Comments: My father Hal T. Frank was a medic in the X Corps. He described a mortar attack between Hungnam and Hamhung. I believe he also landed at Inchon. His hometown was Poland, Maine and he had served several years with the army of occupation in Germany before a Truman year sent him to Korea. He returned home in 1952 on the SS Midway. I'd like to hear from anyone who knew or served with him.
Thank you.

MY GRANDFATHER...MY HERO
LEIF EMMINGER wrote on November 12, 2002

City and State: PHOENIX AZ

Unit: SSB1 C CO.

Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER

Comments: Veterans day 2002 is comming to a close and I find myself missing the greatest man in my life, my hero, my grandfather. He never talked about the wars that he served in (whenever I asked he would just say he served with heros).

For a time he raised me when I was a kid, and was always enjoying every second of life. He was a man of integrity, a man of honor, and I have done my best to follow in his footsteps.

I know that he was a medic in the Army. Serving in the ETO during WWII, and in Korea. His death was a great loss for me. He had called me as I was leaving for the Persian Gulf War as a Navy Hospital Corpsman assigned to the Marine Corps. I was on my way to a meeting with my Capt. and was unable to talk to him. He passed away two weeks later. I never had a chance to say goodbye and to tell him that I loved him. So, I guess this is my way of saying it.

Now, as I prepare to defend my country again against terrorism, I wanted to tell him that, I love him and I understand. I can never say that I have made the same sacrifces that he had but, after the Gulf War and Somalia... I can truly say that I understand his love, his dedication, his commitment to his country and to his family.
I will always do my best to follow in his footsteps.

I wish that could only know what units he was assigned to during the two wars. So, I ask anyone who knew Glenn Mcdonald Hicks from Tennessee to please let me know what you remember about him.

To all Veterans out there that may read this...thank you for your courage and love for this country and for the love you have shared to your families. They may never fully understand the brevety of your sacrifices but, they will always live free and know your love for them.

FRIENDS OF CAPT. GLENN GOODWIN, DDS
BILL GOODWIN wrote on June 2, 2001

City and State: TX

Unit:

Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER

Comments: My dad, Captain Walter Glenn Goodwin, Jr., DDS, served in a MASH unit in Korea sometime around 1951-53. He was an Oral Surgeon.

He died in 1971. In retrospect, I believe he was, in a roundabout way, a belated casualty of that horrible war. We now know that many who survive war carry deep psychological wounds from their experiences.

I was instilled as a child in his beliefs in Duty, Honor, Country.

At the time of my father's death, I was a senior in high school. I lacked any perspective on the depths of his pain until it was too late to share his load.

Though his parting advice to me regarding possible military service was to join any branch BUT the Army, I am a Vietnam-era paratrooper vet, choosing to serve in what was already an unpopular occupation.

If anyone knew my dad in Korea, please drop me a note. I do not even know what MASH unit he served in, but I feel a need to learn as much as is possible about his circumstances, friends, and the like, from that terrible time.

Thank you!

Bill Goodwin

When I was growing up, he refused to tell me anything specific about his experiences, so this is the only info I have.
