Warrior Base Summer of 1997 |

John Fringo wrote on 2007-05-26 12:58:45.0
Comments: Was at Camp Casey 96-97 with 2/9 Infantry and spent most of summer of 1997 on DMZ at Warrior Base. I was on Bradley C33. We watched Mike Tyson bite off Evander Holyfield's ear on a 13" TV while eating in a little Korean shop on Warrior Base. Does anyone remember when Kim il Jung, not sure on spelling, was supposed to bury his father in Seoul in July of 97 when 2/9 Infantry was in his way at Warrior Base? Live alert "Stampeding Buffalo". I also remember chow hall at Camp Boniface was the best food I ever ate while in the army. I guess they figured you never knew if it might be the last meal. Numbers stuck in my head Camp Casey was 2 minutes and 11 seconds within artty range of North Korea. I always figured that would be enough time for me to get one boot on. Also, still have scars on my legs from the two Manchu Miles I walked for a belt buckle, actually the buckle means more to me than any other award the army ever gave me. When I was in National Guard had a squad leader that tried to make me take my Manchu belt buckle off as unauthorized. My 1st Sgt. told him to go to hell because I earned the right to wear the buckle. Names I remember Alfred Kalous, Sgt Ford, Sgt. Jackson, Larry Custis my room dog, Cpl. Hire, Spc. Wolf, Sgt. Gonzalas, Butter Bar Brusselback, Sgt. Gassman. Now Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks the original voice of the war in Iraq was our battalion CO. Great site and "Keep Up the Fire" off the Manchu Warriors.

Comments: I was stationed in Korea in January of 1990, and by the end of Feburary we were up in the DMZ for the 3 month rotation. At the time it was called "Warrior Base" but it's no longer there from what I here. I actualy did three rotations because 2/503 disbanded when we got back, and I went to the unit that relieved us, so I went back up again for a second rotation. Then when we came back from that rotation the mechanized unit I was in got rid of all the leg infantry guys, so we went to a leg unit and that unit was allready on the DMZ so I only spent about 1 1/2 months up there with them....definatly saw my share of communists and the DMZ.....it was fun though I realy enjoyed patrolling. I was on all three American guard posts, "Guard Post 128" "Guard Post Collier" and "Guard Post Ouellete".....looking for anybody who was up there around that time, especialy my roomate "Jurnett" was his last name, funny black guy, we were tight, he knows who I am if he reads this and see's my name.

Comments: I have posted before, I was in camp greaves from 94-95 in delta company. I was remebering some of the towns we would go to and party are butt off. The biggest one I could remeber was tdc outside of camp casey. I went there around four on a three day pass, and we started drinking in one of the country music bars, the next thing I remeber it was the next moring and I was in an abanden house somewhere on the hillside. Then I also reember all the women for hire if you know what i mean, espcially outside of Camp Yongson. We would go to the heavy metal club and then go to the kettle club and then roll back down hooker hill. It was great just having a blast, thne going back to the Dmz and on patrol freezing my butt. off

Comments: I served at Camp Casey with the Army from around May 1990 to August 1991. I loved my time patrolling the DMZ and I loved the friends I made there. My time in Korea was a positive life changing event that I will never forget. My time in the field during "team spirit" also generated a myriad of wonderful memories of friendship and team work. I have since moved on to a career in petroleum geology that has taken me all over the world. I think my time in Korea ignited the drive to pursue a career that would take me to many places.

Comments: I served as the mortar platoon leader for 1/503 INF REGT at Camp Casey from April of '96 - May of '97. This was my first assignment in the Army and absolute best during my 5 years of service. I was fortunate to have great NCO's and soldiers to work with and have great memories training in the field, TDC, etc. If anyone knows how to contact Joe Banner please let me know. I'd love to hear from anyone who served in the 1/503rd during the same time. "FIRST ROCK"!

Comments: I was stationed at Camp Pelham, Korea with HHB 2/17th Field Artillery from September 1983 to September 1984. My MOS was 82 Charlie (Field Artillery Survey), but I spent most of my time there working as a 71 Lima (Administrative Specialist) in the HHB office. I ran in 10K road races (I always came in 1st or 2nd place)and played on the baseball team for HHB 2/17. I had an apartment (a hooch) on the second floor over "The Boston Club". I had a number of good friends during the year I was stationed there and I am interested in hearing from anyone who may remember me.

Comments: When i first arrived in S Korea, i was stationed at Camp Casey (I didnt enjoy it)I felt useless as a 31k, radio operator, when a new CSM took over, he asked if any one wanted to transfer "up north" i was the only one to raise my hand, the CSM pulled me aside and told me i would thank him later, he was right, my year on the DMZ was the best year i spent in the ARMY! I learned the true meaning of Infantry and team work, not to mention the history i was part of, to all who served and crossed the bridge " STANDS ALONE !!!"

506th Historical Artifacts Needed |
 |
 |
Hoyt Bruce Moore wrote on 2005-09-25 00:00:00.0
Comments: The 4th Brigade Combat Team and the 506th Council at Fort Campbell, KY are looking for 506th historical artifacts that they can display in the 506th regimental areas at Fort Campbell. If you have any 506th-related artifacts/momentos from the 1st BN, 506th Infantry in South Korea that you would be willing to DONATE, contact 1SG(R) John E. Foley (C Co, 1st BN, 506th, 1990-1991) at 270-798-3215 or chagress@outdrs.net . John is the Museum Technician at the Don F. Pratt Memorial Museum at Fort Campbell, and notes, the government has a policy against loans . . . stories and pictures are even more valuable in many cases than the artifacts. Often times many of the most mundane items such as belts, pants, socks, etc. that date from that time are very valuable to the museum for making accurate displays to portray how the soldiers lived and survived.
