Comments: Remember the good times, and remember the bad times but, we all stuck it out. You know that we are protecting the south, and they dont even want us there. That eventually will spell the end of them. I think that there will be another war there eventually, and its just a matter of time before the whole place gets fried. Just like the food at TOWN SNACK. atay away fro k gogi, and stay real. CHARLIE ROCK

Comments: to the people who haved served at camp howze. we hated it when we were there. but now looking back it was one of the best times of my life. i miss all of those early alerts in the freezing cold. climbing over the mountain to get to the mess hall for those who where there in 1995. getting drunk down range and not being able to make it back to camp. i do miss all those south koreans i tried to run over with my tank. i truly feel they were the real enemy. the north koreans were cool. they never tried to steel anything from us, beat us up, protest, burn our flag, make money off of us being there etc. not many people will feel the way i do but we r all entitled to our opinion. after my one year there i have earned the right to say what i want on this issue

Comments: just reading some of these messages brought back so many memories. I was at rc4 compound, just on the other side of the village sanga ri, we were the last "attack" btry there, i believe it was turned over to the ROK army, just down the road was camp pelham. some of my memories are thunder runs in the vill, jungle juice, catching the "slicky boys" stealing our old mre's,trying to make it back from tdc when the sirens went off and paying the taxi driver $100.00 to get us there fast as he could, pulling U.P. duty at rc4 and pellham and dealing with all the drunks as they came back in from the vill, hearing the shouts of "turtle!!" when someone would drop a tray in the chow hall, the "parasite" club in the vill. P.S. though there were some tense moments, the people were great and it was one of the best years of my life, if anyone was there at the same time i'd like to hear from you.

Comments: I was recon 1/23rd Camp Hovey 1980'. During our 3 months at the DMZ we would sit on the sandbags with beers and watch ROK flares and hear their .50 cals. They fired those big things because of superiour range. One night on GP Ollette I was in a bunker with a startlight scope. I panned accross the fenceline and caught a NK looking right at me with an IR scope. In a fraction of second he was gone. We also found hollow haystacks on patrols. I sure drank a lot of Crown in the ville too. Too many road marches too. Pres. Regan got shot and we thought we were going to war. Cancelled all overnight passes too.

Comments: I was stationed in Korea in January of 1990, and by the end of Feburary we were up in the DMZ for the 3 month rotation. At the time it was called "Warrior Base" but it's no longer there from what I here. I actualy did three rotations because 2/503 disbanded when we got back, and I went to the unit that relieved us, so I went back up again for a second rotation. Then when we came back from that rotation the mechanized unit I was in got rid of all the leg infantry guys, so we went to a leg unit and that unit was allready on the DMZ so I only spent about 1 1/2 months up there with them....definatly saw my share of communists and the DMZ.....it was fun though I realy enjoyed patrolling. I was on all three American guard posts, "Guard Post 128" "Guard Post Collier" and "Guard Post Ollete".....

Comments: I served in Korea from Jan95-Jan96 in Aco 5/501st Avn (Attack) with the 17th Avn Brigade (Combat Aviation) however the unit at Eagle I was in is now 6th Cav. I remeber many cold nights and training constantly for the opertunity to give some NKPA's the ultimate opportunity to die for thier country. I remeber once infiltation incident in OCt when a few infiltators attempted to slip accross the Z and the RoK guard threw a few frags and opend up with the 60, however a couple slipped through and it was a few days before the KNP finally aprehended the other one of which was shot south of seoul and the other was a known asassain by intel. None the less I remeber great times and hard work and the sense of a real mission. Christmas was especially hard being away from my wife and daughter who first year I missed completely. However I remeber the surprise presents Captain DeVille had for everyone at Christmas, evedentally he contacted all our familys and had them send us gifts which we had no knowledge of then on Christmas during the company dinner he announced he had something for us and had TOP bring in all the gifts , we thought they bought em till we opend them and noticed our familys handwriting and gifts. He ws the greatest commander I ever had. I remeber a few nights we spent at Warrior Base and listening to the propaganda music and all the FTX's we did. If any one was with me email me.

