Comments: I was with JSA in 78/79, with 1st Plt. Animals, (Water Buffalo). 1st Lt. Gaye was the Unit commander. I got there straight from boot camp. Seems that they were having trouble finding guys with out an Artl.15. My being there turned out to be so positive and all the guys there were so stract, at least on post. I think that our platoon names Animals, Mad Dogs, Renegades, Barbarians was for our actions “Down Range”. For me I had no other military experience to compare my time at JSA with. Later when I extended my tour in country I went to the 1/38 Inf. at Cp. Hovey. (At the time you could not extend and stay at JSA. Don't know if it is the same way now.) It was then that I could truly appreciate the quality of the guys I served with. At the time I thought all units were that sharp. (They should been.)

I was also with the 38th during our tour at the “D” guard posts when South Korean president Park Chung Hee was assassinated. I just figured that this is it and god please let them find me with a bunch of dead KWA around me. Good thing was that old Kim il song was just as surprised as us.

One good thing was that it started me off on the right foot. My standards were always higher than the unit I was assigned to. I ended up doing 2 more tours in Korea, and one with 101st and one with the 4th Div. stateside.

I'm now in Chicago with my wife of 20 years and 2 sons, working for an online company.

I still miss that place. One day I will probably go back and take the tour, (Only this time I may give the KPA the Finger they so richly deserve) and buy some Merry Mad Monk trinkets and play a round of golf.(Ka-boom)

If you ever visit the Military.com chat room I’m Opfor6. There is a JSA unit page there also, run by SGM Laurence Williams. My page is dedicated to Opfor units.

If Wanson (Wonzingy), Perry, or Cassey see this you now have my e-mail.

JSA In front of them All and Animals lead the way.

The professionalism displayed by the soldiers was the best in the army. When we worked, we worked hard and under a lot of pressure; when we partied we really "PARTIED". I'll never forget forget living in those open bay quansit huts with the diesel space heaters...Burrrrrrrr! Also remember the third platoon's dogs....Shorty and Alice. Interested in hearing from anyone assigned to the third platoon during this period.

Soldier receives honor years after mission

By Staff Sgt. Kanessa Mynett-Allen

The U.S. Army prides itself on recognizing and honoring Soldiers who distinguish themselves through actions above and beyond the call of duty.

For one 25th Infantry Division (Light) Soldier, that honor arrived Monday, 16 years after an event he said changed his entire perspective on the United States military.

Staff Sgt. Gary Ross, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 25th ID (L), division deployment training center noncommissioned officer-in-charge, was awarded the Bronze Star with V device and the Combat Infantryman's Badge for a combat action he took part in as a private while stationed in Korea more than a decade and a half ago.

Lt. Col. Sam Holloway, division supply officer and Ross' supervisor, said this honor means closure for Ross.

"It's final recognition for an outstanding performance of duty a long time ago. This was a long time coming, and it's a well deserved honor," Holloway said.

Ross was awarded the Bronze Star for "exceptional valor as a rifleman assigned to the Joint Security Force Company, United Nations Command Security Force at Panmunjom, Korea Nov. 23, 1984."

Ross and his unit took part in a firefight with thirty North Korean Soldiers in pursuit of a Soviet defector, ensuring border security and the safety of the defector and others in the UN command sector of the Joint Security Area.

Brig. Gen. Carl Eikenberry, 25th ID (L) Assistant Division Commander (Support), presented the awards. Eikenberry was a major assigned as Ross' deputy commander at the time the firefight for which he was recognized ensued.

Eikenberry explained to the guests the circumstances surrounding the long wait for Ross' overdue award and how the company commander, who now works for the Secretary of the Army, had to launch a campaign "to recognize this Soldier who performed heroically that day."

Eikenberry said it was important to remember that it's not what a Soldier wears on their chest that is important, but that it's what's inside their head and heart that matter and make a difference. He noted that Ross has been taking difficult assignments throughout his entire career and not having had these prestigious awards until now has not changed the high quality of Soldier he is.

Ross said being recognized for a combat action that took place so long ago came as a surprise and it's a huge honor for him to receive these awards.

"I was not expecting it. It makes you feel really good that someone thought enough about it to keep on this after all these years," Ross said.

"I continuously think of what happened over there because people died, but I never thought about it as an award due."

Ross, who initially joined the Army to earn enough money for his college education, said that that one day in Korea, just six months after he enlisted, changed his outlook on the military's mission altogether. "If this did not happen I would not have made a career out of it. I take pride in the Army and it shows a great deal of honor that I received this now. With or without it, I am proud."

Howard Drew wrote on 2000-10-17 03:25:48.0

Comments: Hello "Brothers",

Kudos on the website. Hands reaching out across the globe.

