Comments: I served as a member of JSF Co., 1st and 3rd Platoons from December 1983 to December 1984. I remember the 23 November 1984 defector incident; KPA trucks rolling on the MSR and dumping rice and supplies near the QRF patrol base; and patrol, ambush, and recon missions.
Keywords: The Infantry assigned to Joint Security Force (JSF) Co., Camp KittyHawk served for ONE YEAR on the DMZ. Once there, we stayed for the entire tour. All Infantry and "Combat Arms" MOS's were posted for ONE YEAR on the DMZ.
The exception to this fact was "Warrior Base" used by 2nd INF. DIV. units from TDC. These Units did the 90 days on the DMZ.

Comments: I was with the 11th Marines From Jan 53 till the war ended- The day after the truce, I was put to work tearing down bunkers and helping lay the yellow marking tape for the 38th paralell- Two weeks later, the 1st Marine Div. put togeather a unit called "the 1st DMZ police force" made up of guys frome all four regts.(1st,5th,7th and 11th) and we patroled our section of the DMZ.It was a company strenth unit (about 100 guys) We carried 45s but didn't have ammo. My squad was sent to Pan mun jon for the prisoner exchange-We were there for 8 days and assigned to a Greek unit that was a netural nation and was in charge of the camp that held the north koreans and some chinese. I was there during the exchange of prisoners, than sent back to the 1st DMZ Police till I was brought back to the states and discharged-There was a 2 page article about this in the stars and stripes

Comments: The JSA unit's first commander, Colonel Robert L. Huffaker, died October 3, 2008 at his Bella Vista, Arkansas home. He was 93 years old. Huffaker joined the US Army in 1942 and retired in 1968. During 1952-53 LTC Huffaker was the commander of the newly formed Joint Security Area unit, and participated in the Korean armistice meetings, Operation Little Switch and Operation Big Switch at the truce village of Panmunjom. He provided the early Panmunjom photographs shown at the 2007 JSA reunion in Las Vegas.

Comments: I was stationed with Ron Abigill at JSA from 1967-1968. Although in a different section (escort) I was aware of the incident involving one of our relief trucks (a Dodge 4x4) carrying some 9-10 personell. Some were U.S., and some were KATUSA. The truck was ambused well with our side of the DMV with what apeared to be RPG's, and grenades. Then, the NKA sprayed the truck with AK 47 fire. To the best of my knowledge about this incident, only two US, and one KATUSA survived. This issue was kept very quiet, and did not even appear in "Stars & Stripes.", nor any major US newspaper. I checked. SSG C.L. Ford.

Comments: I am making plans for the fourth JSA/Panmunjom Veterans Reunion to be held in spring 2011 in Orlando, Florida. I am choosing Orlando for same reasons I chose Las Vegas for 2007 reunion - abundance of hotel rooms, economical and easy airline fights from most other parts of country, and good weather. I have some ideas for speakers and activities. Marsha will lead another excursion to local shopping mall for the "In Front of the Mall" JSA ladies. Soju will be available in the hospitality room!

Comments: JSA was my first duty station when I left OSUT at Benning. I served 1980-81 with 2nd plt. Maddogs. I went to Korea a private and left a SP4. Also attended PNCOC CA at Story Barracks. I highly enjoyed the duty and going down range was something else! When the JSA got 4 plts. in 81 I went to the 4th plt. Forgot the PSG name but my sqd ldr was Sgt Savusa.

Comments: I enjoy reading here about JSA from different timeline perspectives. I was there 1965 - 1966 when we simply called it JSA. Later it became Camp Kitty Hawk, etc. Also, were GIs still living in quanset Huts with the old potbelly stoves? What about the mosquito tents? Anybody remember Ko-U-H; the barber; the old movie theater; hobby shop? Guess all those places are gone now. Can someone post the JSA timeline from a true veterans perspective? I was really proud to wear the JSA emblem.

Comments: At the time, i thought it was the worst place to be in the world, I hated Korea. Now, years later, I realize it was really the best time of my life. Sonjuree, yonjego, Itaewon.... a lot of wild stories to tell, some pretty unbelievable to someone who never experience Korea at JSA. I was there during the transition from Camp Kitty Hawk to Camp Bonifas. I was there when the new, modern Check point 4 was built. (old now to those serving). A gigantic tent was constructed that covered the construction of the building... it was really neat. flipping of N. Korean guards.... especially "smiley" anyone remember him? he spoke better English than the katrusa's, and he was KPA. Always smiling real big and trying to get everyone to talk to him.
I remember Der Schwantz.... Kreckler... How are ya man? You crazy German.... lol.... get in touch if you read this. :) Called Defranco one Veterans day, a few years back.
Anyway, i was at the JSA May '86-APR '87. So much PU$$EE. Korea was a crazy place! I always wondered how it might have been, if i married that girl in YonGIgo. Never sure if it was a mistake not to marry her. She was a pretty thing.
Oh well, just reminicing here about Korea, would be fun to visit the place once more. NK is still as crazy as it was in '86.... It just get's more notice now... but nothing new really. Remember the propoganda leaflets, and the 24hr. broadcasting...... And us playing 24 hr. Heavy Metal for the KPA. I wonder if they enjoyed it?

