I used to be a KATUSA (Korean Augmentation to The United Army) and served in 229th signal company in camp Humphrey, south Korea from 1989 to 1991. 10 years after my Army Service, I got to miss one of my american friends so much. His name is Troy Lee Maus(born in 1961, I guess) Of course, I remember other Names, Ronald Thompsom, Kenneth Williams. Is there any way I can get in touch with him ? Comments: I was looking up the 9th Infintry Div., 3rd of 39th Infintry, my brother, David J. Rust, served in this infintry in Korea in 1979 I believe. I have discovered the military websites due to the fact I have been searching for a friend to find her father, who served in the us army, vietnam war, his name was Thomas A Richter, he served in the MP Division and I have come across these sites. I told my brother I would look his up and he was quite excited about it. Can you tell me if there is any reunions coming up. His main base was Ft. Lewis, WA. and he resides in WASHINGTON STATE still. If anyone out there recognizes his name, please email me, and I will give David the message, unfortunately he doesn't have a computer. THANKS

Comments: From 85-89 I was a FoodService Sgt with the 44th Engr Bn (CBT/HVY). Other than my time spent in 10th Special Forces Group (ABN), the 44th is a great memory for me. Feeding hungry engineers was a challange to say the least, but they were always respectful of the chow and, didn;t complain like support units do.
It was a pleasure to serve in the 44th. I would like to hear from anyone out there that was with the 44th.

I'm looking for anyone who served with BCo 1/9th Inf Bn 1985-1987 and anyone who served with 44th Engr Bn B Co, C Co, or HHC 85-89. I'd like to hear from you, I'm doing some research for a book and would appreciate any info, stories, etc you may be able to tell.

Comments: Any former "Tomahawks" out there. Wow, it has been a long time since I have been in country. I was there from 5/84-5/85. Alot of good memories and wild times. I served as an Infantryman in Aco. That summer I passed the EIB testing, then transfered to HHC support platoon driving a "duece" going back and forth to the guard posts, QRF and ration runs. The killer was I was given "3" rounds of 5.56 to carry with me on the DMZ. One for a warning shot, one for my passenger, and one for me I guess. Do they still award the "Imjin Warrior" patches? ;->

Comments: FIST member assign to 2/17 FA but attached to 1st Plt B Co 1/9th Inf from Nov 85 to Nov 86. Looking for other Fist'ers (Buckey, Rosso, McCrory, Lt J.M. Collins, Hutchinson, Rodriguez, Commisso) as well other manchus (D. Silva, L. Bird, M. Best, LLavin, etc.) to catch up with. Great reading through some of these stories about the ROK and some of the "incidents" during the mission.
We did the tour from Dec 85 to Feb 86. Biggest memories for me were the first SR-71 sonic boom I heard while in the barracks at Oulette (took off out the door from a dead sleep), our Katusa Hong puking in my boots after a night of drinking soju (we tried to get him to morning formation but ended up sticking him in a turtle ditch which worked fine until he started moaning during formation), and taking our laser range finders and aiming for the faces of the N. Koreans across the MDL. Does that sign still say "WECOME To The NORTH"? By far the best time I spent in the service was that tour.

