine Field in 1955. Mine Division 112 and 113 were based in Long Beach, Ca