Comments: The April 2009 JSA veterans 10-day tour to Korea was a great success. I can not thank enough JSA veteran Raymond Jones (69-70) of Winslow, Maine for organizing this top notch tour of the Republic of Korea. Wow! has it changed from when I was there in the early 1970's. The only disappointment was the current JSA command organized tour to Panmunjom. which did not include a stop at the DMZ site of the Easter Sunday 1968 ambush of a JSA truck by North Korean infiltrators that resulted in the deaths of four American and Korean JSA enlisted soldiers. Our tour group was there on the 41st anniversary of this incident, and it would have been very appropriate for the command to have allowed our tour to honor the deaths of these four enlisted soldiers who died on a dark and lonely road in the DMZ so many years ago. We just drove past the site in a bus without stopping. Instead, the current JSA command took our group to the site of the August 1976 axe murders incident where two JSA officers were killed by North Korean guards for a short memorial. Among JSA American and Korean veterans, the deaths of JSA enlisted soldiers are JUST AS IMPORTANT as officer deaths. However, it is my opinion that the current JSA command does not share this view.

Comments: Next month (April 2009) 10 American JSA veterans will be returning to Korea for a 10-day tour of the country and the first international JSA reunion, which is being organized by Raymond Jones of Winslow, Maine. The group consists of veterans who served in this elite unit during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's decades. Their tour will includes visits to the capital of Seoul and a number of historic sites along the DMZ, including the Iron Triangle, a North Korea DMZ invasion tunnel, and a VIP tour of the international truce village of Panmunjom. The international reunion will reunite them with KATUSA and ROK veterans who also serve in this unit. This unit will always be "In Front of Them All."

My father lost his battle with pancriatic cancer earlier this year and I'm looking for stories, photos, anything anyone would be willing to share. I grew up looking at photos of and plaques from "his guys" as he affectionately called them, you Merry Mad Monks!... but my sisters and I did not receive any of his memorabelia from those years. I'm hoping to recoup memories I can share with his grandchildren. Anything anyone can provide would be wonderful! Thank you, and God Bless.

Whatever happened to Knapp? I'm still playing Battletech. Bastard got me hooked on games like that. And Doogie.... Damn that cheap champagne at the Dragon club. SFC.Casse - Hope your still ridding, Hawg SSG. Bugsby - Last I heard was working private security. Bisner - I hope my "twin" is doing well. Hirschi - You still owe me 100 bucks, but I'll let you get off with buying me a beer. Padgett, Kieffer, Garrett, O'Brien, Vanderpool, Foster, and the rest of you guys: I hope your all doing well.
I miss all the runs down to Seoul. Staying at the Dragon Hill, drinking till you cant stand at ms. Polly's, picking up chicks at the MTV Club, and hiding from the MPs.

Comments: While setting up groups on Linkedin (profession network) I was looking for the unit ribbon or badge we wore while being "IN FRONT OF THEM ALL" and found this website.
Darn, I tried back in 1993, 94, 95 and 96 to set up the US side of the Former JSA members, yet somehow got busy again and decided not too.
Sorry to hear we finally left Pan Mum Jom in 2004, but we knew back in 1990 it was going to happen within 10 years.
I served as the NCOIC of S1 (PAC), Asst Adjutant, and for a month and a week Adjutant of UNCSF-JSA. I was also the PAO, Tour OIC, Safety OIC, and anything else the former Asst Adjutant was assigned but left to CPT Lisi.
And lastly, I saw within the DA Pam on service awards before I retired (1991) that we won the Superior Unit Award. As I won the 1991 People to People Award myself (they state I wrote the award up, they just put it in).

What a homecoming present! God bless all who have served in the JSA! Pray for our kids who are in the 'sandbox' right now!

"House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals, "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Revival, and a fall 1973 college football game between UCLA and the University of Nebraska, which ended in a 21-21 tie, are a few broadcasts that I vividly remember. Comments: Attended the 2007 reunion in Las Vegas with my wonderful Wife, who I consider as also serving at the JSA (She did it Stateside while I did it in Korea). The guest speakers were iceing on a function that could not have been better. Jim Mazour and his beautiful Wife deserve tremendous credit for setting it all up. I was the Platoon SGT of the Crew on duty when the Pueblo was released and getting to meet F. Carl Schumacher was a special privilege. The same with LTC Anastasia and Mr. Tchue. I spent 22 years in the Army, the last 12 as a CID Agent, and the 13 months at JSA was the most memorable of my whole career. It was even fun crossing the one lane bridge over the river, the dirt road, moose night, etc. Your a great bunch of people who should be very pround.

White decided to defect to North Korea, I have always been interested to see if I could find anything in print that was related to the story. I have done several internet searches over the past few years and have come up with next to no information at all about the incident. Recently, I tried a "GOOGLE" search and came up with a couple of positive hits. If there's anyone out there interested in White's defection to North Korea, Google Search the following: "Joseph White's Walk In The Dark". IN FRONT OF THEM ALL

Remember the ladies that ran the barber shop, going to sleep with the sound of propaganda sounding almost 24 hours a day every day, the trip up to the QRF site and on to the JSA itself, etc. I remember that just before I got there a KATUSA was killed in a training accident, the first issue of BDU's in Korea, the accident in the dmz when the jeep rear-ended the duce & 1/2, and all that preparation for Pres. Reagan to visit in the fall of 83. It was the only tour I had that felt like a real job - that mattered. everywhere else was just practice.