Comments: I served with Dco. 1/31 (M) Inf., which later changed to the 1/5th at Camp Howze, Korea, from 85-86. I remember getting off the plane in country and getting on a bus to the turtle farm (cp. casey). The driver of the bus was Korean and he was playing Bruce Springstein's Born in the USA. After I inprocessed at Casey, I was sent to Camp Howze. I remember partying in Bongilchon at all the little clubs. There was a lady down range they called chicken mom, she made the best chicken and yakimondu. Oh all the soju and jungle juice I drank. I can recall many a night that I walked up the hill, fighting not to fall into the turtle ditch. I served under the Hatchetman, CSM Hatcher. He was the toughest sob I ever met, and when I PCSed back to the states, he became my CSM at Ft. Campbell (My Luck). I later found out that he was a really great guy. He is now retired and living in Clarksville, Tennesse. I served with many great guys in the ROK. We became brothers because we were all we had. I would love to be able to speak with some of them again. I remember Ivan Perez from Rhode Island. He was a great kid, young and full of cum, and a good friend. Robert Nutt, Perez, and myself had some great times together. Nutt was stationed with me later at Ft. Campbell, but Perez was killed in the Panama invasion in 89. The DMZ mission for me was the best. My assistant patrol leader was kicked off of the patrol by Lt. Col. White because he did not learn his call signs, brevity codes, and legs for the next mission. Do you remember when you would get quized on your next patrol in the tent? I was named the assistant patrol leader as a PFC and was absolutely scared to death, but I remained for the remainder of the mission. I received an impact arcom and two legionairre coins. It was the time of my life. Playing football on GP Oulette during the day, and humping to our ambush site at night. Listening to Madonna and Michael Jackson playing on the North Korean loud speaker. Pulling guard at GP. Collier and people telling me to watch out for crazy charlie because he will come up to the gate and scare the hell out of you if you fall asleep. I never did see crazy Charlie, so I don't know if that was true or just a way to keep you awake. I remember looking through the powerful binos on Oulette and exchanging the bird with the North. Getting my tattoos at the tattoo parlor in TDC, and going to the heavy metal club in Itaewon. Ramien partys with the Katusas, The Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and Tanya Tucker coming to the base. Short time calenders, it was a great time. I'm glad to see that there is a place that people like us can go to and reflect. Keep up the good work.

Comments: Korea was easily one of the most memorable years of my life. No DMZ incidents, except for a jumpy KATUSA trying to shoot our flank security on an ambush. Thank God the idiot left tape over the top of the magazine. My main regret is that I didn't see enough of the country while I was there. Being on 24 hour alert with a 45 minute recall really curtailed sightseeing. Attended and completed the ROK Ranger school, 9th ROK Division (White Horse Division). Glad to see that htere is an effort being made to recognize DMZ vets.

Brian Harris wrote on 2000-04-16 11:54:57.0
Comments: I arrived in Seoul in March 83 and was assigned to the 55th MP Co. When I arrived in the company we did not have much of a mission. However, that soon changed and we took over two Checkpoints. Nazing Checkpoint just north of the airport on a road leading to Kangwa. The other was a check point (I dont recall the name) on the main route (Route 2?) to the DMZ. While assigned as the NCOIC of this checkpoint I stayed at Camp Pelham from Sep 83 through Mar 84. Those that were there or assigned to the 2nd MP company may remember the case of the missing MRE's? I do believe it was over 100 cases missing. May remember a friend of mine Brian Peters who was killed when his jeep crashed into a tank trap heading to Camp Howze. May recall the 15 soldiers killed when their Duce 1/2 was hit by a train turning into the camp near camp Howze. May remember escorting Ronald Reagan to the DMZ. In april 84 I was re-assigned to the Military Police Investigation section 55th MP Company in Uijongbu where i stayed until leaving the ROK in april of 87.
In a earlier post someone recalled the defector that later showed up on the propaganda leafletts having a picnic with some N.K ladies. The defector was PFC White. I wonder if he is still alive. It was only 8 months later that the word got back that he died in a swimming accident. HMMMM.?
I have returned to Korea numerous times and cant believe the changes the country has made. I am currently planning the ultimate return to the DMZ but this time as a tourist in the North looking into the south from the DMZ. I will post on my adventure in September.
Would love to hear from anyone that may recall these events and many more during the time frame of 83 - 87.

This remains to this day as one of the most significant experiences of my life. I especially remember the months spent in Warrior Base on the DMZ. I remember feeling as though I had landed on another planet when I arrived in Korea. I can still smell the Kimche and other odors unique to that place. After humping up and down all those hills I developed a deep respect for the veterans who fought there and to this day I cannot imagine what it must have been like.

Comments: I am presently organizing research for a book on Korea from '54 to present. The thrust of the book, will be on armed incidents, guard post duties, firefights, and any contact with North Korean Forces. Looking for stories from Infantrymen, FA Forward Observers and 4P1/4P3, Ground Surveillance Radar, JSA, Tunnel Neuatralization Team, even Aviators DMZ flights, and tankers on Western Corridor Duty. I'm hoping this book will be an educational tool for the rest of America that thinks the war ended in '53, because the last episode of MASH said it did. Also, as of 1995, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, successfully lobbied congress to amend their eligibility rules. Any service member who served 30 days consecutively or 60 days non-consecutively on the ground, air, or territorial waters of the korean peninsula, from 1949 to a date to be determined, is now eligible for membership. If you haven't done so already, join this organization.

