CAMP MCINTYRE 1968-1969 |
| JAMES BONEY SR. wrote on October 17, 2010 City and State: EGG HARBOR TWP NJ Unit: 1ST BN 17 FA REGIMENT HHB Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I was stationed at Camp Mcintyre 1968-69 with the 1/17 FA Headquarters Battery Artillery Survey Platoon "The eyes of the Artillery". Good friends with Charles p. Jones, Fred Engelmann, Tom LaPointe, Dominick Danzo. I was lead guitar/singer in a rock band called "Pygmy and the Headhunters". Steve Davies on Bass, Fred on guitar and Bruce Strickland on drums. We always said we would have a reunion and never have. We were on full alert quite often that summer due to the infiltration going on from the north. It rained the whole month of July during these alerts so we had LP'S out 24 hrs a day. We were wet all the time - even our laundry came back wet. The big event was when some GI was topping off his duece and a half at the POL and he lit a match to see if it was full and caught the overflow on fire. The truck went up along with the load of 8" projectiles it had on board. Camp McIntyre is just over the ridge from where it happened. We thought we were being attacked since the DMZ was only about 1 K away. It was quite a night in the bunkers while the whole sky was on fire over the ridge and the explosions kept going off. Most of us were either in our underwear or 'Class A's' coming back to camp when we scrambled for weapons and gear to man the bunkers and foxholes. We found out what had really happened at around 3 am. I hear the guy is still paying for the truck and the rest of the loss, LOL. I would love to hear from anyone from the unit.