It is very clear that we will never get anything until we band together to get what we justly deserve. As indivuals we hit a wall fighting a system that wants to forget about us! We have all got the same answers about our records or we are not a big enough burden to Society. we are being judged by people who do not understand the unique situation we were in. They tell us thirty years after the fact that we were exposed to Agent orange then say we weren't. one docter says you have PTSD the other says you do not. Comments: I just found this site, glad I did, sure brings back alot of memories. Even after 19 years in the Army and all the units I have been in, the JSA was one of the best. I served at Camp Bonifas from March 1990 through the end of April of 1992. I was in 2nd PLT and then became a tour guide. I remember most everyone who was there at that time, especially, Layton, Traylor, Mawby, Hadden, Sowers, Vanderpool, Padgett, Garrett, O'Brien, Brown, Lee Soo Young, Collins, Fields, Choi, Hazelwood, the guys in the C&E shop and too many more to list. I am still in the Army at present. Anyone who would like to walk down memory lane drop me a line and we can chat about Itaewon, Sonjuri, Thunder Runs, The dancing girls at the Sanctuary on Tuesday nights, DMZ patrols in sub zero temperatures, life at BRF and the QRF buildings, The ride on the "Seoul Train" from Munsan to Seoul, nights at the Dragon Hill, MTV Club, East-West Club, King Club, Nashville Club, Twilight Zone, The Heavy Metal Club, The Paradise Club in Sonjuri, trying to catch the bus back across Freedom Bridge before it closed for the night, and rationed orange juice in the chow hall. If you were in the JSA at any time, you will never forget it. It was one of the best and most rewarding assignments in the Army. Few had to endure what we did living at Camp Bonifas, but the friendships and the things we learned there will forever be etched in our minds. "In front of them all" then, now, and forever.

Comments: This assignment was the greatest assignment in my over twenty years of service. There were many events that occured during this time but one of the most significant to me was that of a Private who had defected from the Czech contingency and left for the U.S. He had been put on clean-up detail at the NNSC Building which was along the row and left unattended by his Czech captain, CPT Lubomir Kopaj. The private simply walked out of the building on our side and continued walking past check points until finally stopped and asked in broken Russian by one of the Security Platoon members what the guy was up to. The private wanted to go to Ohio where he had relatives living. After being questioned at the Monestary "O Club) he was taken to Seoul. I never knew if he actually made it to Ohio but would like to think that he did.

Disturbing Information |
 |
 |
William Schweizer wrote on 2007-03-31 13:47:07.0
Comments: I came across a disturbing article this morning (31 March 2007)on the Comcast Home Page News headlines. The article was in regards to the cover-up of the death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan in April 2004. It was an AP article and was written by SCOTT LAIDLAW, titled "GENERAL TRIED TO WARN BUSH ABOUT TILLMAN". To paraphrase the article, General Mchrystal sent a memo to General Abizaid stating the following: "I felt that it was essential that you received this information as soon as we detected it in order to preclude any unknowing statements by our country's leaders which might cause public embarassment if the circumstances of Cpl. Tillman's death become public", that is LTG McChrystal's own words from this article. The article goes on to say that LTG McChrystal is the highest ranking officer accused of wrong doing in the Tillman death cover-up. I would like to state that when I arrived at JSA in January 1982 LTG McChrystal (then Captain McChrystal) was the JSA Operations Officer (S-3) at that time. I would also like to go on record and state that LTG McChrystal (CPT McChrystal) was one of the finest officers I ever had the privelege to work for. As far as I'm concerned, LTG McChrystal's word is as good as gold. If The General said he tried to warn his superiors about the true facts of Pat Tillman's tragic death as possibly the result of a friendly fire incident, then that is exactly what he did. I believe LTG McChrystal, and I have absolute faith in the man. I only wish some of the other officers I served with had the same fortitude and integrity that LTG McChrystal (CPT McChrystal) exemplified. I'm a nobody in this world, but it pains me greatly to hear of a man I have the highest regard for being, as far as I'm concerned, falsely accused of wrong doing and trying to cover up the circumstances of Pat Tillman's death. I wish nothing but the best for LTG Mchrystal and he will always have my highest respect and all the support that I can give the man. "IN FRONT OF THEM ALL"

Comments: I WAS STATIONED AT the Joint Security Area from Aug. 1965 to Dec. 1966. in Military Police Squad two. I was. mostly, stationed at checkpoint one with my KATUSA friend Choi. As the years have progressed I have found that my memories of JSA have become sharper rather than fading away. Have heard from Bob Graves and Bob Dunkin. Would love to attend a reunion of you guys if we all could swing it. Thanks. John Ventantonio

Now with the Nuke Test.
I heard the people are the ones that don't have nothing - the high rise apartments don't have proper plumbing and they still have to put up with this short fat doughboy.
What a waste of life. Its seems like any one who makes a statue's of himself has a problem. I think a good Sniper would put a end to this doughboy?

