Comments: I spent my year on the DMZ assigned to the DMZ platoon of the 501st signal company based out of CP Humphreys. Anyone that was forward deployed on the DMZ at DET J, DET K, or DET L shoot me an e-mail. I spent 4 onts on each DET from JUN 94 - JUN 95. Was there for the U.S. chopper (Kiowa) shootdown & Kim Il Sung's death by heart attack! I'll never forget the night evacs and times on the DET's. If you know what the DET's are, shoot me an e-mail. Comments: I am looking for anyone who can recall any specific un-professional/un-becomming, incidents/problems with 2nd.Lt.McKINNEY(5/20-INF_C co.?,Camp CASEY)1990.I served 2 back to back tours on the DMZ,the first w/ 2/503,the latter w/ 5/20,1990.I recall hearing that Lt. McKINNEY,relieved my squad leader @ the time,SSGT.Lorenzo CRUZ,a 15+ year ARMY Veteran, of duty, for defecating on himself(an un-likely story and most humiliatating claim),and i remember him(McKINNEY),used to like to throw his weapon(M16-A2) down on the ground,in attempt to intimidate soldiers when he was "mad/pissed",get in their face and start yelling/screaming, while pushing up against them with his body(I witnessed an incident where he(McKINNEY)did this and almost knocked the guy over,he was pushing so violently and screaming.I also had an incident with this Lt.,on a live fire exercise off,but adjacent or in close proximity to the DMZ(they had nice new tile showers and latrines up on a hill @ this range, name???).Any stories, events,or recollections of Lt. McKinney, and his actions,or of those he caused to suffer,or of similiar leaders????

Comments: I served from May 1989-May 1991. It was extended because of Desert Storm. I was in Korea for 20 months. Dated a guy I think John Stockton. He did the Iron Man comps. He liked to bite;) Also friends with a guy named Boz, Brandon Walker, Brandon Ashby, Yates (we got tattoos together). Can't remember them all. I worked the sick-call clinic, and in the ER. I drove an ambulance. If any of this sound familiar, give me buzz. Time of my life.

Comments: Just wanted to give a shout out to all the guys who served with me in Camp Pelham Korea from Aug 89 - Aug 90. Hope that all of you are safe and healthy. I was just remembering the good time we had in our little installation, roasting bigs, playing softball, volleyball and have a few cold ones on the weekend. That was truly one of the best times I had in the Army. There was a lot of togetherness and PRIDE. I know sometime we got a little loud and crazy but overall we had a blast! Hope to hear for some of my brothers but for now take care and God Bless all of you!

Donations needed for new Currahee KIA Memorial

Hoyt Bruce MOORE wrote on 2009-07-03 15:25:55.0

Comments: Over 1,400 Currahees have made the supreme sacrifice for our country. You may have known some of them. But what you may not know is that there is no single memorial to all the soldiers of our Regiment who have been killed in action. This situation is about to change. Work has already started on a memorial, but your help is needed. At present, there is a need to raise $38,000. This is the unfunded dollar amount required to complete this memorial. This tribute to our fallen is being paid for by people like you. The Army has provided the land; however, soldiers, and veterans, along with Currahee friends and family, will have to come together if we are to complete this project. Now is the time to step up and take action. Check out the 506th Association web page www.506infantry.org/projectstable.html to see what the memorial will look like and how you can make this dream a reality.

Comments: Just stumbled onto this site searching info on the axe murders at the JSA, have fond memories of Korea. Sonjuri, the Yaki and fries after the clubs, catching the train from Munsan to Seoul with a bunch of cool guys from the JSA and gettin so drunk off Soju and crown royal that I didn't make any clubs the guys dumped me in the main post gym at Seoul I woke up the next morning in center court hugging that nice cool floor! Watchin the fights between the ground troop guys and the air troop guys from Cp Stanton when they would try to take over our vill(Sonjuri).

