Comments: I too traded my MRE'S with mama san for yaki man do and one pepsi. Moon pies were the bomb also. We had a little incident on the Z, can't comment on that one. I was able to recover a weapon that a medic lost and never told on him. I made him sweat for a while and then I let him know that I had found his weapon while on guard duty. Back then we stuck together. None of this crap that exist today. We were there together and we were one. God bless the Army, God bles the 9th ID, and God bless all of the soldeirs and there families that are in harms way. GO DEVIL, and GET UGLY , Spec 4 F Chavez Commo Cheif , OUT

Keywords: We were known as GO DEVILS. We went to Korea on a team spirit but I went advanced party and volunteered to stay for extra duty. We landed in Pusan. It was great. I felt like I was home when I got to Korea. I got out alot. I went to Osan, Youngsan, Etaywon, Camp Haleah, Camp Red Cloud, Camp Casey, and the DMZ. I served with some of the best infantry soldeirs in the army. I went on my first thunder run in Korea. I forgot to by my OB patch. If anyone knows where I can get one, please let me know.

Comments: Definitely one of the strangest years of my life, what I remember of it. I know almost our entire Survey section got frostbite in Jan 84 as we were advance party, the ftx was cancelled because of extreme cold temps. We were out of radio range and forgotten about for 3 days. We thought we were going to die. Summertime was fun, shit burning detail sucked (while the latrine was being renovated. Cleaning the banjo ditches was kind of nasty as well. Silvac, Soju, the first time I had green tea (note: it wasn't healthy). Lot's of odd little pills that did odd things. I know why we have to have prescriptions in America, thank God. In '84 on a 1 batalion post, we had 4? suicides. We even had a Korean gate guard commit suicide. The service bat. armorer locked himself in the arms room and blew the top of his head off with a M1911. That was a mess, I was ACQ in HHB that night and we shared a quasit hut with svc. PT sucked, 3 miles on Mon, 5 miles T,W,TH, and 7 miles on Fridays. I spent 12 years in the Army and that was the best shape I was ever in in my life. Or at least the leanest. The whole place was on drugs.

Keywords: Camp Essayons, 6/37 FA, 82C, Surveyors, SFC Leon Jackson, SSG James Ching, Jeff Reese, Shapely, Ted Wingert, SP5 Smith, Sherman, Hefner, David Story (NBC), Bill Dove (Commo), Many suicides.

Comments: I was the Platoon leader of 3rd Platoon C Company, 1st BN 9th Infantry - green as grass and dumber'n dirt. Thank god I had good NCOs looking out for me. 1SG Riley Miller, SFC's Barrientos and Burton, SSG Jones, SGTs Waugh, Stobbe, Fisher and Doyle - take a bow.

I had good people too, real hell raisers in the ville but they could soldier when it counted.

Commanded GP Oullette for most of DEC 1980. The NKs played christmas carols at us all day long.

It was a great experience for a young officer. The Manchus were a great battalion and the 2ID showed me the standard.

Manchu - Keep up the fire!

Comments: I had the opportunity to spend 6 lovely years in South Korea. The time was broken up by years, but I seemed to return every two years. I have since retired from the Army and live in Florda. I started out my Korea experience with' A Troop, 4/7 Cav, at Camp Garry Owen, yong-gi-go '7'7-78. Some of the names I remember are, Bob Bailly, John Carson, David Snavely, Sgt Johnson.. Cpt Wheelock was the Company Commander. My next experience was with the 2nd Combat Intelligence Company, CBTI, at Camp Hovey Korea. We were still in the quonset huts, with the hold diesel heaters in the winter time. Oh and the latrine seemed to be a long way aways. Open bays, cement floors. I was on Radar Site 11 over looking the Han River Estuary. I was there from 1980 - 1981. No running water, he had a water buffalo and those immersion heaters in garbage cans for showers. I went back to Korea from 1983-1985 extended a year, was having such a great time. Was on Radar Site 2. Had a real world mission than, a real enemy and real world drama. Again, it was Camp Hovey, still in quonset huts, obtained a goat and created a farm with farm animals. Was a great time, great people, and great experiences. My last tour was with HHC, 102d MI Bn and I was in the S3 as the Battaltion Training NCO. Since I had track experience, I drove the Command Track and ran the late shift at the TOC. I wired the PC with music, installed a microwave for Pizza's and heating of food and also had a 2 inch tv for viewing of the superball one night. That was a hoot. I have since retired from the Army, in 1994 to be exact, 14 years alread. I miss my experiences in South Korea. I am hoping to visit some day soon.