Comments: This message is to George Fry in reference to his message where he mentioned the name Gene Tegeder. I am not for sure if you are referring to the Gene Tegeder from Cincinnati, Oh. or not, but that Gene is my father in-law and he did serve in Korea and he is a great guy just like you mentioned in your comment so I figure that we might be talking about the same person. I just thought I'd let you know that Gene passed away on Easter Sunday of 2004 and was laid to rest in Montgomery, Oh. He truly was a great guy and it was an honor to have known him. I also want to think any and all veterans who read this for serving this great nation and keeping it save. God bless all of you!!!

I'm looking to reconnect with any of the fellows from the C&E section (Beal, Kelley, O'Brien, Daniels, Henry, Hemmen,Swearingen, etc) and any of the "bruthas" (Wallace, Carter, Cade, Garcia, Wiltz, Currin, Ingram, Lett, Jenkins, etc). Plus, any of the guys who remember our leaders of the time (Col Buckley, LTC Turner, CSM Alvarez, CPT Pestona, 1LT Turner, 1SG Carr, SFC Doyle, CPT Bouie, etc).
Remember the orange juice ration enforced by the mess hall? Recall the 10-15 miles road marches or 5 mile runs under LTC Turner? Remember...remember...remember..

Comments: I was stationed to 1st platoon in January of '88. It was a very "unique" experience. I don't have much cause to go back and revisit my life there at JSA often. But I am trying to fill some gaps of information about things there: 1) The ROK soldier who was on guard in CP 1 the night he decided to commit suicide. Whatever happened with that whole story? 2) I came across an article in People Magazine in 1993 or 1994 about Staff Sgt. Barnett, who was temporarily in 1st Platoon in '88. By the mid 90s he was being court-martialed at Fort Bragg for the shooting death of a female officer. What was the verdict? and #3) Sgt David E. Geary was a squad leader in 1st Platoon in '88. In 93 or 94 I saw him shown on "NBC Dateline" during a news item on cops being arrested for police brutality across the country. He and his partner beat an unarmed black suspect to death, I think. Hope all you remaining Animals are staying out of trouble.

Comments: Hi Jack! I served in Korea during 1963-64 with the 2nd Batallion/5th Cavalry at Camp Lawton. I didn't serve at Camp Custer but rather at Camp Lawton (About 1 1/2 miles below Freedom Bridge just before Camp McKenzie). I sure can share memories of Yonjugol with you. The legendary Turkey Farm, Niagara Club, Seven Up Club, the infamous "Jo Mama San's Alley" and all the rest. Talk about an open town, Wow! I'm sure it's a lot different today but I remember the natives, and us too, relieving ourselves in the ditches along the edge of the main drag; rats running across the rooftops while we engaged in "cultural exchanges" with local females; sleeping on the floors of hooches that were heated from underneath on cold nights and waking up with your back burning, hiding in the court yards behind giant Kimchee pots when the MPs pulled after midnight curfew checks on Saturday nights; remaining ever vigilant so the local Slicky contingent didn't get close enough to snatch our cameras and other personal items; drinking OB and Makli (sic) and eating Yakamandus from the China Food Shop by the dozen; and riding the military buses and "Kimchi Cabs" that ran between "Last Chance" and Yonjugol. Those were the days my friend,I thought they'd never end. I haven't been back in all these years but it's been on my mind a lot lately. I'll be 61 in October and I'd like to go back while I'm still able to get around. I'd like to tour the country, Seoul and below, where I never had the chance to go. I'd also like to make a day out of Panmunjom and another day seeing if I could gain admittance to my old Camp to look around and also to make a return trip to Yonjugol. I'd like to see what good, if any, my presence there did. I can picture walking down the streets of Yonjugol with my wife and having some toothless Mama-San yelling "Ya! Ya! I lemember you. I catchie you one short time, 1964. You no pay. Kajiwa me $5 Dorrals--Shungonmah Sykkia". I heard a while back that they were considering pulling all our guys out of the old areas and moving them all South of Seoul. Have you heard that and, if so, how far along is the project. I always thought it was supposed to be our presence that stopped the Red Star boys from attacking. If we're all stationed below Seoul I don't see why we don't fold up the tent and get our 35,000 guys out of there. Sure hope we still have Camp Lawton when I get there. Enjoyed reading your message. Peace be unto you, and take care!!