And taking bets on how many M-1 Abrams tanks would go thru the water crossing before taking out the apartments strategically placed at the exact right spot where they turned onto the hardball during winter alerts... Comments: I ran across this site by accident. I'd like to hear from you if you were stationed at Camp Pelham 91-92. Even though I don't miss Korea, and much less SonyuRi, those days are embedded in my memory forever as the "lost year."

The NCo club, the enchanting nightlife in SonyuRi, and who can forget, the Yakimandu with ketchup and ramen with cheese at 3 a.m. after a night of hanging out with your buddies drinking Soju and OB beer.

The "black marketing" of mess hall cheese/MREs, the bus rides to Camp Casey and Soul, and the COLD nights of guard duty in the field, Ayima's tent of goddies in the field (she knew the exact coordinates where we were jumping to before the BC did).

And who can forget the mess hall food, creations of SFC Santiago (PiNueve)? Big Bird (CSM)? $12 case of Bud at the mini PX? Sneakin out ofcamp on Sat nights without a pass with your 1SG and a crew in the back of a Hummer?

Anyways, hope to hear from you crazy SObs soon!

Comments: I would love to meet up with the First Sergeant who said I had a serious integrity issue. He would be so surprised to know that he was played like a violin and his actions unfolded exactly as they were designed to. No harm no foul...?? Well look at me now!

And to you Major...did you two put any consideration and thought into the family that you were about to destroy? Being a field grade officer gives you the ability to administer field grade articles but it does not give you the right to disregard human life!

I lost my grandmother, who raised me, after I first arrived and I had a newborn who I had not even met yet because neither of you two would approve my leave.

You two decided to strip me of all I had worked for and kept me in country one month over my tour to teach me a lesson...???

The truth is that your boldness taught me an early lesson about the military. I once had hopes to make a career of the Army but you two shattered that abruptly.

I decided to make a better future for myself and I did just that!

The dark cloud that covered quickly diminished when I decided to take things into my own hands.

While on extra duty, I wrote numerous letters and faxed MANY every night to my Senator. Whom we all know as Max...but names are not important. What is important is the truth. I also mailed letters to others of upper echelon because it seemed I had no support in my corner. Which is 100% true!

I was receiving NO PAY DUES for MANY MANY months. Nearly 8 months of that went on. I could not get my own company to approve advance pays for me. Nobody and I mean nobody would help me!

I did find help!

Someone who FINALLY LISTENED! Thank You Max! I just like Max as the character, so deal with it.

I was handed a field grade Article 15. E-4 promotable lowered to E-1. Loss of 1/2 pay for 2 months. Extra Duty for 45 days. I turned that all around by sticking up for what is right. I made someone listen by not giving up. I never gave up. I did all the things that the Army had taught me to do but what I did not do is give into the BS which I was being fed!

I fought and won. I received all the proper back pay, 8 months worth! I was still able to use my G.I. Bill and pursue a very lucrative life!

Good things can come of bad. It just matters how bad you really want it!

Go INDIANS and Good Luck GRIZ!!!!!!

Comments: Get the latest information on Currahee Rendezvous 2009 on the 506th Association web page www.506infantry.org/projectstable.html . No this is not another reunion, nor is it just a gathering of veterans. This is something very special and will be remembered for its unique approach to the homecoming of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 506th Infantry Regiment. Our regiment is currently deployed to Afghanistan and COL Pete Johnson, Regimental Commander, has decided to have a three day celebration when the troops return to Fort Campbell. Plans are now being made and YOU are invited. That is correct, all 506th Veterans are invited to attend CURRAHEE RENDEZVOUS 2009. Although the Currahees will return to CONUS in late winter or early spring, in order to allow for block leave and event planning, the Rendezvous is scheduled for May 28- 30, 2009.

After DMZ Mission with 1/5 I went to Camp Howze and was assigned to B co 1/503 INF. During the first Gulf War we were getting re-assigned left and right because of units deactivating, if you were there you know what I am talking about.

In total I wound up doing two full DMZ rotation before 1/503 Handed the mission back over to the ROK's.

