Comments: I have pictures that my husbands grandfather took while he was in Korea. One of them is of the AE Yuk Orphanage at the Koje-Do prison. The name he had written on the back of the photo was Chief Kim Sam Kim. I am interested in any information about the pictures or of anyone who may have know his grandfather. His name was Vernon Wheeler.

Keywords: The army Transportation Corps also had personnel on Koje-do.The ship from Pusan was a Transportation corps ship, the harbor was run by them and they provided an LCM from the main camp to two smaller islands (yoncho=do? and ??? ) and ended at the pow camp on the far side of Koje-do. This was a daily mail, ration, and pow transport (for medical needs beyond our capability) run. One of the things that I remember is the tear gas that drifted over to the messhall during the lunch hour. Maybe the pows knew that we would also be gassed.

Comments: I am the current commander of the 142nd MP CO (and Yongsan Provost Marshal) stationed in Seoul. I've been searching for photographs or items from the 142nd's history but have found little other than our campaign credit and a few references for Koje-do. I am hoping that someone may have photographs they would be willing to scan for us (any period) or other historical information. I would like to start documenting our history.

Thanks.

It was attached to HQ and HQ Detachment, MP Group 8137th Army Unit, an organization that administered the POW Camp at Koje-Do Island, South of Pusan, Korea. There the 165th was assigned the task of both collecting prisoners of war (POW's) from front-line units and guarding and escorting them to the Koje - Do Island POW Compound. On 16 October 1952, the 165th was reassigned to the Korean Communication Zone and relocated to Mosulpo, Korea, another prisoner of war (POW) facility on the island of Cheju, Korea. There the 165th was re-designated as the 165th MP Company (Escort Guard), but continued the mission of guarding prisoners. The Company remained at Mosulpo until after the cease-fire, when it was transferred into the Prisoner Of War (POW) Command. The POW Command took over the control and repatriation of prisoners of war (POW's) and refugees. The 165th MP Company (Escort Guard) was inactivated in Korea on 25 April 1954.

Comments: I have written before asking for information about the Koje-do POW riots and I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome to this web-site. My focus is on a group of men sent into the POW camp during the uprising. From what I understand this group was comprised mostly of ex-convicts. (My Dad was not an ex-convict) I'm not sure exactly when they were sent into the (POW) camp. My Mom was sure it was prior to Gen. Dodd being released. She thought this group of men played a role in his (Dodd's) release. However, the info I have read says no units were sent into the prison to assist Dodd. It further said the first group of men sent into the POW Camp were to "relocate" the POW's into their new compound (after Dodd's release). I'm hoping to connect with someone who was at Koje-do during this time. My Dad's name was George Ernest Wells. Company C, 5th RCT, 8th Army. His tour of duty was from 8/5/51 to 8/16/52. I have given a better discription of him in a previous entry. My Mom said that a man Dad served with had a saying, "When I die I'm going to heaven for lunch, If I don't see your smiling faces...I'm going to hell and join the bunch." I hoping this will jog some memories. I want to thank all who have taken the time to responde to my entries. I am still very hopeful that I will make contact with someone who actually knew my Dad. Thank you all! Norma

Comments: Hi, I'm looking for lost relatives and was hoping someone might recognize and put a name to who I'm describing:

White male, approximately 32 years of age died in 1952. He was a veteran and a pilot. He died in an accident. I do not know if he was serving during the accident. He could have been a WW2 vet, and been a pilot in commercial aviation, or he could have been a Korean War soldier and died in a plane crash or even an auto accident.

If you knew him, you would also know that he was Croatian, probably with a Croatian surname, and that he was survived by four daughters born in 1945, 1948, 1949 and 1951 and his wife, born in 1920. He resided in the midwest, probably the Chicago area.

If you have any ideas on how I can put a name to this person or his family, feel free to write, and thanks.

Unfortunately my father's military records in St. Louis, Mo were destroyed in the 1973 fire. We are attempting to obtain records of an incident that occurred while my father was stationed in Korea. The incident occurred between 1952 to 1953, and involved a truck that had just been stocked with amunition, and the truck caught on fire. If anyone knows where this information is filed/kept or has knowledge of this incident, please contact me. Thank you.

Comments: The 60th Gen Depot Started on Guam, went to Japan in Sept 1950, Then went to Korea when MacArthur landed at Inchon. Flew into Kimpo when it was taken. Went all the way to Pyong-Yang and back to Kaesong and Pusan when Chinese pushed us back. Went to Koje-do Island To set up the POW camp. Later I transfered to the 7th Div. I was rotated home in Oct 1951. I'm looking for members interested in a Reunion.

Comments: I am now looking for the Army physician or surgeon who cared the POW in the Koje-do POW camp(POW from North Korea or army of North side). I recenlty got the database of the cause of death in the POW camp in Koje-do released by USA government. There was a good record of cause of death(death certificate) written by UN army physician. I would like to listen the health status of the POW camp. The data told me tht the major cause of death in the POW camp is Tuberculosis, diarrhea. Any comments will be helpful for me to analyze the data.

Kojedo Prison Unit

Dear Ted,

I really do appreciate your answer to my query about the Chinese POW
riots.

My question, Is it possible for me to contact any of those people you
know who were stationed at the prisons. An e-mail or snail mail address,
doesn't matter. I don't expect anyone to write an essay about what
happened, though I would gladly accept it.

Maybe someone would have an old newspaper or magazine clipping that
would give a good description of the riots. Needless to say I would
certainly be glad to get a copy of whatever there is.

My brother's name was Robert E. Robinson. He was about
28 or 29 years old at the time. He held the rank of Tech Sergeant I
believe, 3 chevrons top and 2 on bottom.

I knew of the riots only from his letters. I was never able to talk
to him in person since he was killed in an automobile accident shortly
after he arrived back in the states. His two sons were very small when
he died.

My brother's widow is now deceased. Each of his sons are fully grown,
married and have children. I tell my nephews the horrible stories that
he wrote to me.

To them the stories sound fictitious. That is why I am asking for help
to prove those events really did happen. Thank you very much,

Sincerely,

Lester Robinson

comments: Kojedo Prison query, RE: SFC Robert E. Robinson

I was recently given a letter with new information about my brother
SFC Robert E. Robinson. In this letter he informs his brothers and
sisters that he now has a new address which is now, SFC Robert E.
Robinson, 9th MP Service Co., APO 59, c/o PM, San Francisco, CA.

In a letter dated 22 Feb 1952 he states that he is now in PUSAN and on
his way to the 9th MP SV Co on Koje DO (sp).

In another letter dated 10 June 1953 he writes "I received my assignment
to Camp Drake in Japan today where I will be assigned to another unit."

8070 MPEG was made up primarily of Sugamo Prison & 8th. Army Stockade
personnel.stationed in Japan and sent to Korea Aug. 1950 to open the
first POW Camps in Pusan & surveyed & opened Koje Do POW camps later.

The 60th Gen. Hospital(POW) was located at the Pusan camps. Camps
actually in Tong Nae beyond Hialiah Circle on the road to Taegu on the
right back of a large silk mill where the troops bathed in the big silk
vats of hot water.

Koje Do was a WW2 japanese mini submarine base at the
opposite end of the island. Koreans used to dive for sponges off the
high cliffs.

It was made up of MP's from the 8th. Army Stockade and Sugamo prison
units in Japan Parts of the 8070 sent to Koje-Do were redesignated as
the 8220th. MPEG which was part of the 94th. MP Battalion. The overall
command of Koje-Do was the 60th. general depot. As the seriously
sick/wounded interrogator of all POW's I was well aware of the
machinations leading up to the POW riots.