Comments: I was in Korea from Sept 66 - Feb 68, and I will never forget the experiences and the friends that I served with. During that time the North Koreans must have killed at least a dozen US Army personnel. They sent a 21 commando team across the DMZ and Imjin River with a plan to go to Seoul and attempt to assassinate the South Korean president.
Failing to accomplish that, they retreated back towards the North. Enroot most of this team were killed by either the US army or by ROKA. Shortly after this the USS Pueblo was captured, and I was having some serious doubts about going home. Since all of the occured while I was approaching my ETS and I didn't plan on remaining in the Army any longer than necessary.
My total time served in the Army was 1 year 9 months and 21 days. It seemed like a lifetime then. Thirteen years later I joined the WA Air National Guard where I remained until I retired after 20 years with them.
I have been back to Korea 5 times since and the change in the country is amazing. My last visit was in Oct 2002. With modern freeways and extremely heavy traffic it reminded me of L.A. There was one very noticeable exception and that was the concrete bunkers that infrequently dot the hills along the freeways. These are not relics. They are part of a plan to deal with unwanted guests.
The war isn't over there it's just been put on hold for the past 52 years. One more item... the war museum in Seoul is HUGE! I spent 3 1/2 hours and had to nearly jog to get to the end so that I wouldn't miss my bus. If you have the time, it's a worth while point of interest.
Admission to the museum is free with military ID.
I would love to hear from anyone that remembers Camp Custer and some of the local attractions in Yonjugol.

Comments: what a trip that place was, I was there, when they were involuntarily extending people, and everyone was, talkin' about the new list coming out. is my name on it? yeah, I heard your name was on it...fuck...can't do that much more time here. of course, now that we all look back on it, don't lie, but it was fun, we had the time of our life there, wouldn't trade it for the world. I know I loved it there. I think about the time that I had there all the time, and how I probably will never experience that again. I loved the JSA, and that one Korean waitress...what was her name? she was soooo Beautiful.

Comments: Hello brothers! I'm now working in Iraq and am getting sentimental. would dig some photos of the old times. anybody that was there from 84 to 86; if you could help with some pics it would be great. Art reid are you still alive? P.s. the news your getting about this war is b.s. Ya, folks are dying but the Iraqi people even though they're getting blown up everyday are still standing in line to join the police and army. That's the real story. God bless them they've got balls. and so do our boys, too.

Comments: Seeking anyone who recalls or has any information about a 29 August 1967 attack on JSA's Camp Kitty Hawk by North Korean infiltrators. According to what little information I have found on the Internet, the North Koreans slipped through the DMZ and established a machine gun position on a nearby hill overlooking the camp. They opened fire on JSA soldiers waiting in line outside a dining facility, killing three soldiers (one American and two ROK Katusas) and injuring over 20 more soldiers and some civilians. Please contact me if you have any information about this incident.

Comments: The last US company, HHC, UNCSB-JSA officially deactivated 31 October 2004. I was the commander. My Scouts officially came off the "hill", OP Ouelette, 10 September 2004. A sad, but historic, moment. Currently there is still a US contingent, with a US Battalion commander and staff, serving as the combatant commander. A great place to serve. I spent three years in Korea, half with 2-9 IN (M), 2ID, then the other half up in the DMZ. My salute to all my brothers, both US and ROKA I served with and who have served on the "Z." Take care, God Bless.
Very respectfully, MAJ Gary C. Kuczynski

One of the greatest and most challenging assignments ever and would be great to hear from anyone who experienced "Moni-Ins" and the far more enjoyable "Monk-outs." Who can forget the HMA, the Sancutary and the Monestary and I hear it is all gone now.

Comments: looking for anyone who served in 2nd platoon JSF from 89 to 90. Or anyone who wants to talk about the time there. I have alot of pictures and great memories. I spent 4yrs in the Army 88-92 after leaving korea I was stationed at Ft.Lewis in Washington State. I wasn't home very long and we went to the Mojave Desert "NTC" to train the National Guard for Desert Storm. In July 92 I left the military, and by far my greatest memories were with my fellow soldiers in the JSA. I currently abide in Washington State, I work as a Commercial Electrician in the Puget Sound Region and Seattle. Currently I'm building a New 200 room lodging center on Ft. Lewis. Since getting out of the Army I have done many Electrical jobs on Ft. Lewis. I have to say I am very proud to be there, it's great to see all the soldiers. The ones that I have talked to are very patriotic, and love their country. Thanks for reading, God Bless

This tour, and the reality of what we did, spoiled me for the rest of my career in the Army until I went to Kosovo in 1999. It was real; no drills, no practices, no "do-overs", no bullshit. But it was also so much fun with a bunch of crazy guys. The last of the all-male units. I really do miss those days. Take care fellow vets of the JSA.

I am also trying to find one of my good Katusa friends, but don't know how to go about it. If anyone knows how to locate Huh,Yoon Suk, Please let me know. Most of us who went to JSA when we got off the plane were assigned because of our height. Moose night was probably the part of history that stands out in every 19 year olds mind. The friendships that were there for the year is the part that I would like to tap into. Please drop a line.

It was a great time to be in when draftees and enlistees served at the same time. A good bunch of guys (some goofy dogs) and many stories of listening to loud music in smoke filled hootches. We were lucky to have been there in those days.
Look forward to hearing from any guys that were there in 72 and 73.

A Korean boy ran out into the road outside of Seoul and I struck him with my vehicle and I was almost "strung up" by the locals. My fellow MP co-horts from Seoul whisked me away just in time. Anyone know where Ronnie Rupp is now (He was from somewhere in PA.originally) ??

