DMZ KOREA (CIB) 4 JANUARY 1961 - 41 MARCH 1994 |
ERIC wrote on September 5, 2012 City and State: Unit: CCO. 2/503 / CCO. 5/20 (INFANTRY) Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: It has been said that all those who served on the DMZ from the late 1960's through 1994 should not have received the CIB. Everyone who served there knows during the 1960's, 70's, and 80's there were incidents where soldiers came under attack by NKPA Soldiers; several hundred soldiers have been killed in the DMZ during these time periods. When I was there in 1990 we had an incident with an NKPA soldier who wondered into the DMZ and was spotted by one of our patrols. 30 minutes later, and several political decisions later the incident was over and the NKPA soldier ran back into North Korea. The point is the DMZ is a combat zone. Any infantry soldier who served there served in a combat zone. I have good friends who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and saw no more combat over there than we did in the DMZ, yet they came home with a CIB and their unit combat patch...should it be any different for all of us who served on the DMZ? Makes me wonder why it took the government so long to finally recognize this and authorize us the badge for serving in a declared combat zone. The following link is the link that provides all the information needed for any of you who are interested in receiving your long deserved award for serving on the DMZ. https://www.hrc.army.mil/TAGD/Awards%20and% 20Decorations%20Branch%20-%20Combat%20Infantry%20Badge% 20CIB Keywords: |

DMZ KOREA INCIDENT 1990 |
ERIC wrote on September 5, 2012 City and State: Unit: CCO. 5/20 INFANTRY Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Cco. 5/20 Infantry DMZ Korea 1990. GP Ouellette incident at Ouellette Lake. During Guard Post phase, I was assigned to Guard Ouellette. We had a night patrol that ran into a suspected NKPA Soldier by Ouellette Lake. The KATUSA on patrol spoke with the suspected NKPA soldier in an attempt to verify if this was an NKPA soldier or a resident of the DMZ village. The Patrol leader asked for a second Confirmation from another patrol as this was required at the time before engaging any NKPA Soldier. Second patrol could not verify or confirm a visual on the individual. At this time both Guard Post Collier and Ouellette, soldiers were in position with weapons facing the direction of the lake. I was in the closest bunker facing the lake watching the area with PVS5 (NVGS). We had various NCO's and Officer's in the bunker with us; I do not remember their names off hand. Approximately 30 minutes after the time the incident was initially reported the individual left the area. The first patrol followed in the direction they believe the individual ran and stopped once they reached the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). To this day, I believe the patrol did face-off with an NKPA soldier, but because of Politics, our Command preferred not to engage the soldier because of political repercussions. Keywords: Do not remember all the names involved, this incident occurred almost 22 years ago. |

That night a friend of mine was playing drums in a band at a party on the Camp Bonifas tennis courts, and a guy from Liberty bell slashed his own wrists and got beat up by his "friends". That's why I was in the s.sgts room. My friend was way too drunk too drive and knocked down a new wall. We made him leave anyway with no report, the bridge was going to close at midnight. I was responsible for the coordinating contrctual maintenance on surveillance equipment along the DMZ at 6 U.S. Army RADAR Sites - Pan Mun Jom to the Cheorwon Valley. I drove to each of the site weekly to not only check on the equipment but also to see how the troops at the sites were, even though they did not work for me. Their wellbeing was just as impotant to me as the equipment was. I logged over 10K miles, accident free, in a HMMV covering from TDC to Yongsan Garrison, and the RADAR Sites. We're looking for anyone that spent a great deal of time out in the field (he was an artillery surveyor)in the late 80s through the 90s and has developed one of the presumptive diseases attributed to Agent Orange exposure. We know Agent Orange was used in the 60s and possibly 70s at Camp Casey. We also know that dioxin (a component of Agent Orange) stays in the ground for a very long time. We are interested in if there is a cluster of health problems for vets who served there years after Agent Orange was sprayed, but spent a great deal of time in contact with the contaminated soil. CIB FOR DMZ SERVICE KOREA |
JAMES BUCKLEY wrote on November 24, 2009 City and State: Unit: 2/503(L) - 5/20(M)-2ND ID Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Just curious if any one has attempted to receive their CIB(retroactively)-The US ARMY recently rescinded their stringent and biased requirements on issuance ,for those who served on the DMZ Korea(it was almost impossible to receive). The NEW inclusive dates are///Korea on the DMZ (4 January 1969 to 31 March 1994)- and the Joint Security Area,Panmunjom,Korea(23 November 1984).I started a claim W/ABCMR- and it was returned w/o predjudice, because i didnt exaust all administrative remedies available to me,so my application is in the process of review @//// Commander,US ARMY Human Resource Command,ATTN:AHRC-PDO-PA,200 Stovall Street,Alexandria,Virginia 22332-0471.I have always had a hard time explaining to people that upon departure from "Foward Friendly Lines",at the southern boundary of the DMZ,"we" were actively engaged in a routine course of squad sized patrolling and ambush operations,to prevent and disrupt NKPA forces from openly conducting patrols, and deny enemy infiltration routes in and through the DMZ,although "we" never received a CIB.Any questions ,comments,or experiences attempting to receive the CIB retro-actively are appreciated. Keywords: The CIB is authorized for the following qualifying wars, conflicts, and operations(Korea on the DMZ)4 January 1969-31 March 1994///(Joint Security Area,Panmunjom,Korea)23 November 1984 |