I served at Camp Bonifas, not Greaves or Casey, but at JSA. I take pride in my tour 1995-1996. We had LT COL Randy Gardner as our Battalion Commander. I was assigned to the S3 Operations as a 71LF5. I had numerous opportunities to go out on night time patrol with the Scouts. I seen all the terrain covering the whole sector. I was even fortunate enough to re-enlist in the DMZ, also to complete my PLDC course and most of all, meet Bruce Willis and the whole Planet Hollywood (USO tour) crew (ie. Arnold, Brooke, Don Johnson,... All in all, I loved it. Face it. From the proganda radio from the north blasting all the time. The 24 alert drills. Weapons qualifications. And oh yes....."SoJu Hill"... Do you guys remember running up and down that hill off of MSR 1 in the a.m.? I came back to the states running 12minute 2miles on the PT test.

I had a problem with our evac site if the N. Koreans crossed over. Our secondary off camp bunkers was really a problem with me. Somehow I knew if it got to that point, we might have to take in some serious considerations. I love seeing the underground tunnels reaching from N.Korea to S.Korea.

I was the BN XO driver as well, so I was constantly here and there. Night vision goggles on patrol or strapped up with 9M on site at Pan Mun Jom in the daytime. Fortunately, I didn't have to do the bus tours. I was mainly, heavily involved being in Operations, but behind the scenes.

The one memory that truly sticks out would be the border crossing for downed helicopter pilot, CW2 Bobby Hall. I was actually on his escort detail from the DMZ "line" to the LZ at Camp Bonifas. The look of relief on his face, is one I will never forget.

Take care "brothers"....

I am enjoyed my time at JSA (83-85...PLT. LDR. 4th Platoon, Barbarians....Group Adjutant....). It was the wild west in those days. DMZ World we called it. But those days are passed. Now I am a respectable citizen. Ha!....Hope the Army finally got a grip on that place. Because they didn't have one then.

My Platoon was first troops to man outposts on the mountain access to I Corps HQ at Camp Red Cloud when the North Korean infiltraters attempted the assasination on S Korea Pres Pak Song Rea. I was reassigned to the 663rd Engr Co (LE) and assigned to the Joint Security Area to Supervise the Operation on the Rock Quarry and Rock Crusher equipment, with a detachment of 30 equipment operators. Our mission was to Quarry and crush enough rock to lay a basecourse from JSA to Panmunjom so that asphalt could be applied. The reason was to reduce the dust made by UN vehicles which was used by the N Koreans as a smoke screen for their ambushes.

Comments: Stationed JSA April 1972 to January 1974. Was courier most of that time. Daily trips to Soeul. Picked up most of the replacements. Would like to hear from others. The last of the draftees with attitudes. Remember the dogs, washing the road in the DMZ, smashed beer bottles in the Motor Pool Hooch, Moose Bus Guard, and Gunstock.

Comments: I was amazed to find this, what amazes me more is that no one cares about the important standing mission of the JSA. I put everything I had and more into Camp Bonifas, and I must say that it taught me many valuable lessons, anyone who served over there lately can more than likely say the same, anyone that's there right now, trust me, you will actually miss it from time to time. I'd love to hear what's going on over there from time to time, so e-mail me if you have the time. thank you.

Comments: From October 95 to January 2000 - Saw CSM Heckler eat one too many free chicken wings... kicked out of the club for moshing, re-painted the motorpool with a very small paintbrush. Witnessed the insanity of a monk's party. The Manchu Mile, 229'er, and had my Easter ruined by some obstinate North Koreans. Dealt with a solid year filled with the bipolar antics of SSG Wittle. ETS'ed from Korea the same weekend I won one of the People to People awards in 1996.

Comments: During the past couple of years I made contact with Mike Brouilette "Brew" (formerly private, now major) and William Fergueson "Fergy" of our 1976 JSA Mad Dog Platoon. Just wanted to say Hi to any other Mad Dogs and 1st and 3rd platoon members and staff who happen to surf this way. Check out our Paul Bunyan photos on the JSA website. I think the date I wrote on the photo of Lt. Ankley is wrong (spaced out, I guess). It should actually be 21 August 76. If you have photos you ought to submit them to the JSA website (contact: SSUIT@aol.com OR panmunjom@aol.com).

Comments: I served at Camp Kitty Hawk in 86-87. Now a Deputy Sheriff in Salem, OR. Trying to track others down that served between the years 85-88. Also trying to contact company commander or Lt.'s that served during this time. I need someone who was there at this time to verify some facts for my current Dept. Our Law Enforcement Certification body can't give me credit for the time spent at JSA without some other confirmation that we did function as a Special Military Police Company. Due to the "Nature" of our mission (I know many of you know what I am talking about) much of what we did went unrecognized. Does anyone remember MR. CLEAN - Sp4 Brain Vanderveen? How about Sp4 Terry Scott? Sp4 Mark Sides (tour guide-easy job!) LT. Foster? LT. Misel. Contact me at JColeMCSO@Aol.com

Comments: I arrived at JSA in 1990 (during Desert Storm) and 13 months later left in 1991. Those 13 months were another life ago, but my memories of such a unique experience stay with me today.

Looking back now, Duckworth was right...the JSA experience was, as he put it, "cool". Of course, at that time, I didn't think so.

If any of you ex-JSA'ers (before or after my time, especially before) wish to contact me, I would welcome your contact.