Comments: Looking for anyone how served with me in the JSA. Empie,Lester,Mac,Smith,Berryhil,SGT Brown, you know how you are there are to many names. But Joe Butcher should have told you that him and Huebner were standing on cordon row watching a north korean tour when the Chinese JDO defected. Yes I know that 1 PLT had the duty that day but there were five or six maddogs augmented that day.Butcher,Huebner,Vanover,Empie, and Collins. As for X-Mas 1989 The maddogs and some members from 4 PLT were useing any thing we could find to sledding down the hill from the JSF orderly room and ditching just before we ran into the building at the end or the escort car that some one droped in to the turtle ditch. We also used one of the CUCV's to instruct the fine art of bumper skiing. It was truly a great time and I would not give it up for anything.

Comments: Many fond memories of my time at JSA. Lived in Hooch T-9 and remember many a mad dash to fill the oil can for the space heater. Dizzy was my dog during my tour and also a resident of T-9.
Many transitions during my tour... m-14's to m-16's, the escort jeeps, the buco helmets, the pinups had to come down, the 50 cal arrived (assigned to me and the motor pool sgt because we were the only guys at that time who had trained with a 50), Bullet the compound boss dog was poisoned by an unknown, and other things lost in the haze.
Was there for the JAL passenger release, the forest fire, the Oct '70 incident, the Eldridge Cleaver demonstration, and too many minor scuffles to mention. It was a high tension job but at 21 I had a ball. The view from the top of the water tower was magnificent.
Glad to see so many web pages dedicated to this unit, it's not very well known outside the military. Hats off to my JSA brothers...... if the world only knew.....

Comments: Was there when the fight broke out because of the general that went up there in civilian clothes. Remember when Franco Harris visited. I was the guy that drove chow up there on the dat of the big fight. Was in base camp when the alarm went off. We all got on our combat gear and thought we were going to war. Just the short distance from Pan Mun Jom to Camp Kitty Hawk the news was that there were guy's laying all over the ground. They loaded us on trucks and we were ready to go help but the fight stopped. I was the only extra guy to go up there there that day because the guys needed food. I was 18 and scared. I used to go pick the girls up sometimes for Moose night.

Army Superior Unit Award |
 |
 |
Andrew Hall wrote on 2003-05-15 11:04:50.0
Comments: For all JSA members serving from 1984 through 1986, according to DA PAM 672-3 Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register(DTD 29 JAN 1988), Table 11, pages 96-97, the Army Superior Unit Award was awarded both to UNCSG-JSA and to UNCSF (JSF company) for inclusive dates. For a description of this award, see AR 600-8-22 Military Awards (DTD 25 FEB 1995), para 7-16 (p 45). See AR 670-1 Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia for wear of the award on uniform and wear of the lapel pin on civilan attire. (By the way, I have current versions of all three regs, in PDF format and can e-mail them to you. You'll need to download a free copy of Acrobat Reader versions 4 or 5; just go to www.download.com or www.adobe.com to get it. Just send me an e-mail and I'll respond with the attachments. They are not very big files.)
Inclusive dates and orders:
United Nations Command Support GroupJoint Security Area, Army Superior Unit Award18 Sep 8426 Nov 84, DAGO 9, 87.
United Nations Command Security Force, Army Superior Unit Award15 May 8515 May 86, DAGO 30, 87.
Keep in mind this is a "right-pocket" permanent award for soldiers serving during that period. Though the award orders are identified here, you can request an amendment to record, and I believe request the actual award and orders. If not, the ribbon can be purchased at any clothing sales store or through AAFES (www.aafes.com).I would think there is a certificate that you can request a copy of, but I'm not certain. Never hurts to ask.
See the addresses listed at the end of this message for requsting the award.
Wear: Per AR 670-1, para 29-11, Table 1, p. 284, regarding first and second awards, members of JSA or JSF during the inclusive dates for those awards are authorized to wear just the award. If you were a member of JSF during BOTH periods, you are authorized the wear of an oak leaf cluster. If you are part of the latter group, be certain you request both awards "with oak leaf cluster."
To get it, you should provide a copy of your orders assigning you to the unit during that period and, if you have it, provide a copy of your PCS orders at the end of the tour (not essential, but it helps). Also, if you received any award (AAM, ARCOM, HSM, etc.) during these inclusive periods and have orders for it, a copy of this can help prove you were assigned to the unit.
Per AR 600-8-22, para 1-46, p. 8:
Table 11 Addresses for requesting medals Request for: Personnel in active Federal military service or in the Army National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve. Submit to: Unit Commander. ATTN: N\A.
Request for: Medals in behalf of individuals having no current U.S. Army status or deceased. Submit to: Commander U.S. Army Reserve Personnel Center. ATTN: DARPVSEA 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis, MO 631325200.
Request for: Personnel receiving retired pay, except general officers. (This will also work for soldiers who ETS'd or otherwise left active duty but did not go into the Reserves or ARNG and did not retire.) Submit to: Commander U.S. Army Reserve Personnel Center. ATTN: DARPVSEA 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis, MO 631325200.
Request for: Retired general officers. Submit to: Commander, PERSCOM. ATTN: TAPCPDA 200 Stovall Street Alexandria, VA 223320471.