Comments: I served in Korea from Oct 1993-Oct 1994, with the 188th MP CO in Taegu. I have since left the Army currently a police officer in Atlanta. It just so happens that a majority of my police force had served in Korea at one time or another. The year I spent in Korea was probably the best year of my life. I really enjoyed the friendships that were made, the Korean culture, and the landscape. I wouldn't trade those memories for a million dollars. Thank you for providing this web site.

Comments: Just checking on some great American warriors. I spent a lot of time in 1-5. It was the hardest I ever worked and the most fun I ever had. I made friends for life at Camp Hovey. Your hard work has helped keep a great nation free. Looking forward to hearing from some of you great men!!

Comments: There has been a lot of talking about creating a medal for those who served in Hondurus and El Salvador. What about a medal for those who served in Korea's DMZ after the Korean war (especially from the 1960s-1980s)? I had a PLT SGT who told me about how they got shot at while he was on patrol in 1978 as a private. I talked to other older NCOs and did research and found out that patroling along the DMZ was pretty darn risky. None of these guys got medals. Today a soldier going to Bosnia or Kosovo gets TWO to THREE medals and those in Korea get nothing (they get the same overseas ribbon as a guy in Hawaii or Italy). I am writing my congressional rep and tell them they need to remember the soldiers in Korea. I urge you to write your congressmen also.

Comments: I served in 3rd PLT JSF from 89-91 It was a great experience, but towards the end of the tour, the regular Army started to appear in JSA. Towards the beginnning we wore soft caps at ranges and at the end, we had to wear kevelars. Looking for anybody who served in JSF during this period

Comments: I served in Korea from 1997-2000 and really liked the mission focus and the professionalism of the soldiers. It is really a shame that soldiers defend "on freedom's frontier" but most Americans have no idea how dangerous Korea can be. Friends of mine who served in both 2ID and Bosnia wonder why 2ID does not get any harzardous duty pay.

DMZ DURING DESERT SHIELD AND DESERT STORM |

JOHN FOLEY wrote on 2000-04-24 15:40:14.0
Comments: During December 1990 I was accompanying one of my squads patrolling the DMZ. While in the vicinity of Freedom Village we observed a column of NK armor consisting of T-62 tanks and BTR APCs moving towards the DMZ itself. This move was reported to the S-2 of the 1/506th Inf.
N.K. was attempting to aid its ally Iraq by rattling her saber on the DMZ to put pressure on America. Other than burning fuel and causing mild concern this move acomplished nothing.
In March of 1991 while the "Bridge Boss" of Freedom Bridge we heard some explosions to our East, followed shortly thereafter by an artillery barrage. I put my bridge crew on full alert, but shortly we recieved word to stand down.
What had happened was this: A couple of 120mm mortar shells left over from the fighting in the area between 1950-53 had been dislodged by the spring rains and slid down the slope, where they blew up when they hit the rocks in the creek bed below. The NKs paniced and fired a barrage into an empty rice paddy in the SK DMZ sector. The NKs then screamed for the neutral nations to save them from SK and American "aggression". The investigation by the Czechs, Poles, Swedes, and Swiss showed that it was indeed some old mortar shells of Chinese or Russian manufacture had slid down and blew up. The NKs insisted that the SKs had fired anti-tank missiles at guard post 220...
We knew then that we had nothing further to fear from the North.

Looking For DMZ Stories |

THOMAS (TOM) Bisping wrote on 2000-04-18 22:29:31.0
Comments: I am presently organizing research for a book on korea from '54 to present. The thrust of the book, will be on armed incidents, guard post duties, firefights, and any contact with North Korean forces. Looking for stories from Infantrymen, FA Forward Observers and 4P1/4P3, Ground Surveillance Radar, JSA, Tunnel Neuatralization Team, even Aviators DMZ flights, and tankers on Western Corridor Duty. I'm hoping this book will be an educational tool for the rest of America that thinks the war ended in '53, because the last episode of MASH said it did. Also, as of 1995, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, successfully lobbied congress to ammend their eligibility rules. Any service member who served 30 days consecutively or 60 days non-consecutively on the ground, air, or territorial waters of the Korean peninsula, from 1949 to a date to be determined, is now eligible for membership. if you haven't done so already, join this organization.
