2ID DMZ VETS RETURNING TO KOREA

Comments: July 1, 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the 2IDs return to Korea after the cease fire in the Korean War. The 2ID played a major role in the Korean War and it was appropriate that the Division return to continue to play a major role in guarding Freedoms Frontier.
On that day in July, the 1st Cavalry Division was reflagged as the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Howze which was Division HQ at the time. The 2nd Indianhead Division Association is organizing a return trip for 2IDA members that were present at the reflagging and for other DMZ veterans that would like to go. We anticipate a group of about 25-30 and are still working out the details. We are working on the eligibility for participation. We are beginning a major fundraising effort to help offset the cost of the trip for the returning veterans and need to know the level of interest in this trip. The tentative plan is to depart Los Angeles about June 26 or 27, 2015 to return about July 3. You will need a current passport. If you are interested, please let us know at 2ida.mail@charter.net. Your e-mail is not a commitment, but merely an expression of interest. The leadership of the active 2ID has generously agreed to help with planning the celebration events and perhaps some tours of the area. The 2ID Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major are already at work This can be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Please let us know now so we can continue our planning.

Aves Thompson
National President, 2IDA

Comments: I was at Camp Hawkeye, C Btry 1st Bn, 2nd ADA, Nam Yang, ROK from June 1979 to June 1980. That one short year had more of an impact on me than my entire career afterward and on thru to retirement. I've posted a couple of times on here over the years, just trying to connect with some of the crew, no matter what year or years you were there because as all who served in any part of South Korea know, the connection to our particular unit/location has not so much to do with any particular time frame but more so with the fact that we have that special something in common that only those of us who were there can understand.

Comments: Comments: I was a DMZ MP at least thats what the North Koreans thought. I have always said that the DMZ is where I grew up. Stands Alone... I was there May 1990-September 1991. I remember Crossing Freedom Bridge and seeing the explosives that were there in order to Blow the Bridge in Case the North Koreans came across. We were actually just a speed bump for them. Our life expensity was a matter of a few minutes. I could look out my window from the Super Hooch and see North Korea and Propaganda Village and the smell of the rice patties will never leave my mind. I reenlisted on guard post Oulette with my supply clerk and Katusa holding the American Flag and the North Korean flag was not far in the distance. I miss those days. Everytime I went down south I was always ready to get back to Camp Greaves. The farthest I went South was to Camp Casey to get supplies except for that wonderful day when I flew back to the 101st Airborne where I had left From. I still have my camo DMZ arm band signed by all the members of the unit and my Brother Hood coin. that was really an experience. I ended up serving 26 years in defense of our great nation. I will always remember the Mine fields and the Tunnels and running up Curahee Mountain. STANDS ALONE. God Speed to all that have served on the Z.

DMZ KOREA (CIB) 4 JANUARY 1961 - 41 MARCH 1994

City and State:

Unit: CCO. 2/503 / CCO. 5/20 (INFANTRY)

Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN

Comments: It has been said that all those who served on the DMZ
from the late 1960's through 1994 should not have
received the CIB. Everyone who served there knows
during the 1960's, 70's,
and 80's there were incidents where soldiers came
under attack by NKPA Soldiers; several hundred
soldiers have been killed in the DMZ during these time
periods. When I was
there in 1990 we had an incident with an NKPA soldier
who wondered into the DMZ and was spotted by one of
our patrols. 30 minutes later, and several political
decisions later the incident was over and the NKPA
soldier ran back into North Korea. The point is the
DMZ is a combat zone. Any infantry soldier who served
there served in a combat zone. I have good friends
who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and saw no more
combat over there than we did in the DMZ, yet they
came home with a CIB and their unit combat
patch...should it be any different for all of us who
served on the DMZ? Makes me wonder why it took the
government so long to finally recognize this and
authorize us the badge for serving in a declared
combat zone.
The following link is the link that provides all the
information needed for any of you who are interested
in receiving your long deserved award for serving on
the DMZ.

Comments: Cco. 5/20 Infantry DMZ Korea 1990. GP Ouellette
incident at Ouellette Lake. During Guard Post phase, I was assigned to Guard Ouellette. We had a night patrol that ran into a suspected NKPA Soldier by Ouellette Lake. The KATUSA on patrol spoke with the suspected NKPA soldier in an attempt to verify if this was an NKPA soldier or a resident of the DMZ village.

The Patrol leader asked for a second Confirmation from another patrol as this was required at the time before engaging any NKPA Soldier. Second patrol could not verify or confirm a visual on the individual. At this
time both Guard Post Collier and Ouellette, soldiers were in position with weapons facing the direction of the lake. I was in the closest bunker facing the lake watching the area with PVS5 (NVGS). We had various NCO's and Officer's in the bunker with us; I do not remember their names off hand. Approximately 30 minutes after the time the incident was initially reported the individual left the area. The first patrol followed in the direction they believe the
individual ran and stopped once they reached the
Military Demarcation Line (MDL). To this day, I
believe the patrol did face-off with an NKPA soldier, but because of Politics, our Command preferred not to engage the soldier because of political repercussions.

That night a friend of mine was playing drums in a band at a party on the Camp Bonifas tennis courts, and a guy from Liberty bell slashed his own wrists and got beat up by his "friends". That's why I was in the s.sgts room. My friend was way too drunk too drive and knocked down a new wall. We made him leave anyway with no report, the bridge was going to close at midnight. My best friend black mailed that s.sgt for a lot of money the remainder of our tour. I used the money to exchange goods with the north Korean soldiers in Panmunjom where I worked. Oh memories.

Comments: I got a presidential unit citation and the army did'nt recognize it, go figure. If anyone remembers me from the army, I got thrown out of the jsa reunion in Las Vegas for being the drunkest mfr in the room. Oh yea, I was drunk on all my alerts in the dmz too. I drove the lead vehicle 2 1/2 when I could'nt even walk. I had to be carried. It was at night with nvgs too. I crashed into the arms room when I was getting the gear together, no one even cared a little. I sure did'nt.

Comments: Looking for anyone who was in C co 2/503 Infantry in 1990 when we went to the DMZ in February-April. I was in 1st Squad Second Platoon with Sgt. Drexler as my squad leader, and SFC Zimmerman as our PSG. My roomate was PFC Jurnett. I had a painting of a DMZ Soldier standing on Guard post Collier and I forgot the painting in my room when we disbanded. I know it is probably lost forever but I am trying to find anyone who was there and who might remember that painting and saw who grabbed it. I cannot find that painting AT ALL online or anywhere. I can swear I had Adishi paint this painting from the cover of a newsweek magazine, but all the magazine do not have that picture, Thanks for the Help and I look forward ot making contact with old Army buddies.

Comments: From 10/90 to 02/92 I was the 2ND Infantry Divisions G-2 DMZ Surveillance NCO. I was responsible for the coordinating contrctual maintenance on surveillance equipment along the DMZ at 6 U.S. Army RADAR Sites - Pan Mun Jom to the Cheorwon Valley.
I also coordinated V.I.P. visits to the sites and reported the daily equipment status reports.
I drove to each of the site weekly to not only check on the equipment but also to see how the troops at the sites were, even though they did not work for me. Their wellbeing was just as impotant to me as the equipment was.
I logged over 10K miles, accident free, in a HMMV covering from TDC to Yongsan Garrison, and the RADAR Sites.
I wish to thank all of those personnel who worked at those sites (R.S. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7) for all of their hard work and their hospitality when I was visiting their sites.
I know the sites were turned over to the R.O.K.s not long after I departed and that R.S. 1 is now the Dora Observatory (tourist site).