Comments: My name is Jim Strong, I was a Staff Sergeant and served as platoon sergeant for the Animals of 1st platoon, JSF Company. It was truly an honor for me to serve with the outstanding soldiers assigned to 1st platoon.I stayed busy keeping you guys out of trouble, like the night I had to get Dumpy out of the club after he smacked a whore in the head with a cue ball, or when Moorehouse moved his girlfriend in his barracks room for an extended stay. I grew as an NCO working with you guys. I apologize for leaving the Company and going to 2nd ID, but I live by my principles. If you remember we had a situation where an American soldier had a 45 stuck to his head by a katusa and our leadership wouldn't do anything to the katusa because of politics. I couldn't serve the leaders I had after that.I know some of you didn't understand, but my job was your health, welfare, and combat readiness. How could I do that with the leaders I had.I stood in front of Cpt Powell,Col Patrick and I can't remember the CSM we had, but none would do anything. That decision cost me an MSM and I was blackballed by the CSM when I arrived at Camp Howe. I proved to the leadership at Camp Howe that I wasn't the problem and had a pretty good tour with D company as the senior squad leader. I then returned to good old Ft. Benning, Georgia and was assigned to the Sniper school for a while and later was discharged on a medical for a blown out knee. I live in Indiana with my wife and 5 kids and work as a safety director for Oakwood/Schult homes. If any of the Animals are out there e-mail me and let me know how your doing.

Comments: What a great unit! Good times, great people, and real world mission. One of my fonder memories is trying to follow one of the JSF grunts in blackout drive at what seemed like 50mph between check point one and the NNSC camp. The road marches, "saturday fun runs",MAC meetings, and bbq's...all good. Does anyone remember the MAC meeting in 85 I think, when the ROK accused DPRK of sending spy boats south? Great story. The ROK announced that it destroyed a spy boat and 3-4 soldiers just off the coast. DPRK rejected this claim and tensions increased. Shortly thereafter, a MAC meeting was called at PMJ. EVERYBODY shows...UK,Aussies,Philipinos,China,Cheks,Pols,ect.So, the night before the MAC meeting a double bed semi shows up at Kitty Hawk with a large tarp covering something big. Guarding this semi was a platton of ROK rangers and wire. No one was allowed to go near this trk. The next day, the MAC meeting is packed with media and diplomats. Just as DPRK denies any involvement with a supposed spy boat, the semi trk pulles into PMJ. The tarp is pulled away to reveal a beautiful, all black speed boat with 2 Johnson outboards, sophisticated electronics, weapons, and several dive suits...with bullet holes in them. When the ROK asked if DPRK would like their soldiers remains returned to the North, the DPRK still refused to acknowledge any part of this incident. The best part had to be the Chinese delegation. As they were inspecting the boat, you could read their minds...amature's.

Comments: Though not assigned to the Panmunjom facility, in '54 &'55 we (us L-19 pilots) were required to fly as close as possible to the "Truce" area so as not to cause an airspace violation incident. An L-20 Beaver from Taegu hauling curiosity seekers from down south (they were primarily picture takers), failed to make the appropriate takeoff turn and entered restricted airspace near the Truce village. He was hit by anti- acft fire befind left wing decapitating a Lt. Col. passenger but was able to return and land. Am not sure of the airstrip designation nearby but could have been A-160. Would appreciate a response from some old Army Aviators who may have had time in the area. My home field was 10th Corps at A-6 and A-5.

Comments: Hi, I hope you're all doing well. I'm really glad for this "Korean War Project-JSA". I always wondered what I would say to you if I got in touch with anyone again. Our entire Plt was split up before the end of my tour. You remember the "politics" of the '84 firefight? or maybe what happened in '85 to one of our valued NCO's, right? There were so many crazy things that happened in only our plt and in only the time that I was there. It seems to be only those who have served there. I'm not completely believed if I tell a different vet. I haven't talked to any of you for so many years. I've found SO MANY photo's. I think you'll be suprised. Art Reid

Comments: Great site-Looking for other members from '79-'80. I don't remember what platoon I was in at the time. Closest pal was a kid named "Hollywood" seems like we might of had a Sgt Williams. Think I had a roommate named Green. Anyone that remembers the Dec 6th mine field evac let me know. Or those other crazy incidents....
It was a great tour, with great people. Crazy stuff, I loved it....

Comments: I will always remember my tour of duty in the JSA (1996-97). I crossed the demarcation line with my fellow Joint Duty NCO's. And was branded a spy for peering into the northern side of a conference room at Panmunjom.
I would like to have a copy of the list of personnel who have crossed the demarcation line, which is maintained in the Joint Duty Office.
To my South Korean translator friends (IP and others) I wish you well.