Applicants are reminded to include their mailing address, phone number, and email address with their application. In addition, items that are sent with the application cannot be returned. Comments: I served in Korea and didn't do a Z mission. I got there in nov 90, when the 1/5th was on the Z. The powers to be decided not to send me there, and I had to wait to join my unit when they got off the DMZ. I was with HHC 2nd Brig, and then went to HHC platoon, TOW section, Dco 1/5 inf. I was there until july 91, and went to Eco after the 1/5 th transitioned to Bradly Fighting Vehicles. My MOS was 11-H. Thats why I did't go to the DMZ in the summer. The whole Bradly trasition. They sent The 503rd instead. Which to my understanding, was the last DMZ mission for the 2nd ID. The US turned over The US Army's section of the Z to the Rok Army in the fall of 91. But I have a lot of crazy memories from my time in The ROK. I went to Ft Carson and finished my time in the army there. It wasn't the same, Korea was a wooh place to be in The Army. Allthough I don't miss sleeping in -35 degree weather, or the smell. But I took lots of photos, which is what i do now. I work as a photographer, and im hoping to start my own bussiness someday. Some guys Im hoping to hear from are grey, booth, wolf, deville, dupont, or anybody that served with the 1/5th.

Brian Stearns wrote on 2008-03-18 02:28:37.0

Comments: my name is brian stearns and remember an attack during 1995. i was in 3rd platoon charlie company 1/506th. my platoon sgt, myself, and another specialist set a cratering charge in the path of a t-72 (may have been t-55). the charge didn't explode on time for someone cut the time fuse too long. inadvertantly, myself and platoon sgt caught some flack from the damned thing when it did go off. we went out to check the situation out since we lost track of the tank. sometimes i have nightmares about it and the tank fired a round between the two of us whcih blew platoon sgt's leg off. I remember doing first aide on him for some time before our platoon medic found us.

whole battalion went on twenty-four hour alert. I got shot in the head (protected by kevlar) and both hips (again protected by kevlar vest and two ammo pouches. they truly saved my life.

everynight I look out windows before going to bed looking for the one who shot me. don't suppose i'll ever find him.

my brother and cousin were both stationed there down south around casey. they stepped outside one of there barracks to have a smoke and fell through the ground where koreans dug a tunnel. didn't catch any of the little guys though.

can't say i remember much about the tank incident other than that. sometimes some of the other guys from my platoon show up. sometimes the medic never shows up. it's like i am reliving the attack over and over again. every time is different though. Sometimes recall an attack on AHA while i was on guard that night at Charlie gate.

We didn't have Humvees when I was there. I'm trying to track any of the old guys I was stationed with to see what they're up to these days. The guy who owned the photo shop on base "Snap" said alot of pics did not come out. He lied. He did not want the photos to get out. I had a few. Other guys in Srv. Battery had some too. (we witnessed what it was like to harvest a dog like wild game). After I ETS and returned home, my folks home burned to the ground and with it all my pics. I would like to get in touch with guys from my unit and see who still has pics. Would also like to contact Sgt Todd Lipka and Marco Diaz(The post office guy)..Thanks

Looking for 2nd Engineers in Korea from 1967 to 1970 - Any Company

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Phil Steward wrote on 2007-12-16 18:40:07.0

Comments: Please contact me. I am looking for any and all former members of the 2nd Engineer Battalion from any Company who served in Korea at any time in 1967 thru 1969.

Several of your brothers are still fighting the effects of our time in Korea. We need photos, copies of Combat Pay orders, statements of duties of the 2nd Engineers who worked in and along the DMZ or who were in my Company, E Company (Float Bridge).

Right now I am working with several guys from 2nd Engineer Battalion who have multiple health issues as a direct result of exposure to Agent Orange. Yes guys, that stuff sprayed along the fence, around the guard towers and the Guard Posts and Out Posts we were building was the infamous Agent Orange. The stuff sprayed along the roads inside the Zone and around the bridgeheads at Freedom, Libby and the Spoonbill Bridges was Agent Orange. The stuff sprayed around our compounds to kill the brush and weeds was Agent Orange.