Comments: Still looking for any one that was there in same time frame. I was with Delta Maddogs 2/72 Armor from 1988-1989. Like several others posting I remember some stuff going on over in the ROK that never seemed to make the stateside papers. I still keep in touch w/ our old FIST and he confirms. Would like to get in touch w/ anyone who served at Camp Casey around that time to shoot the breeze. Wonder what TDC is like now?

Comments: I'm looking for anyone that served with B Co. 102d MI BN from either 84-85 or 87-88. I was with 3rd Plt. on both tours. On my first tour my platoon was stationed at Camp Howze, but I spent most of my time on Radar site 11.
we turned it over to the ROK Marines and they sent us to Radar site 1. On my second tour (87-88) my plt. was stationed at Cp. Hovey. I did my whole tour on Gp.Ouellette.
I do have one question. Since there was no "formal" peace treaty signed, just a cease fire agreement. (note; no Head of State i.e President Truman, President Rhee, Kim-il Sung signed ANY document ending the "war in korea") so in all actuality the "war" never has ended. Why haven't those of us that served in Korea recieved the United Nations Medal, the Korean Service Medal, or a combat patch? If no one can answer my question please point me to someone who can.

Comments: Was on Camp Pelham Dec 88-Dec 89. Got to go up into the JSA/Macha on several occasions to do Artillery surveying. Did survey work on Greaves, 4P1, 4P3, Liberty Bell, Bonifas, Warrior Base, and other unspecified locations within and out of the US controlled sections in the southern boundary of the DMZ. Got up to and along the MDL alot. Interesting tidbit... Got to do a survey job right at the base (underneath the tower) of the big south korean flag. Probably shouldn't get specific, however. Always wanted to join the Tunnel Neutralization Team, but they didn't need anyone my first or second (96-97, Suwon) tour. If anyone has any survey experiences in the DMZ or has questions or comments about FA survey from Pelham on up to the MDL, let me know.

Comments: Interesting site! Happy to see one so well organized about the Korean War, and including DMZ to.
Between July 1986 and July 1987 I was Commander of Camp Edwards and FASCO for FAST3 supporting the Frontline BDE. Although I was an Infantry Officer at the time, I had operational control of about 320 DISCOM troops providing logistics support to the BDE and units on the DMZ. I owned the equipment at Warrior Base and the two OPS. Spent time every rotation up there during inventories. Even got a chance to go on a DMZ Patrol with the BDE S2.
I was generally impressed with the caliber of the young troops, NCOs, and young officers in the infantry battalions that I saw while I was there that year.

Comments: I was a member of the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division, in the late 80`s. And there was still a lot of action happening then. While I was over there I had the opportunity to see a report of all hostile activity that had occurred since 1953. I`am interested in trying to find this report again. If you have any info please pass on via e-mail. Thanks for your time and for having a good sight.

Comments: I spent two tours in Korea, 89-90 and 92-90. In fifthteen years of service two tours in Germany and being a Desert Storm vet my fondest memories are of Korea. I also lost a cousin there during the war, he was a Marine by the name of Martin Walenda. He was killed shortly before the cease fire final cease fire was signed. To all Korean vets your services and sacrifices have not been in vain or have been forgotten.

Comments: I am interested in the DMZ and Korea in general. Also, I am interested in the warriors that came before me, the ones the served when I did, and those who followed. Korea changed me forever. I did the 1/38 Infantry Tour of the DMZ from September to December 1984. If any of my old friends or old unit friends from Korea remember me please write or call. I will never the people I met, the training, or the great Mess Sargent we had at Camp Hovey. Or my hard ass First Sargent - 1st Sargent Morris. Good Bye for now! 1st to fight, second to none! 2nd ID Camp Casey. I was stationed in Camp Hovey. Hammons