Army Nurse/Nov74Thanksgiving |

Elaine Premer (Whicker) wrote on 2003-01-18 13:08:24.0
Comments: Great to find this site.A bunch of us nurses spent Thanksgiving serving dinner with all the trimmings to troops via chopper Nov '74 The men were so happy to see "round-eyed" nurses. We were invited to eat with the guys on our last stop-Camp Casey. The only thing is we didn't know General Emerson had a seven course Thanksgiving dinner awaiting us just a few minutes away. I never thought I could politely put so much food in my stomach sitting across the table from a 3 star general. Thanks to all the guys who occassionally drove us in his staff car between Camp Casey and Seoul for social events he held. It was an experience a 21y/o Lt never forgot having M16s poked thru the partially down windows going thru check points on the way home. I remember leaving the states on Thanksgiving Day 1973 and from Travis AFB to Anchorage for fuel then on to Seoul. I looked at the early morning landscape as the plane descended in the precarious "Blue Zone" to see baren land and barbed wire. Like everyone says on the site-you never forget and memories are bittersweet. Our hooch was known as "the daquiri hooch" and we proudly made them with the best rum and eggs in the Army. Our drinks were always paid for by the chopper pilots-my favorite:the golden cadillac complete with nutmeg on the top. Our social agendas were always filled with Hail and Farewell's, late night visits to the 4077thMASH-crazy rides back to Seoul in the "Kimchi cabs" only to take off our party clothes and change into whites and off to duty the same morning. All you had to do as an Army Nurse was to show up at the airfield in your fatigues on you day off and catch a ride to Taegu, Puson for pillow shopping or whatever. I rode with a Cobra pilot once-that was fun, but our dustoff pilots disapproved of our air travel with anyone but them.I still have my business card the dustoff pilots made for us with the motto "you maul em-we haul em" -not to offend anyone, but we did crazy stuff and I still sit bolt upright whenever I hear helicopters overhead at night -it usually meant casulties. Our fuel was stolen on more than one occassion from the Yongson base. Misse Lee was our mamasong and knew just when to dry our clothes over the electric stove burners and not get caught. She was like a mother to the 5 of us at the hooch at anyone time. Noone has ever got my uniforms pressed better nor my white shoes whiter. You would come home from work she would wash your uniform on a wash board the dry and press it and put your brass on before she left for the day. I taught Girl Scouts swimming in the Yellow Sea on administrative leave one summer-I remember the tides-some days the water was far away from the last time you got in.I would love to hear from anyone that served then-especially any of the dustoff pilots or nurses or those that remember the "Mile High Club" on DMZ.I found this site because my son is now at Camp Casey fresh out of basic at Ft Benning and Airborne.I have another son reporting Valentine's Day 2003 headed for airborne also-they must have caught their mother's love of flying in choppers-but honestly, you'd have to shoot me before I'd jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. I'm a "gas passer" now -anesthesia type and looking for more adventure although I'll probably never be able to duplicate the adventure in Korea because it is a special memory in the hearts of everyone that ever served there.

Combat Infantry Badge to be awarded Thursday
PANMUNJOM, Republic of KoreaAn 8th U.S. Army soldier will receive the Combat Infantry Badge Thursday at the Joint Security Area.
Master Sgt. Jeffrey G. Holbrook, operations NCO, Korea Regional Office, is receiving this prestigious award for his actions during the Nov. 22-23, 1984 armistice violation that happened at the JSA.
A firefight occurred at the JSA in 1984 when a Soviet defector ran across the demarcation line. He was followed across the line by several North Korean guards who were attempting to stop him. Shooting quickly broke out between the North Korean guards and the ROK and U.S. guards.
Reinforcements were brought to the fight from both sides. Twenty-four minutes later, a cease-fire was called.
One ROK soldier was killed and one U.S. soldier was injured in the skirmish.
The awards ceremony will be held near the Freedom House in Panmunjom at 3 p.m. Lt. Gen. Charles C. Campbell, 8th U.S. Army commander, will present the award to Holbrook.

Comments: I had the honor of serving in the UNCJSA-JSF 4th plt BARBARIANS in the late eighties. It was one of the best experiences of my life time. It really shaped me as a soldier and a person. I think about the guys I served with, and to this day I still miss them. I participated in operation Paul Bunyon II, Deal with a chinese defector , and the Rev Moon and a radical student crossing the MDL at Panmunjom. Had many a good time at the HMA and sanctuary. Comments: I arrived in Korea in July of 1985 as a freshly promoted E5. What I learned in the next year and the experience of being there shaped how I developed as an NCO and leader. It benefited me ways I can't begin to explain.
I'm now a First Sergenat about to retire. I look back on over 20 years with the Army and I can't think of a single event that stands out more than the year being a "turtle." I think of it all the time. My best stories come from the experiences there. And when I need to escape for a little while, all I have to do is start thinking about the place and I'm there.
One day I want to see it again.

Comments: I will always look back fondly at my time spent at the JSA. The JSA has the "best of the best" - soldiers that volunteer to suffer for a cause. May every veteran of the JSA and his family be blessed.
I will never forget the dart games, barracks parties, alerts, music blasting 24-7, the plaques, the friends, POWs, Remains Exchanges, Clinton's visit, and high level of soldiering going on in the JSA.
When at Bonifas I was PFC/SPC Jason Gundersen in the NBC Room. I loved the morning runs with 1st SGT Lopez - he was one fast old man. During my stay I spent most of my free time drinking beer and in the gym.
Anyone that served with me at the JSA - email me as I'd be happy to hear from you. I still see my best friend from the JSA - Dave Leadbetter on occasion. He is serving in the Coast Gaurd in Northern California currently.