Even if you have not had any symtoms, like Diabetes, heart problems, a variety of different cancers, or any other health issues, we need to hear from you. And if you are fighting or have faught with VA for care and compensation for these health problems, we need to hear from you. And most importantly, if you had children conceived after your return from Korea who were born with birth defects, we need to hear from you. If you have been successful in winning a claim filed for Agent Orange poisoning or PTSD as a result of your service in Korea, it is very important for you to contact me.

Even though I am just a former Captain and Company Commander, I made a promise 40 years ago to stand up for my men and to back them in anything as long as they did what the officers and NCOs asked them to do. I take that promise very seriously and now, 40 years later, I will continue to back and stand up for our men. It is very important that I hear from you as soon as possible. For many of your brothers, the time could be very short, but they have families who will need help even if it is too late for the men themselves.

If you can and will help, please contact me at my email: pesteward@hotmail.com, or call me at (706) 996 - 4057.

Thank you.

Does anyone remember when Kim il Jung, not sure on spelling, was supposed to bury his father in Seoul in July of 97 when 2/9 Infantry was in his way at Warrior Base? Live alert "Stampeding Buffalo". I also remember chow hall at Camp Boniface was the best food I ever ate while in the army. I guess they figured you never knew if it might be the last meal. Numbers stuck in my head Camp Casey was 2 minutes and 11 seconds within artty range of North Korea. I always figured that would be enough time for me to get one boot on. Also, still have scars on my legs from the two Manchu Miles I walked for a belt buckle, actually the buckle means more to me than any other award the army ever gave me. When I was in National Guard had a squad leader that tried to make me take my Manchu belt buckle off as unauthorized. My 1st Sgt. told him to go to hell because I earned the right to wear the buckle. Names I remember Alfred Kalous, Sgt Ford, Sgt. Jackson, Larry Custis my room dog, Cpl. Hire, Spc. Wolf, Sgt. Gonzalas, Butter Bar Brusselback, Sgt. Gassman. Now Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks the original voice of the war in Iraq was our battalion CO. Great site and "Keep Up the Fire" off the Manchu Warriors.

Comments: I was stationed in Korea in January of 1990, and by the end of Feburary we were up in the DMZ for the 3 month rotation. At the time it was called "Warrior Base" but it's no longer there from what I here. I actualy did three rotations because 2/503 disbanded when we got back, and I went to the unit that relieved us, so I went back up again for a second rotation. Then when we came back from that rotation the mechanized unit I was in got rid of all the leg infantry guys, so we went to a leg unit and that unit was allready on the DMZ so I only spent about 1 1/2 months up there with them....definatly saw my share of communists and the DMZ.....it was fun though I realy enjoyed patrolling. I was on all three American guard posts, "Guard Post 128" "Guard Post Collier" and "Guard Post Ouellete".....looking for anybody who was up there around that time, especialy my roomate "Jurnett" was his last name, funny black guy, we were tight, he knows who I am if he reads this and see's my name.

The biggest one I could remeber was tdc outside of camp casey. I went there around four on a three day pass, and we started drinking in one of the country music bars, the next thing I remeber it was the next moring and I was in an abanden house somewhere on the hillside. Then I also reember all the women for hire if you know what i mean, espcially outside of Camp Yongson. We would go to the heavy metal club and then go to the kettle club and then roll back down hooker hill. It was great just having a blast, thne going back to the Dmz and on patrol freezing my butt. off

My time in Korea was a positive life changing event that I will never forget. My time in the field during "team spirit" also generated a myriad of wonderful memories of friendship and team work. I have since moved on to a career in petroleum geology that has taken me all over the world. I think my time in Korea ignited the drive to pursue a career that would take me to many places.

Comments: The 4th Brigade Combat Team and the 506th Council at Fort Campbell, KY are looking for 506th historical artifacts that they can display in the 506th regimental areas at Fort Campbell. If you have any 506th-related artifacts/momentos from the 1st BN, 506th Infantry in South Korea that you would be willing to DONATE, contact 1SG(R) John E. Foley (C Co, 1st BN, 506th, 1990-1991) at 270-798-3215 or chagress@outdrs.net . John is the Museum Technician at the Don F. Pratt Memorial Museum at Fort Campbell, and notes, “the government has a policy against loans . . . stories and pictures are even more valuable in many cases than the artifacts. Often times many of the most mundane items such as belts, pants, socks, etc. that date from that time are very valuable to the museum for making accurate displays to portray how the soldiers lived and survived.”

Cant forget those days up on 4P3 during Christmas/ Newyears and the visit by those second string Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, I gave em hell cause they had those baggy ass sweat suits on. Can anyone remember the incident in the vill (Songjuri) when we fought those Bucketheads, and they protested outside of Camp Pelham for a week or so. The commander of 2ID came up from Casey and stopped our deployment for the feild to photograph all of Camp Pelham to distribute to the village residents. Thanks to Spc Dana Williams, and Capt. Never found myself in another unit that was as technically and tactfully proficient. Names like Lujan, Gault, Bass, Wieczorek, Gutierrez, Jenkins, Irwin, Manuel, Teffeteller, Kimbler, and Mills, set standards that could never be equaled. Greatest assignment in all of Korea.I was the S-2 NCOIC SSG Burton at the time.It would be great to here from someone who served during this time.

Comments: 90-91 drank alot in Sonjury and froze alot north of the Imjin, miss the food and that wonderful aroma that permiates the country. People do not realize how close we were to the commies. I could drill one with a spit ball at times on the Z. I just thought to myself, I'm going back home soon and you'll be stuck in your poor little commie country! After spending time in the Rought Terrain Parachuting PLT at Ft Bragg Bco 27th Engr Bn. Korea seemed like a walk in the park, exept that this park had mines and people (1 million)that were there for one reason....to kill me. Keep up the warrior spirit so that we can protect those that don't have a clue, and want to bitch about it aka. protesters. All the Way!

Comments: A very good friend, Paul Turner, who lived in Missouri City, Texas, passed away on September22, 2001. I attended his wake this evening, and even though I knew that he was in the U.S.Army, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division, I was not aware until tonight just how decorated this man was. His family displayed all his battle ribbons and awards but have no idea as to what they represented. They say they found them in a box that has not been opened for 47 years and that Paul would never talk about them. Paul has spoken to me as a friend as well as on a professional basis and often spoke of his duty in Korea but never did I know, or his children know, how decorated he was. In speaking to his children, they also were not knowledgeable of his accomplishments. I would like to assist them in trying to present a little history to them, if that is possible. Paul Raymond Turner was born on August 7, 1928 and passed away on September 22, 2001. I know he had extensive duty in Korea. He lived in Sugar Land, Texas and moved to Missouri City, Texas a few years ago. I also know that he was invited by the government,a little earlier this year, to attend a reunion in Korea. Can you shed some light on him

THOMAS (TOM) Bisping wrote on 2001-06-13 00:46:38.0

Comments: My name is Tom Bisping and I am the MidStates North Regional Director for the Korean Defense Veterans Alliance. Please be advised that bills have been submitted to the United States House of representatives and to the United States Senate, for the creation of a service medal for service in Korea after 27 July 1954. In the House the Bill is H.R. 1935. In the Senate the Bill is S.999. The Bill is entitled the Korean Defense Service Medal Act. PLEASE do the following: Go to the KDVA website: http://home.att.net/~kdrrc/index.htm Click on the "Legislation" button. See if your Representative or Senators are cosponsors. If they aren't, call them and tell them to support either H.R. 1935 or S.999. Get as many people as you can to do the same. Click on the "Organization" button. Find out what region your state is in and e-mail that Regional Director. This is the best opportunity there has ever been for recognition. Join the fight and be with us as we, "Take The Hill!!!"
